  1. Bob, I have taken and taught YP and nowhere does it tell you to jump to conclusion & make accusations. The statement I made is based on common sense which is the core of YP. I'm not going to accuse anyone of abusing a child if I don't have some sort of proof. That would be irresponsible. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  2. Is anyone keeping score? packsaddle, we gonna put on our play?
  3. You ain't even close FScouter. Nowhere did I say don't get involved or it was the kids fault. How do you know those bruises on little Johnnies arms aren't from getting beat up at school & not at home? Or maybe he did fall down the steps? You don't know. And if you report mom & dad for abuse, you could be doing a great disservice to a fine pair of parents who love little Johnny more than anything. And that disservice would be wrong. Don't look the other way & get involved. Just make sure you are making a judgment based on something other than your feelings. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  4. I'm game packsaddle! Let me know when you're ready to start! Think it should be a new thread? And mods, if we do start this, please give us some leeway! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  5. So a scout leader thinks abuse is present in a youths home, checks the website and sees he is not a mandatory reporter. He can sleep easier at night knowing that if anything bad happens to the child, he is not legally responsible. The child is still dead or injured, but at least the leader is not on the hook. We have to be careful when we are making assumptions about what goes on in a Scout's home. Unless we see physical evidence or actually witness abuse, we could be putting an entire family in jeopardy for no reason. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  6. Did so! Did not! Don't worry, FScouter, I'm just waiting to see where this goes! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  7. Yup a Scout is Courteous. A Scout is polite to everyone regardless of age or position. He knows that using good manners makes it easier for people to get along. Does that mean a Scout doesn't disagree with someone? No. Does that mean a Scout will roll over & play dead? No. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  8. Now this banter is funny! I'm just gonna sit back & watch!
  9. Looks like in PA, Scouters aren't mandatory reporters!
  10. Actually, Bob, in your post the SM initiated the conversation. What I am saying is the SPL is the one who should be initiating the conversation if, in fact, this conversation needs to be done. Do you see the difference? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  11. Nope. You are correct Bob. There is nothing that prevents a parent from counseling their son(s) in a MB provided they are a registered MB counselor for the badge & the SM assigns the parent as the Scout's MB counselor. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  12. Y'all are buying cars & stuff! A real Scouter would hit the Scout Shop & stock up! I'll take a 1969 Trans-Am, please! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  13. Hmmm. If I'm not mistaken, in the Scoutmaster Handbook & the Boy Scout Handbook & a couple other places I think it states that the Scout will obtain a MB card with the name & contact info for a registered counselor. Don't remember the exact wording & I don't have any BSA resources where I am currently. Sorry. What that means to me is the SM will give the Scout, upon request of the Scout, a MB card with the name & contact of a MB counselor. Nothing states the Scout will tell the SM what MB counselor he wants to use. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  14. The SM sorta does have some control of who a Scout uses as a MB counselor. After all, doesn't the Scout get the name & contact info for a registered MB counselor from the SM? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  15. Do we really need to ask th SPL "What's the plan for tomorrow?" if our unit is boy run? Shouldn't the SPL be asking us "We are breaking camp at 8 AM. Will the adults be ready to go then?" Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  16. I have answered that before FScouter. Training should be mandatory for CO's & adult leaders. If ya wanna join or charter a unit, ya gotta take the training! No training, no joining or chartering. You turn FScouter. What's your idea? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  17. Well then, there shouldn't be an issue with untrained leaders, should there? Apparently not! But what about the untrained & uninterested CO's?
  18. Maybe we need to identify the right and wrong ways to deliver Scouting? What do y'all think? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  19. No prep needed. Best one are unprepared. This is really an informal chat between the SM and the Scout and can occur anywhere & anytime. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  20. So, the question is how does the BSA get those other 7 of 10 leaders to training? Well >If training was mandatory, 10 of 10 would go. >If the council required all CO's to attend training, the numbers would go up. >If the CO required all registered leaders in the units they charter attend training, the numbers would go up. Anyone else? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  21. Good point John. Hands on training is more effective than sitting in a lecture taking notes. If you don't apply those notes you took, they are just words on a page. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  22. So? The question was about having "qualified" people to dispense the drugs. The health tech at school is no more or less qualified than the Scoutmaster or the staff member in the health lodge. In most cases you are correct GW, which is why it is not the way to do it. When I was the SM, one of my ASM's was a RN & he took the responsibility of storing & dispensing all the meds for our Troop at summer camp. He kept all the meds locked up in his tent. Worked out great. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  23. Glad I gave you a chuckle hops! But, man, it is a fact! People are looking everywhere except at themselves when something goes wrong. A lady goes to McDonald's drive thru & buys a coffee then places it between her legs then hits a bump the the coffee goes hither & yon & the lady gets burned! She sues McDonald's! And the saddest part is a jury awards he a huge sum of money because there is no warning on the cup the contents is hot! You gotta be kidding me! Couldn't she feel the heat as soon as she touched the cup! Doesn't she know McDonald's has the hottest coffee in the lower 48 & some parts of Burma! Sickening I tell ya!
  24. And if my kids were still in the system, they would not be turning their meds over either. Makes no sense. Too many kids today are on too many meds! There is no way a camp or school can keep track of all of these & it is a total inconvenience to ask a kids to go to the camp infirmary or school nurses office every time they need to take their meds. Whatever happened to being responsible for yourself? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
