Just trying to understand, Bob, not arguing. Actually Bob we do agree but your statement and the fact is that religion is not an element of a board of review is what threw me for a loop. A BOR can ask a Scout what religion he is. There is nothing prohibiting that. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

I have already explained how it is not a requirement. Where? A Scout is Reverent. A Scout is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties. He respects the beliefs of others. I have never stated it isn't required. I agree that a Scout doesn't need to be a member of an organized religion to meet this point of the Law. But in what official BSA document does it state any BOR may not ask how the Scout meets this point of the law? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Technically, the animals are just to be identified. If the Scout goes to his Scoutmaster & tells him he completed this, the Scoutmaster should sign off. This isn't a discuss or list or tell about requirement, however, I don't see the problem giving the Scouts a sheet to use to list the animals identified. Requiring it, though, now that I think about it more, would be adding to the requirements. I gotta stop thinking! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Didn't you already answer your own question???? No I didn't and apparently neither do you since you responded..... Because trusting everyone who signs up as a scout leaders is as incorrect as trusting no one! When I was a SM, I kept all those ASM's who signed up on a short leash until they attended the necessary training. I trusted them menial tasks until then. After they attended training, my level of trust in them increased because I knew who trained them & that they were trained properly. But in both instances, trust was still there. Eamonn has some valid points. I ride the subway to work everyday. And everyday I put my trust in the operator to do their best to get me to my destination. And when I park my vehicle at the park n ride I trust it will be there when I return after work. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

the form looks more or less like Animal Name Resource (name and page number) Leader Initials This is just an example there are several places where this is an issue - at least to me. Seems like nothing more than a standardized sheet for the Scouts to use to list the animals they find. I would say it isn't adding to the requirements. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Scout units do not lose membership because of kids who do not know how to be scouts, but from adults who do not understand how to lead scouts. The BSA knows this and spend more resources on teaching adults how to lead Scouting than on teaching kids how to be kids. It's always the fault of the adult leadership. Nothing else could be the reason for the decline in membership. And I have some great swamp land to sell! Let's not forget, the decline in membership is not solely from boys quitting, but from boys just not joining and I think GW's original post had a lot of valid points as to why this is. I agree with scoutingagain! That kind of response is scary! The Scout answered honestly & based on what was posted, the answer he gave was very good. What if he would have said trustworthy because he didn't think it was necessary? Sounds like a knee-jerk reaction to me. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Ask your District Training Chair to show you that in any BSA publication.

However, three more hours behind the wheel means at least one more cup of coffee, another pee stop and maybe an extra meal. So that $2 in gas savings might wind up costing me $5 or $6. Take a thermos of coffee & a bag of chips with you!

Do I trust that other scouters are trying to do their best? No. I hope they will do their best, I would expect them to do their best. But I cannot trust them to do their best until I have some knowledge of their abilities to base that trust on. Sounds pretty all inclusive to me. I think when most adults sign up they have the best intentions to be good leaders at heart. And I think most do end up becoming good and trustworthy leaders. The one thing that I think we forget is being the best leader a person can be varies from person to person. Just like intelligence. Everyone has a different intelligence level. So, expecting a leader to give the same commitment as another is not fair to either and very narrow minded thinking. Sure trust is to be earned. But not everyone will earn the same level of trust.
