I'm still scratching my head. (This message has been edited by evmori)

The Scout & SM should have a sit down to discuss what the expectations of the leadership position are. Like my esteemed colleague posted, the term is "serve actively" and doing nothing is not "serving actively". And yes this can be very subjective. Not all Scout should be expected to lead the same way. What should be expected is all Scouts to do their best with the abilities & talents they have. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

new system lost my online training records

Are you calling me an idiot & a blundering fool, Bob? If the infrastructure or software isn't in place, then why place something in the live environment that doesn't work? That doesn't even make sense! And any IT guy worth his salt would know that! That's like giving someone keys to a car that doesn't have a drive shaft! You can turn it on but don't try to go anywhere! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
What your definition is is irrelevant since the training, resources and program elements of the BSA are not based on your opinions. If we are to have a reasonable discussion we need to be using the BSA's view and not each individual opinion of 1.2 million volunteers. (typos corrected) What is the servant leadership model the BSA uses based on? If I'm not mistaken, it is based on a book a person wrote on the subject. Thoughts???????

If there is no chain of command, why is everyone discussing who can toss who out? The Charter Organization is the only one who can remove a leader from a unit. The SM or CC can recommend someone be removed but they aren't authorized to remove them! God is in everyone's corner but not everyone is in God's corner. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Actually, Bob, John has a valid point. His rant might be a little misguided but it is accurate. This system should have been beta tested to death to get all the bugs out before the final product was released. After all, this is the BSA not Microsoft! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
Maybe I'm too naive but I don't see the problem with giving my SSN# to register for the BSA. I've got nothing to hide. Your SSN# is required on lots of applications. One reason is to help determine the correct person is being checked out. It always makes me scratch my head when people are leery of divulging this kind of information. Bob has a good point! Which means it won't be reported by the news media. Good news, unless it is a life saving incident or something of that magnitude isn't reported. Why? It usually isn't exciting enough. Not enough drama associated with it. Bad news, on the other hand, is exciting or can be made exciting easier & usually has tons of drama! This is one reason the only news I watch is sports. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Nothing was fabricated. No one ever attributed untrue statements to any poster. No one has been dishonest! FScouter, I don't think anyone is saying the entire Troop shouldn't be addressed about this. What I and Beav & others are stating is a CoH is not the proper venue to do it! A regular Troop meeting, the next campout would be more appropriate venues. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

I agree, OGE, that if a leader has to do some work while at camp & that's the only way the Scouts can get to go to camp, then WiFi is OK. The problem I have is the leaders who bring their laptops just to have them there! And let's not forget the camp staff who will probably be spending their time in their tents on myspace & other similar sites. I don't know if it's a good idea to have available WiFi at summer camps. I've gone weeks without checking my e-mail or getting on line. And honestly, I feel refreshed. And I can give the Scouts in my charge my 100% attention. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Let's see. We have the incident in Lisabob's post. At the very next CoH, we have an officer of the law and an emergency room doctor giving graphic examples of the results of hood surfing. The suggestion is then made to go home & have a serious discussion about this. Then I suppose you would have cherry punch & chocolate chunk cookies! If I was a parent that came to a CoH like this & my son wasn't involved, I would never com back to another CoH. Even if my son was involved, I would never come to another CoH! I might even start looking for a new Troop. Imagine grandma & grandpa showing up hoping to see their grandson get his merit badges & have to sit through this! You might be glad you have the police & a doctor handy because these folks are gonna need them! This might not be a public reprimand to you, but it sure isn't a private one! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

If this was brought up at a CoH I would bet the attendance at the next CoH would drop dramatically. Why should those who have no involvement in this incident or unit be forced to listen to a disciplinary talk about the Scouts who were hood surfing? Oh wait! I can answer that! They shouldn't! This should be dealt with but a CoH is not the proper place to deal with it. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

The looking out for #1 is where all the problems start! That and the attitude "if it's OK for me, then it's OK." Total disregard for others. Self-centered & the feeling of being entitled to whatever! Yeah GW, maybe servant leadership is what's needed! I'd still like to go with leading by example, though.
-
Well, the reason I was asking is there are many definitions of servant leadership & I was interested in what your definition of this term was, Bob. And that post of yours FScouter was not exactly, how do we say it, on topic now was it. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
I'm with on this John! If someone would have been seriously hurt & this made the news you can guarantee that "they were on the way home for a BSA PLC meeting" would have been included in the story. And again, Scouting would be looked upon poorly. If a Scout is to live the Oath & Law in his everyday life then outside the sphere of Scouting doesn't exist. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
Well, since it happened outside the sphere of Scouting I guess we should just do nothing!

Any boy under the age of 18 can be a Scout. A rehabbed 15 year old heroin addict can be a Scout. The pastor's 14 year old son can be a Scout. The bi-racial 12 year old boy can be a Scout. A quadriplegic 11 year old boy can be a Scout. Any boy under the age of 18 & old enough to be a Tiger who subscribes to the membership requirements of the BSA can be a Scout.
-
I would agree Bob. I still feel leading by example is the most important way to lead. Exactly, what does "servant leadership" mean to you, Bob?
-
If ya can't go to camp without your laptop then maybe you shouldn't go to camp!
-
What is "actively serving" in a leadership position? To me it is actually doing something in a leadership position, not just holding the title. Now what is done is up to the Scout & his Scoutmaster. If the Scout meets his Scoutmasters expectations of the leadership position, then he advances. Servant leadership has nothing to do with it! And stating it does is totally absurd! A good leader will first be a good follower. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
In Scouting a servant leader uses leadership skills to help his followers learn and grow and succeed, rather than for his or her own comfort or recognition. Actually, this would be leading by example. Servant leadership is not the same thing. Leading by example is one of the most effective ways to lead. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
You avoid the point of the discussion ed in that the method of leadership he used was one of servant leadership he coached and mentored those who followed him for the purpose of their benefit and not his own. While I do not disagree with the theology of your post it has nothing to do with the topic of the thread. The point of my post was to refute your statement that Jesus' purpose on earth was. It wasn't servant leadership. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
Jesus led by example. He didn't alter his style to fit the group, the group was forced to fit His style. And you could also say Jesus was an excellent follower. He followed exactly what His Father wanted Him to do. To be a good leader, one must be a good follower. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Great point hops! We rely heavily on technology! Maybe too heavily.

God so loved the earth that he sent as saviour his only Son....and not a sub committee. And your point is..........................?
