  1. 550 cord is also an option for Woggles with lots of color options, but my favorite material is clothesline.
  2. In East Carolina Council, Camp Boddie, formerly known as Camp Bonner South, has 5 weeks BS camp, a single 1/2 week CS camp, and a week of NYLT. 6.5 weeks total. Pamlico Sea Base has 10 weeks, but not all treks are available at all times. Camp Boddie also has a week long camp rental for the diabetes organization. An aside, I heard there were over 100 folks at Camp Boddie and PSB at the workday today to help clean up from Irene. Staff Alumni, and probably more volunteers will be there next weekend, and the OA will be having an Ordeal in 2 weeks. Camp Charles, one of ECC's other properties, suffered minor damage, and was cleaned up today and is ready for an event next weekend.
  3. WB knots will not happen. Sea Scouts have been trying for years now to get WB knots for uniform wear since Sea Scout leaders cannot wear their beads in uniform. National has stated that the beads are the recognition, and that a knot is not needed.
  4. Not a HA base, but a remote location, at least back in 89. LaDomain, Quebec, Canada. other than the first and last days we didn't see anyone else. Beautiful scenary, completely on our own, and fun, at least fun once the weather warmed up . However I did learn to hate float plane pilots, seemed that one of them deliberatey went over us after take off to shower us with ice cold glacier water. edited: here's a link. http://www.naturaltourist.com/content/content.asp?CID=231&LID=11&CGYID=32 http://www.canot-camping.ca/english/index.asp (This message has been edited by eagle92)
  5. Not a unit but day camp. We had stuff left behind, some with names, some without. Even after sending an email to folks about lost and found, and having 1 parent call and being told yes I have it, stuff still has not been picked up. In Nov, I will be having a Day camp RT session, and delivering stuff to the units that I know of. Everythign unclaimed is getting pitched.
  6. I like singing, esp if I am a suppose to be a supporting voice.
  7. We give it back at the meeting. But if things do not get claimed, they either get thrown away or kept.
  8. I think part of the problem is that there is no standard. Someone mentioned spanking as child abuse. But some public school jurisdictions DO allow spanking, if a procedure is followed, and I know of at least one private school that would not accept students unless their parents signed off on spanking. Funny thing is this, when the local authority overseeing the school banned spanking, not only did the faculty object and protest, but the parents and STUDENTS protested AGAINST the ban, wanting spanking to be continued. Some stats to support their cause is the increase in disciplinary infractions, including suspensions and dismissals. So which is spanking, child abuse or corrective measure? In regards to notching arrows, is is hazing a prospective member, or is it a physical reminder that me made a commitment the night before and that he needs to keep it? Carrying someone to a 50 gallon water drum with his clothes on to clean him off, is it hazing, or trying to promote cleanliness and prevent foul smells and disease? Shall I go on? This reminds me of the guy who shot the bear defending his family, did he do something illegal, or was he within his rights to protect lives?
  9. ALWAYS DATE THE PHOTO! and label who they are before you put it away... /i> IN PENCIL NOT PEN as the ink will damage the photographs in the long term, but not the lead.
  10. Oh I agree with some of the ridiculousness that is out there. I remember being asked to get 50' of shoreline, and surprised the SPL when I spread out in a 50' straight line the sand that I got from the shoreline. I also remember being able to notch arrows of those OA candidate who spoke, and sending home those who were warned 3 times or refused to work. When the you cannot send them home policy first came out, we had an incident that no one knew how to handle, and it grew so fast that two groups of candidates stopped working. IMHO they should have been sent home, but our hands were tied. Best thing to do is to isolate the individual causing the problem and place hin in his own work party away from everyone else. As for no more tapping out, I know it's been mentioned elsewhere, but OA stopped the practice b/c it was considered child abuse in Ohio, and maybe a few other states, and there was an Ohio lawsuit in 1983. 3 lawyers on the national OA committee were tasked with reviewing the situation. We all know where that went.
  11. Wing, Cannot get a really good look to help. On the first two late 50s early 60s photos, I'd try using a magnifying glass and look at the jambo and/or OA flap that a few of the folks are wearing. That should narrow it down some. Good luck.
  12. My only caveat is not to A) burn yourself out and B) don't do too many things that it affects your primary role, being a DL. Then again I'm one to talk good luck.
  13. Well Since I was the one quoted, I'll tell you where that came from. As I mentioned it came form several volunteer trainings I've attended as an adult, where is was mentioned that singing for stuff is no longer allowed as it can be considered hazing. Also at PDL-1 at the camp visit it was mentioned. While the "discussion" started out b/c of the 'OWA TAGO SIAM" skit, it did move on to other common practices of my youth, i.e. notching arrows at ordeals, singing for lost items, doing pushups, etc. Also in regards to arrows being notched and other things related to OA there are Operations Updates and other materials on the topic of hazing.

    Parade Ideas

I sure do miss the "Krewe of Kubs" parade that consisted of I don't know how many dens form all over the council doing a Mardi Gras parade with the Cubs throwing beads, doubloons, cups, and other MG throws. I was in that parade, and watched it up until HS, when I marched with the JROTC unit in another parade that was the same day. Yes the walking can get boring. Sing songs, had out stuff if permitted, rotate, heck try marching. I know, I know, but the challenge of keeping in step and aligned may be somethign the kids would like to do.
  15. Peri, In regards to tucking in, I cannot remember seeing a picture of a scout that had an untucked shirt in any BSA literature, except when it's an picture of the scouts in action. Also the uniform inspection sheet says "the basic rule is neatness." grant you that is in regards to the Field Uniform, but can be interpreted for all uniforms. I agree the new squared off cut off the new shirts do allow the shirt to be worn untucked, but I haven't seen a picture with that being the case. Using common sense, you can deduce that the shirt is to be tucked since all official photos have the shirt tucked in. But back to my questions: how were the troops organized, and how long did they meet prior to jambo?
  16. Question, did any council's mention that some of the jambo fee is a tax write off? I remember hearing from a parent that part of the jambo fee, specfically the gear that would be used at jambo then turned over to the camp, was able to be written off as a donation? I think they said it was told to them by the director of support services, and this was back int he day.,
  17. A few things 1) I'm one of those old fogey's that remind scouts that if they wear the uniform, they need to wear it correctly, tuck in the shirt. And yes the T-shirt is part of the activity uniform. However I know that if you are doing stuff, the shirt may come untucked and don't have a problem while you are doing stuff. But it uniforming. 2)Forgetting things and singing for them, while that may have been the norm back in the day, heck I remember singing for stuff, it is now considered hazing by BSA, and can be reported. NCS talked about this, other trainings talked about it, and PDL-1 even mentioned it being hazing when it was done at my class. 3)Agree need to ask them not to shine in the eyes. However if after repeated attempts to correct the offender don't work, I have politely shown the offender why it is important to aim for the chest by shining a light in their eyes. I've only done that less than a handful of times as usually talking to them works 4) Being late for curfew is a big deal. I have seen what can happen to scouts after a curfew. While I do not think the group should be punished, I do think the two folks should have a talking to. Depending upon the severity of the situation, they may need to be punished. If they were late coming home after an event at Jambo due to crowds and what not, I may remind them to better manage their time. Now I do have a few questions for ya, and please do not take offense. 1) How was the Jambo troop organized? By that I mean was it organized by districts and did you get a chance to meet the leaders and learn about them prior to the event. 2) How many prep trips did the jambo troop do prior to jambo? My jambo trip also did a HA trip in Canada, so we were meeting about 18-24 months out, doing training campouts andfundraisers. So we got to know folks, both leaders and scouts in our patrol.
  18. Sbemis1, a couple of ideas to help out with your situation. 1) Check and makesure that the training codes, titles, and dates are correct. I know a few years ago National didn't have codes for some of the older training. I was told to use the new name and code, but put the original date of training, i.e. CS Basic Leader Training in 1998 became TCDL Specific, CSDL Specific, WDL Specific, CM Specific, and Pack Committee Specific. Now national has added codes for the older trainings, and now requires everything to match up. 2) When you turn in your paperwork, keep a copy, that way you just resend if needed. 3) Once they get your records and update them, ask for a copy of them. Then make a copy of it so that if they mess it up again, you can send in a copy that thjey sent you.

  20. Next thing you know we'll be packing chemical toilets on Philmont treks. Actually the girls in my old Sea Scout Ship wanted a chemical toilet on the island we were camping on, as well as a GP tent to put it in. I kid you not.
  21. UC, If memory serves, those were the ones that national produced, when they did tan strips. Now everyone uses Ship's Stores as they are AWESOME and have better quailtity on some of their merchandise, ok most of their merchandise (the stuff they don't get from national).
  22. Sterno can (those are still legal) and rocket engine.
  23. Base, So were you a Curlew, Raven, Bull, or Wolf? Eagle92 Cocky Curlew Brownsea 22 1988, NOAC
  24. Update. Still nor power, and now no telephone. Spent morning cleaningup our yard and neighbor's. lots and lots of clean up to do in the city. Saw one house that missed getting hit by about 3-6 inches. saw a 30+ foot limb with a buch of branches suspended inthe air by powerlines. But we were very fortunate.
  25. Well we lost power around lunch. in-laws have power still, theirs never went out, so we are visiting. Driving over, we saw some wind damage. we expect some gusts until 3AM, so the boys are "camping" in the hallway again tonite. All you folks up north be careful.
