  1. By having a guest speaker talk about this incident at a CoH, even the Scout who weren't involved & guest who have no idea what's going on are forced to listen. There's you Platoon Punishment! No one has ever suggested a discussion on safe driving is off limits. It isn't but a CoH isn't the proper venue for such a discussion. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  2. Your understanding of the new testament is just as shakey it would seem. Was Jesus' purpose as a leader to enrich himself or to benfit those he lead? Servant Leadership. His purpose was neither. His purpose was to pay for our sins which He did with His life.
  3. Why have a guest speaker unless they have a meaningful message to share. I agree. But that message shouldn't be about a disciplinary issue. There are tons of topics a guest speaker could share!

    Position ?

Make him the Pack Popcorn Kernal!
  5. Survey????? We don't need no stinking survey! Build it & they will wear it!
  6. Ed did you NEVER have instruction in the work you do outside of the job site....ever? Yes I have Bob. Lots of times. But I am not a 12-17 year old. I have no problem making the connection. I feel boys have that problem if they learn things off-site. I remember one time a couple leaders were sitting under the dining fly discussing the construction of a larger peaked dining fly and we were trying to figure out how tall the peak would be. We asked one of our Scouts for the formula to determine the length of the third side of a triangle and after he told us he asked us "Why do you need that?" We explained what we were doing & he responded "What does geometry have to do with a tarp?" Couldn't make the connection! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  7. I would guess the interpreter strips are probably the least used items for a uniform yet they are still available. And I'm sure the cost to produce them is way under what we pay. The community strips would be the same thing. The set up cost is where the expense is. The reproduction cost is minimal & the profit would be good. I say bring 'em back! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  8. There is nothing wrong with guest speakers at a CoH. I have done this in the past. But to spring a speaker with the intention on having them address a disciplinary situation should not be done at a CoH. It is not the proper venue. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  9. Nothing helps a PL or SPL like actual experience! All the classroom learning is great but if they can't make the connection from the classroom training to the actual situation then all was for naught. I have always felt training youth leaders should be done in a "live" environment not a classroom setting. Boys this age don't make the connections well enough to carry the information to the situations. If the training is done in a "live" situation they get to see how to apply things as they happen. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4;10
  10. If you look in the Senior Patrol Leader Handbook or the Scoutmaster Handbook you will find that the SPL must be at least 16 years old and is appointed by the Senior Patrol Leader (with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster). You did mean the JASM must be 16 years old, didn't you Bob?
  11. Good question beav! I don't feel a CoH is for handling disciplinary matters. A CoH is a time to recognize the Scouts in front of mom & dad & grandma & grandpa & Aunt Suzie for what they have accomplished & earned. I would be highly offended if I was invited to a CoH & all of a sudden an EMT walked out & started a talk about the dangers of kids horsing around with motor vehicles! What would be next? An Amway presentation? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  12. My question is how did you hear about this? What I would do is at the next Troop meeting where all the Scouts that participated in the mentioned activity are present, I would have a serious discussion with them about how living the Scout Oath & Law in their everyday life means that part of their live outside of Troop meetings & other Scouting functions. I really believe boys this age don't make the connection between what they do outside of Scouting or school or jobs and how that might effect Scouting or school or jobs. And I also believe most boys this age don't get the subtle approach. Be direct. What these Scout did was could of had deadly consequences. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  13. What's making me scratch my head is the rule sticklers are not following the rules! Shouldn't this Scout be reported to Council? I'm not for doing that but if I'm not mistaken, ain't them the rules?
  14. Why is so much $$$$ needed? Does this cover every Scouts expenses in the unit for the entire year?
  15. GW, I've known an MBA or two who is as dumb as a mud fence! A bunch of sheepskin & letters don't make ya smart! I do believe Saddam had to go! And I am glad W took the initiative to get rid of him! I feel the world is a better place without him. What I don't like about W is his lack of doing anything on the domestic side! Gas prices are out of control! The economy is in the tank! And what is W doing about it? Staying the course? Yeah, that'll work! I don't know who will end up in the White House for the next four years but I do hope whoever it is will help kick start the economy & get us back on track. And it is great to have Rooster back! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  16. Thanks Bob. A couple comments. I would agree that not detouring or delaying the trip for the rest of the Scout was a good idea. But not knowing if a crime is a misdemeanor or felony or summary offense doesn't make it any less a crime. And just because you aren't the primary unit leader you still are part of the leadership in the unit that has the responsibility of all the youth in the unit on the trip with you. All leaders are equally responsible. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  17. Ed, you indicated that "there must be some consequences doled out by the unit." What would they be? That would depend on what the Scout did, OneHour. I have always been a fan of "the punishment fitting the crime." If he stole something from another Scout, suspension for three (3) months would be appropriate. If a Scout made a deliberate mess of the latrine on a camp out, he would be responsible for keeping the latrine clean for the remainder of the campout. Caught smoking pot, maybe, six (6) month suspension, removal from POR & any time in POR to that point removed (if applicable). Upon return, a sit down with the Scout & mom & dad to discuss this Scout's future in the unit with the understanding that if this or other serious infraction happens again, the Scout will be removed from the units charter. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  18. I know FScouter I should PM Bob White with this but as I have told you, there is a reason I didn't. Hopefully you will remember what that reason is & not delete this post. I'm confused, Bob. 1st you posted That is a decision for the Council and the Charter organization to deal with. After all it was their rules he violated not yours. The Scout violated the law, he violated a BSA policy, he violated his Oath, he endangered the assets of the charter organization. seems to indicate this Scout should have been turned over to the authorities and then you post I guarantee that the time we had parents drive over 1000 miles to remove their scouts from National Jamboree for bringing marijuana on the trip, neither the parents or the scouts felt that our actions or the punishment awaiting them was in their best interest. which seems to indicate you handled this very similar situation "in house". Can you clear up the confusion, please? Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  19. If I wasn't so tired from watching the Pens win in triple OT last night, I might have fallen out of my chair packsaddle! As my wife's uncle use to say, "Dumb as mud fence" is an accurate description of W.
  20. If this was the NCAA, penalties would have been doled out! Ya can't collect money from people under the guise of Scouting then pass out checks to Scouts aging out of the unit! That can be viewed as money laundering! And you have $30K in your bank account? Something is seriously wrong with this unit! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  21. I have never had a problem with the WMD thing. I do think Iraq had them. I think they got rid of 'em before we found 'em! My problem with W is his lack of doing anything about domestic issues! He is the biggest waffler I have ever seen & we have had some real weffler's in the White House!
  22. I'm not for zero tolerance either but if a Scout is bringing a controlled substance with him on unit camping trips, this must be dealt with. And just confiscating the substance isn't enough. Maybe the authorities don't need to be involved if this is a 1st time offense, but mom & dad do need to be involved & there must be some consequences doled out by the unit. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
  23. I was taught there are limited reasons to change churches: A person can leave a church for what ever reason they see fit. They might not like the new pastor or the style of worship or the direction the church is heading or etc.
  24. While I'm mot an Obama fan, this story is sucking up way too much news time when it isn't even that important!
