TT's problem is the one we encounter. It doesn't matter what scale you use whether USPS, or a NBS certified one, at home or at a pack meeting. If the car is over 5 onces on the scale used at the district PWD, it won't race until it is. And once it's weighed in, the Cubs won't touch it until race time.

Camps.....What sort of Facilities????

GREAT SCOTTTT!!!!!!! Our info can be found here http://eccbsa.org/Camping/Property%20Rental We charge $4/scout per weekend; $6/Scout with showers. Most expensive thing is also the largest: Dinning Hall (dining area only) at $125/group. Everything is pretty reasonable IMHO. EDITED: Ok in full disclosure, some facilities are not available at this time due to damage from Hurricane Irene. We are still cleaning up and repairing things.(This message has been edited by eagle92) -
Gifts are not really needed, and as Base points out, can go way overboard. However some of the gifts I've seen with BA22 abd JLTC and heard about are the following Duplicate patrol flag to give to the patrol councilor with everyone's signature Patrol or troop t-shirt with everyone's siganture Oversized beads with a note written on them The "Green Bar Bill Bubble Award" Basically a wooden trophy stand with an engraved plate and a xlarge green marble on top. Picture of the patrol with sigs on the back. Helping Hand: Glove on a wooden 2x4" base painted gold. BONUS put the glove in the Scout Sign for their primary program.

OK here's my recommendation, so take it for what it's worth. 1) Contact your COR to inform them of the possible donation. It will have to be donated to them to get the tax writeoff. 2)IF COR approves, A) get it done and B) make sure you know that other groups within the organization will use it AND BE OK WITH IT.(caps for emphasis something similar happened with one unit and they were upset until IH said it was the church's property and not the troops personal property) 3) YES you can have a sign saying donated by XYA 4) AND THIS IS IMPORTANT, tell yoru DE AFTER the fact Seriously if you tell your DE, he may try to get the donation diverted to council. We had a unit that got canoes and equipment dontated to them, to the tune of $5,000 and some change. Council found out, and then tried to get the same amount for the same things donated to them, and it didn't work out. Good news is that while the troop was in existance, the equipment was used on a regular basis and lent out to other units. Bad news is that once the unit disbanded, access toteh canoes and equipment was lost. Also the donor was misinformed: they thought they were giving to the scouts as a whole and not one particular unit. part of that was the fact that the troop promiesed to lend out the canoes as requested. So the canoes sat in someone's back yard for a few years. Good news, the unit is reorganized and access to canoes is back, or so I'm told.

'Rat, I just read your message for whatever reason. I know for a fact that that didn't occur while I was an adult in my old council. Elements of the 4th MarDiv and 4thMarWing did a heck of a lot for the council camp, to the point of supplying a battalion for support for one of our major events (10-12K+ attendees). I also remember Marines and corpsman getting TDA to summer camp staff. Although that has been a great relationship, the results of corpsman did get HMMWVs banned from the property, unless an officer is present. An aside, I didn't realize a HMMWV can be flipped over, just ask two corpsman I met. -
Don't get me started. I sent national some corrections about misinformation, and I think it's still there.

Adult and Scout teams vs each other? Again, generally no... not a good idea. Not necessarily. I've participated in one such competitions and it was a hoot. It was the annual Chapter Chief - Chapter Advisor Egg Toss at Fall Fellowship. I missed the first year due to other duties as well as my last year as chapter adviser, again due to other duties at Fall Fellowship. But that second year was a beaut!

Actually Slushies were #1 at my camp's TPm followed by Nachos and then Pizza. We had a personal pan pizza oven, and it was AWESOME.

In my council, the row boats get moved to the only camp that Cubs can go boating in as all the others are located on rivers. Since the majority of Cubs are not classified as swimmers, they just move the boats. Everyting else is available for rent at the main camp. Row Boats are availabel for all at the camp with the lake. -
One competitions I'd like to see is "Are You Smarter Than A First Class Scout" and it's everything covered by the T-2-1 requirements and IOLS. Use it as a check off to get some folks trained

Hypothetically, you need to follow your conscious. If you think more needs to be done, then report it. If you do not, then don't. But be prepared to deal with the hypothetical consequences as a result, both good and bad. Hypothetically say there was an issue at camp, and hypothetically the CD freaks out over it. Say that you don't and you keep reminding the CD what must be done. Be prepared for the hypothetical negative consequences.

My council has 6 camps in it's 20 counties The camp furthest west is 2 hours or 98.14 miles from the main camp and HA base, which are right next to each other on the same scout reservation. An d it is 2 hrs 39 mins / 136.37 miles from teh one furthest east. Can't find the info on the two remaining camps in the center of the council, but they are approx 20 minutes away by car from the main camp and HA base. I've been told between 5 and 10 minutes via motorboat. Also a neighboring council has their camp about 47 miles from our western most camp. What's funny is that the neighboring council's camp and scout office are closer to my district than my council's. Forgot to add, my home camp was 45 miles from the neighboring council's camp. When my old council changed it's name, it dropped the county that had the council camp in it b/c it was in a different state. it was weird.(This message has been edited by eagle92)

My troop growing up, mid to late 80s, was one of those that gave the awards at COHs. You were recognized ASAP in front of the troop, you may assume duties of the rank, i.e. signing off on rank, serving as SPL, etc, before getting the badge. But the badge was given at the COH. In regards to color guards, Gunny is spot on. I did ceremonial drill in HSJROTC and we practiced 1.5 hours 4 days a week. Sometimes we did practices on our own during lunch and free period,if the armoury was open. Ditto the color guard. Now Scouting is not suppose to be as disciplined as the military, but a nice color guard ceremony is doable with a little practice. I know our summer camp staff practiced it alot. But what was funny was remembering one grouchy old retired MGySgt who served on staff. If you were a staffer, he had high expectations. If you were a boy Scout, he expected you to know what you were doing. But what the old man loved was watching Cubs doing the flag ceremonies, mistakes and all. -
The main council camp and HA base are used extensively year round. Sometimes multiple, conflicting events are scheduled for the same weekend in the same areas, i.e. OA Ordeal going on while units are using the wildeness area, or NYLT going on and a unit is added to the schedule to use the same building, or WB staff weekend, Winter camp, and Summer camp staff interviews all in the same weekend, and schedule to use the same facilities. Hopefully that problem is resolved as the scheduler is now in another council. As for the other 4 camps, I know 1, the one in my district, is used extensively. In fact it is #2 in usage, surpassing the HA base. I want to say one of the remaining 3 is in the same boat as mine. As for the last 2, I do not know.

Rick, Cubs are not allowed to use .22s, only BB Guns, and then only at district/council events.
-
2Cub, Sorry I didn't see your post. let em explain. I am very, very, VERY fortunate that our council operates 6 camps spread throught it's territory. Ok so 4 are located within 10 miles of each other inthe geographic center of the council (2 on one side of a river, 2 on the other, and the 4 camps form 2 scout reservations). But the other 2 camps are out towards the edges of the council to allow more folks to use council camps. One of them is in my district, and is 22 minutes away from my house in the nearest city. The other council camp like mine also holds CSDC and is in a similar situation I am told.

Camps.....What sort of Facilities????
Eagle92 replied to Basementdweller's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Depends upon the proposed use of the camp? Except for wilderness camps, i.e. nothing but nature, at an absolute minimum I think the following would be needed. Every campsite would have access to a sanitary toilet facility within 300' but not less than 100'. I bold that for emphasis b/c that wording, or very similar wording, is found in 2 different BSA documents in regards to Cub Scouts: Council Family Camp National Standards and Pack Overnighter Site Approval Standards. Grant you the Pack Overniter form is one found in BALOO, and councils are suppsoe to have a list of approved CS sites, but how many actually do? -
Short, No problem, I was hoping the "peanut gallery" comment and smiley would be clues that I was not upset with anyone. I then just edited why I posted what I did. Funny thing happened tonite. I got a message earlier that one of the council exec board members was coming to RT to discuss the cutting at out local camp. Now I knew this was going to be a long meeting, you mention camp and passions are aroused, and had an important agenda for the Cub Scouts that needed to be done. We got 3 major events in the next3 weeks, and another next month. So I planned on this guy to come to the CS side towards the end. He never made it out of the BSRT. We went ahead and ended early, and everyone interested in the camp issue went to the BSRT. Well this camp is not the main camp. In fact up until 2 years ago and the current SE taking over, the camp was neglected. Trying to make repairs, even if you were the one paying for it, was like pulling teeth. It got to the point that some folks just did the needed repairs without telling anyone. But again that has changed and the camp is vibrant again. it is the #2 camp in attendance in the council, only behind the summer camp, and surpassing our HA base. AND that was with the camp being closed for over 2 months and reservations having to be cancelled, and activities moved elsewhere. But here is the deal, even with al the attendance, FOS dollars are needed to keep the camp going. AND that doesn't include funding that has been set aside specifcally for the camp Boomer is dead on with the city comments. I was told that the reason why my old council sodl their camp and got the new reservation, was because the city came up to it's doorstep eventually, and the neighbors complained about the traffic, noise, etc. Reminded me of folks moving into a city that has grown up around a military air base, and then complain about the jet noise.

When I first was part of a BOR, I was a PL and a brand new FC scout, getting it the month before. I was informed when I showed up to handover my patrol to the APL, 'cause they needed me to sit on a BOR. I essentially winged it. No formal briefing or training.

How about green jeans?

Crossman are another BB gun my council uses. One district has a set of both for their day camp, and they are in superb condition. One thing that helps with the Daisy's is having a gunsmith work on them. One year my day camp was given some really crappy ones, and our BB gun director, who is a gunsmith, worked on them in his spare time and they were SWEEEEEETTTT!

732 is correct, there were stipulations that had to be met with land grants. Didn't meet the requirements, it went back to the colony, or throne, as the case may be.

Base, 1) CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2) While I am not a WBer, I did go through BA22 and staffed JLTC. My BA22 patrol sucked, and sucked royally. We were not a patrol, but a group of kids thrown together basically for the entire week. Despite the hardship and challenges of the course, i learned something, and these 20+ years later, it is a positive expereince. When I did JLTC staff, a lot of time and energy went into the course by everyone who staffed. If anyone would be called a "slacker" on staff, it would be me as I joined the staff about 90 days prior to the course and missed some staff training. From what you describe of your course, it appears that the staff did not put in the time and energy to do the course justice. Try to take these negatives in mind when you conduct training courses. 3)Please do the beading ceremony, BUT get folks who are important to you to do it: your SM and your Cubs. Let's face it, you did the course for THEM. You expected to learn and grow for THEM. Even if the beading ceremony is not important to you, and the Cubs may not understand the significance now, your SM will appreciate it, when the parents see the ceremony and what you did for YOUR Cubs, they will appreciate how much they mean to you, and eventually your Cubs will also realize the significance of the ceremony and appreciate it better. True story, my SM growing up was an Arrowman, and very active in the OA. He was one of those quiet hardworking individuals who was not pretentious.By the time I got reinvolved with the OA, he was out of scouting. I never realized he was a Vigil Honor member until after my Vigil. made me appreciate what he did for me and my troop even more. Again CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But why is it showing up on the advancement reports from internet advancement and PM? -
I'm curious as to when adults became responsible for scheduling BORs? With the exception of EBORs, which involve district/council folks, I have been taught and have repeated that "it's his BOR, his responsibility. And even with the EBORs, some of them do have the Life scout doing all the contacting. Anyway growing up the troop scheduled BORs the week after the committee meeting. We'd tell the CC we are ready the nite of their meeting, and they would get the adults there. It was always on a meeting nite as from when I joined until 1991 or 92, Scouts served on BORS up to FC. It took some time for the 1989 rules to take affect with us for whatever reason. I think that it was a mistake to take older scouts off the BORs. An aside to the 1989 advancement changes. We did know that with the removal of time requirements it was possible for a scout to go from Scout to First Class in a single nite, but we didn't know how to go about it. We had one new scout, he'd been with us offically since May, but had been visiting us with his Webelos den or by himself on and off since Feb or Mar do just that. A few weeks after summer camp he had met all of the requirements for T-2-1 and approached the CC for his BORs. First time it happened to use, so we had him in for Tenderfoot, let him have a break while we did the next one, had him do Second Class, another break for the next Scout's BOR, then the new Scout had his third BOR. Later found out that we could have done 1 BOR for all three. Anyway absolute worse BOR situation I ever saw was one new troop couldn't get enough adults together to conduct one. The poor scout had waited 2 months for one, and finally the SM had enough, asked if it would be OK if several folks from outside the troop could do it at a camporee. So he had 2 SMs from other troops and a discom member on the BOR. THANKFULLY that situation has corrected itself and the troop doesn't have that problem.
