Nampa LDS Ward and BSA hit with sex abuse lawsuit
evmori replied to Beavah's topic in Issues & Politics
Why did he wait 40 years to file a suit? While this could be true, it sounds more like someone wants a ride on the gravy train. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
Yeah sometimes it's tough to swallow when you feel you should get something and you don't. What to do? Prove to everyone you would have been the better choice. Do your best & be the best Scout & patrol member you can be. Where does he say he's a PL, Bob? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
Bob, You asked & answered your own question. A Lone Scout isn't a Scouting unit. And as posted, requires an adult. Adults associated with the unit huh. Which is required, isn't it. The Scouts associate with the adults & the adults associate with the Scouts. It's a two way street. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
That was hard to read! I think I understand what you are asking, Bob. If there are no adults, there can be not unit, correct? So to be member of a BSA unit, on has to associate with adults. One does not need a uniform or be in a patrol or venture into the outdoors or advance. But without adults, there is no unit. Adult Association - Boys learn from the examples set by their adult leaders. Troop leadership may be male or female, and association with adults of high character is encouraged at this stage of a young man's development. And my name is Ed and the other poster you referred to, Bob, was GW. You can use my name. I don't care. I don't think GW does either. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

No Bob you are not understanding me correctly nor is your statement accurate. Adult Association happens. When a boy joins a unit, he interacts with adults hence Adult Association in it's rawest form. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

How to deal with nut allergies & parent
evmori replied to CaveEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Inhalers should be readily available to the people who use them. There is no valid reason to lock them up. Actually, the camp did take away his extra inhalers & lock them up. Why? -
Without adults, you have no unit. Without uniforms, a unit can still exist.

How to deal with nut allergies & parent

I have never been a fan of locking up a kids meds in the medical hut & forcing the kid to go there to have them dispensed especially inhalers. If a kid as a condition that requires them to take medication or carry epi pens or use an inhaler, they should be responsible for themselves. The same goes for allergy management. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
If I may GW. To charter a BSA unit, there needs to be a minimum number of adults signed up as leaders. There also needs to be minimum number of boys. Adult Association has to happen! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

What's wrong with the Scout sewing the rank patch on himself? After all, it is his uniform & his rank patch. And if he or mom opts for the easy way out & the patch is lost, well, that would mean the Scout would have to get a new one at his own expense! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

I'm with GW! If the rest of the unit wants to eat peanut butter, they should be allowed. It is really up to the Scout & his parents to inform the unit of these allergies so the leadership is aware of them. It is really unfair to the rest of the unit to ban a food item because one kid is allergic. We had a kid in my unit who was allergic to a bunch of stuff. He knew what it was & how to manage it. We did ask him if he was allowed to est certain things we weren't sure of and he knew what he could & couldn't have. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
Be alert! The country needs more lerts!

Licensed official NFL jerseys start at $229. You mean to say they can't make thet jersey for at least 10 times less than that. I have a licensed official NFL jersey & the cost was no where near $229! The prices vary for these based on the player! You might pay $229 for a Bart Starr or Terry Bradshaw jersey, but I seriously doubt if that price is the norm. And yet I would bet that more NFL jersey's are sold to fans than there are BSA uniform shirts sold to Scouting members every year. Could be! What's the point? Who complains about the cost of the jersey? Nobody, because they want to wear them due to the pride they have for the team it represents. I'm sure people complain about the cost. And yep they are worn with pride! I know I where mine with pride, just like my BSA uniform. If the scouts in the unit you serve do not want to wear the uniform, I doubt that cost is the real problem. The same holds true for the leaders. Well, we can't force them to wear the uniform, now can we. All we can do is encourage them to. And considering the cost, I would say it is a contributing factor. I'm glad I wasn't drinking coffee when I read that, Beav, cause I woulda spewed it out my nasal passages! That was funny! BTW, which one was the bully? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Thanks for correcting my error GNX Guy. It still begs the question, why does a BSA shirt cost $40? Pants $40? Socks $5? Belt & Buckle $10? That's $100! Not everyone can afford that. And yeah I know we don't need to buy everything or anything new. But getting used uniforms isn't always an option. If the total price was $50, more people would be able to afford the uniform. Gotta wonder why the uniform costs so much? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Is Training Enough (the BobWhite thread)
evmori replied to Beavah's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Great line Stosh! And right on the money. As poor leader will probably still be a poor leader after they attend training. I feel mandatory training would help weed out the people who sign up just to sign up. I feel the leadership quality would increase. There is nothing like hands on experience to enhance the training. Not everything functions like the books day they will! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
So the argument that uniform is expensive or unaffordable is really very weak at best. Not a weak argument at all. To a single mom with three kids, the cost of any uniform could be expensive. And let's not forget, not everyone has a uniform bank available to get 2nd hand uniforms from. It's a little ironic that a Sea Scout uniform cost less than s Boy Scout shirt. Kinda makes you wonder why? Considering the BSA probably sells a lot more BSA shirts than Sea Scout uniforms, it really should be cheaper to buy a shirt than an entire uniform. Seems like supply & demand doesn't rule the BSA pricing structure. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
We could go on & on & round & round but the best thing to do is agree to disagree. The uniform is expensive. And until it is required, we can only hope to achieve a fully uniformed unit. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
None of the methods are required, Bob. We all know that. But it seems we put a lot of effort into disputing what is & isn't proper uniforming that if the uniform is all that important then it should be required to be a member. Then it doesn't need to be a method! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
Now let's not forget that one can look like a Scout and still not be doing Scouting and visa versa. If the uniform is so darned important, why isn't it required? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

How to deal with nut allergies & parent
evmori replied to CaveEagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Gunny makes a great point. The responsibility should be with the person who has the allergy. Why should the rest of the unit be forced to go without something others may enjoy because on person is allergic to it? They shouldn't. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
Sounds like it's time for a little menu planning class. And after that, a shopping class.
