  1. I would agree with the response from le Voyageur.
  2. Gotta agree with Beav! Bulling is an act of commission not omission. Leaving someone out of your group isn't bullying. Neither is ignoring someone. And bullying can be brought on by the one who is being bullied. That doesn't make it right, though. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  3. Ed When you are the responsible adult and you you not only know that the bullying is taking place but you condone it and pretend not to know about it, then you are indeed one of the bullies. BW In your opinion, Bob. Sure if I see a kid getting beat up or a group of kids standing around hurling insults at another kid I will try to put a stop to it. That's not what I was talking about. Just ignoring someone & not including them in your group isn't bullying. It might be ignorant & mean, but not bullying. But some want to include this type of behavior under bullying. This has no place as a rank requirement. Yeah Beav, I would bet 10 years down the road, when studies are done, they will find nothing has changed! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  4. Ignoring someone or not doing something because someone is being bullied by another is not bullying! This is the kind of stuff that happens when we go through these fads! Terminology gets skewed & the meaning is whatever someone wants to have it fit for them! Little Billy is being bullied by his friends! How? They are ignoring him! Give me a break!
  5. Hey! There will be no raging in this thread! This thread is about manliness, not, well you know!
  6. I would not consider the 1st Scout in scoutmomma's example a boy who was bullied. The 2nd Scout in her example, probably. Bullying is hard to define. There is the obvious (hitting, name calling) and there is the not so obvious. The not so obvious is the type that is hard to define & I would bet a lot of the time is mis-defined. I like John's idea. Put this in the Family Life MB. It is an Eagle required badge so a lot of Scouts will complete it. This doesn't belong as a rank requirement. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  7. Yeah OGE, but that was in a galaxy long ago & far away. Bullies come in all different flavors now. Heck a cyber bully back then woulda been the robot on Lost in Space! Yeah & wadda ya gonna make of it? Huh?
  8. OK FScouter. The T-2-1 ranks requirements are, as another poster put it, basic skills. These requirements aid in teaching Scout basic outdoor, cooling, camping, etc. skills. Understanding how to identify a bully & other "Youth Protection" issues is not a basic skill & boys working on these ranks will probably not understand what is being taught. It's over most of their heads. These requirements should be added to the S-L ranks (if at all) where the boys are older & have a better chance of understanding them. Personally, I think it's a CYA for the BSA similar to the DARE requirements & the recruiting requirement. Little substance. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  9. Bullying has been around as long as kids! It comes in all shapes & sizes and there are times it's as hard to identify as hazing. Should it be addressed? Sure but not as an advancement requirement. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  10. John, Yeah I know we have to do it. Never said we didn't. We also have the recruiting requirement. All a similar and should not be tied to advancement. You have your opinion, I have mine. We might have to agree to disagree. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  11. Deal with this situation - - overheard at summer camp, father to 12yo son (verified). "_____ ,come on and take a shower with me." And this needs to be dealt with why? Do you know there is something "wrong" going on? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  12. I'm still trying to figure out how schools were violating the rights of their students by chartering BSA units? Are the students of a school forced to join a BSA unit chartered by their school? And why all of a sudden is chartering a BSA unit a violation of anyone's rights? Could it be because of the Dale case? And had the ACLU won the Dale case would this be an issue? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  13. My bad mk9750. You are correct! I was busy with other things when I posted that! Sorry!
  14. I don't think these should be requirements for rank. Yes it should be dealt with, but having these as rank requirements is more of a CYA move than an actual way to deal with the problem (if in fact there is a problem). Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10(This message has been edited by evmori)
  15. For a Scout to advance past 1st Class, merit badges are required. A uniform isn't. And doesn't uniform mean the same? So if an entire Troop decided to go to Wal*Mart & buy a bunch of tan shirts & olive pants that match, wouldn't that be their uniform?
  16. Yes they will as long as they are not Eagle required.
  17. I don't know for sure but I would bet you will have to pay taxes on in it! I think the key here is to get the rebate, you must file a return! No return, no rebate! Now I know filing a return doesn't mean more tax money for the coffers but there should be an increase in revenue for the government because people want their rebate! Sorta like getting those coupons in the mail where you can save an extra $20 if you shop at certain stores on certain days! Heck, if ya didn't shop at all, you would save a lot more! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  18. The BSA bashing will by the ACLU will continue as long as someone will listen to the slanted arguments presented.
  19. The ACLU might not have any power but it does have lots of muscle! Just like the mob!
  20. If I was a professional escort, I would be broke. I'm a banker. Been at it for 20 years with my current company. Been in the business for almost 30 years. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  21. And let's not forget, no uniform is required to be a BSA member.
  22. I'm with ya Join4TA! When I was the Advancement Chair, I felt the same way. I didn't have nearly as many problems as you are having. There were a few parents who tried to talk the kids into advancement but I held my ground as should you. You are talking about a culture change in your unit. You really have little or no control over who earns what MB. That's between the Scout & the counselor. You do have some control over rank advancement, though, and maybe that's where you should place your energy. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  23. I would stick to the decision already made. How do you know if this Scout is just not wanting the job because he doesn't like the Scout who will inherit it? Let the PLC decide if they want to keep the tenure change after the current decision expires. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
