If I'm not mistaken, all those thing could be done in uniform if approval from the Council Executive Committee was obtained first. And I would think the excellent PR that would raise money for the family of a fellow cub scout with cancer or solicit donations for care packages for our troops overseas or asking for the loan or donation of a special wheelchair so a handicapped scout could participate would be a driving factor in the Council Executive Committee approving such requests. Just one man's opinion! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Diversity thoughts?
evmori replied to hot_foot_eagle's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Vicki, I have never felt being politically correct was the way to go. All that does is water things down when they don't need watering down. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10 -
InfoScouter was kind enough to type up the related information. Youth and adults at the unt level are not to solicite donations for individual or unit activities. Them's the rules, eh! Well then that means no fundraising at all! Any kind! No popcorn! No car washes! No hoagie sales! Those would all be soliciting donations for unit activities! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Diversity thoughts?
evmori replied to hot_foot_eagle's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Let me take a stab at "politically correct". Politically correct = Let's not offend anyone! -
How is the Scout gonna know? He asks! The asks his SM or ASM or even the last Eagle in the Troop.

Here's how I see it. There is nothing wrong with stating chapter & verse from a BSA publication. Where the rub comes is when the poster stating chapter & verse tosses in their interpretation of that chapter & verse as the final authority on that chapter & verse. There are many BSA policies & rules & regs that are open to interpretation. And there could be many interpretations that are correct and there are many that could be wrong. That is where discussions & forums like these help us wade through. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Ya got a good Scout there GKlose!

Why not instead of assigning some arbitrary person, hypothetically, just for fun...-> let the boy take the lead and pick who he feels is best qualified to answer his questions? You rebel Who in their right mind would let this type of behavior happen ?????

packsaddle, Sure the SM can delegate & should when necessary. But isn't the responsible party for a Scout's Eagle Project the Scout? And if the Scout needs assistance with his Eagle Project shouldn't he be the one initiating the asking for said help? It seems with an Eagle coordinator, these important steps are relegated to an adult thereby lessening the responsibility on the Scout. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

packsaddle, I guess I'm disagreeing with those who feel a Eagle Coordinator is necessary!
-
I'm in jblake47's camp! If help is needed, the Scout should ask for it! When I was a SM, that is exactly what I told my Scouts. And dang it, they asked if they needed help! I think we forget it is the boy who are advancing, not the adults! Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Eamonn, The role of the Eagle counselor, at least as explained in our councils WEagle packet, is to have someone i the unit who is thoroghly knowledgeable in the process to act as a resource for the scout in completeing his paperwork and preparing for the board and court. Shouldn't this be the Scoutmaster?

When did you first take Scout leader training.
evmori replied to Bob White's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
This is heading somewhere but not quite sure where! Guess my info won't be included since Bob has me on ignore. -
Where do you begin in this situation? Take the job as the CC & drag this Pack into the actual way things are done~
-
Thanks GKlose. Yup sounds more like an exam than a BOR. What should be happening is the BOR asking the Scout how he learned the knot & what it can be used for instead of having him tie it! Sounds like this is more of an adult led unit than a boy lead unit!

As an assistant Scoutmaster you have no authority to make changes except through the example of your own behavior. If ya read the original post, you will see that GKlose is a committee member, not an assistant Scoutmaster. Please explain, GKlose, what you mean by retest? I think that is where we need to start. Some examples would also help clarify. Thanks Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Asking for material donations is the same as asking for the money to buy them. No it isn't! Life Scout working on their Eagle Project do it all the time! In fact, it is encouraged! And the Unit Money Earning application doesn't address asking for material donations. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10

Adults without kids in the program?
evmori replied to Gold Winger's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I've been on both ends, too, & without a kid in the program does let you focus more on the program. There are pluses & minus' to both. -
Why give a boring speech? Sometimes ya go no say in this!

I am not saying that it's a good idea to have so many hats on one hat rack, but why worry about him if he is not yours to supervise? Why worry? Maybe because this guys is too spread out to be effective & is doing more harm than good????

Thanks for the update jet526! Bet he doesn't lose this one!

Just completed this badge with a couple of Scouts. They watched Remember the Titans!

Let's not get confused here! Active as far as being a member of a unit is different than serving actively. According to the BSA, active as far as being a member goes means registered. Serving actively is not the same thing & is not defined (I don't think) by the BSA. Ed Mori 1 Peter 4:10
-
Eagle is the only rank that is worded "serve actively for a period of six months". Star & Life are worded "serve actively for four months in one or more of the following positions of responsibility" and "serve actively for six months in one or more of the following positions of responsibility".
