Here are my thoughts on the CS program. Please take it with a grain of salt as A) I've been with Cubs for 3 years now and B) i am only repeating what I'm hearing fromthe cubs. 1)As previously mentioned, there is a lot of options for youth these days. I hate to say it but I rarely get 100% of my den to show up. Football, basketball, daseball, etc all take their toll. 2) Some of the ideas are boring. Or to put it as my Cub said it 'There is no action. Grant you some of that is my fault, but someof the requirements are boring. 3) When are we going camping again? For all the scouters who say ' Cubs don't need to camp, HORSEHOCKEY!!!!!!! (and yes that is me screaming). Green Bar Bill himslef said "Outing is three-fourths of Scouting" (yes that is a MISPRINT in the current BSHB, just do the math). Notice he didn't say Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, or Explorer Scouts (I think they were called that at the time he wrote it) he said SCOUTING and that includes Cubs. THEY WANT THE OUTDOORS!!!!!! (caps for emphasis) 4) PROGRAM RESOURCE BOOK. Ok I've fallen into this I admit it. The resoruce book can be dry. I try to use it to HELP with planning, but I admit whenm in a bind, or out of time, I go by the book. AND IT IS VERY DRY!. Glad theya er coming back with themes. But i admit I will probably feel like a Civil war officer or NCO readign the drill manual the night before he drills his units since I'm now CSRT commissioner and I have not used themes before. But from all that I've heard it helps tremendously in adding pizazz. 5) More challenging requriements, it seems as if some things keep getting repeated over and over again. Now in regards to Dale, maybe I'm an old fogey. Maybe I'm the product of a mother who read about the New Orleans case of the 1970s. Maybe it's b/c I'm in the Bible Belt. But if the Dale decision was reversed, I think we would lose a lot of COs and Scouts. Heck I had a CO tell me that they did not want their unit anymore PRIOR to the Dale decision, even after telling them thjey they approve their leaders, etc. The did not feel comfortable, and they no longer wanted a unit.

Ana, If your shop is a nationally owned one, the manager or asst.( you can tell b/c employees wear teh gold loops and managers in dress uniforms) will usually take an order for you, and make calls to other stores to get it for you. So see if you can order it. If your shop is a council owned one, then try contacting a national one.

For the ladies: how do you deal with ill-fitting pants?
Eagle92 replied to momof2cubs's topic in Uniforms
Actually what happened to the skirts and culottes was that ladies complained about them as well. They were not big sellers, in fact I only remember selling them to pros back in the day. As for district committee members, they can wear any uniform they want, may I suggest a Sea Scout one? I personally like the Whites. As for unit scouters on the committee, they, and anyone else for that matter, can always the wear the dress uniform: gray skirt or trousers, white shirt, stipped uniform tie, blue blazer and blazer device. Finally, I don't need the number anymore. Wife is adamant about NOT being a leader at this time. Now she has thought about when the boys get in Venturing, but Oldest wants to be a Sea Scout though. -
Click, I see where the G2A says parent are allowed In cases where parents or guardians insist on attending a board of review (or in Sea Scouts, a bridge of review), they should be counseled on why this is not permitted. Their presence can change how their son addresses questions, and the opportunity to further self-reliance and courage may be lessened. However, if parents or guardians insist on being present, they must be permitted to attend. p45 Funny thing it's not in the wording, but in a box that form what I've read is usally a restatement of a policy in the. FWIW I tend to skip those boxes since it's in the details. MEA CULPA But I was unable to find it in the details.

Eagle92 replied to momof2cubs's topic in Uniforms
Not a lady, but can tell ya about the wife? 1) When registered as a Venturing leader in '98-99, she wore the Venturing shirt, with gray shorts she got from somewhere I do not remember. Still has the uniform in the attic 2) When a troop committee member, she didn't wear the uniform. The only time you knew she was involved with the troop was at committee meetings, and when she was getting signatures for the unit checks. 3) When she said she would be a CS leader for middle son, she stated that she HATED WITH A PASSION the tan and green uniform, and would refuse to wear it. She did ask if she could wear a vintage uniform, so she has a 1950s "Den Mother's" uniform that is 95% complete in the closet. All it is missing is one fully embroidered number. Got her that for Christmas one year. Unfortunately shortly after getting that, she changed her mind. AN ASIDE: If you give your wife an almost complete vintage uniform for Christmas, you might be a Uniform Policeman. -
Frank, In some councils, the EBOR are the ones that review and approve the Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project prior to it being done.
-
As someone else commented, parent are NOT allowed at EBORs. One of the few times, in fact the only time if memory serves, that a parent is specifically barred from being with their scout.

Base, 1) CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR HARD WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And yes I'm screaming at you at the top of my lungs in Radio Shack weather radio volume. 2) I will be kinda nice having a bit of time to myself. ROTFLMAO that is the funniest thing I've heard. You know you are a true scouting addict and will do whatever it takes for your scouts. Again congrats!

Sailing, Alas, Sea Scouts are considered VENTURERS for membership stat purposes, despite being the second oldest BSA program, olde that the OA, Cub Scouts, and Venturing at 100 years of age this year. But you already knew that.
-
Base, With no disrespect intended, but unfortunately I have seen one council act on a unsupported accusation. See the other thread on this topic for details. Or PM me.
-
MBS, Without knowing all the details, all I can tell you is that the BSA will err on the side of protecting kids, even when things show that the kids lied. Again, a friend of mine had their membership revoked b/c a scout lied, stating that the leader made a pass at them. Doesn't matter that it's a "He said, she said" with no witnesses or evidence. Doesn't matter that the scout has a history of staying out late after hours, getting into mischief, and then lying about the situation to save himself. I should know as he lied about me saying I gave him permission to stay out late when I caught him and a few buddies out, and off the university we were staying at. OH did I mention that it was a case of 3 adults saying one thing, and 4 youth saying something? Eventually 3 of the youth agreed with what we adults were saying.
-
I know that the Silver Beaver recipient who had their membership revoked b/c the scout lied did attend her former troop's activities as a parent, did attend the council banquet that the son was recognized as an Eagle Scout at, and did stand when the MC asked that all Silver Beaver recipient in the audience stand when making that year's SB presentation. BUT I also know that one former leader basically was told to have no contact whatsoever with is former unit.

After one event where the rumors were flying, 2/3 of the folks left early, and the worse that happened was about 25 minutes of heavy rain, I got a weather radio. I got a Radio Shack one Benefits: easy to buy Can buy a separate power pack that will allow you to plug it into the radio and recharge batteries. Has it so that you can look up the SAME codes and set up several counties simultaneously. Negatives: VERY LOUD EVAN AT THE LOWEST SETTING (caps to imitate the weather radio at the lowest setting if I did it at the loudest, it would probably be VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY TO THE 10TH POWER LOUD Very poor customer service. Mine was a gift, and it was missing the clip to attach it to the belt. tried to replace it at the local store, no can do without a receipt. Now i could understand no refunds without a receipt, but no exchanges? I called the company's 1800 Customer no service number, and it was really bizarre, in fact they hung up on me and I was not being the typical upset, scream at you over the phone. No, I was telling them about one company I worked for "2, 20 Rule" i.e do something right, only 2 people will be told. do something bad, 20 will be told. And they just hung up on me Also the plastic antenna cover will break off.

Well I know that when I ran the district banquet, in addition to paying the rental fee and awards, we gave out top TCDL, top CSDL, Top WDL, Top ACM, top CM, ad nauseum up to the DAM. about 14 awards in all if memory serves. Plus we had to buy supplies for serving the food, i.e.plates, cups, etc. Drinks, programs, and table cloths and stuff for table decorations. It does add up fast. Also in my neckof the woods, the awards banquet money that is a surplus going into training.

Calico, If memory serves, the BSA was looking to sell energy bars, and prototypes were made. I was told the reason w was b/c the GSUSA threatened to sue the BSA over copy right infringement or some kinda excuse. They were good and I would've bought them. I think I ate a case of them when the council office moved and I was helping out way back in the day. Hey I needed the energy moving all the stuff I was moving.

I know when I was working at camps in the UK, many scout associations only have the youth in a shirt and the kids can wear any pants. I got pic of scouts in some very funny pants and shorts. didn't look uniform at all.
-
HMM, Interesting. Need a lot more info. Now I had something similar happen to one of my scouts. When dad found out he was planning to enlist in the USAF in the delayed entry program, he kicked him out. The scout ended up living at first the SM's house until he left for boot camp, then an ASM's house until he completed HS and went active duty. He had to get national to approve the Eagle since a BOR could not have been arranged prior to basic, and when he came back, it was after the grace period. Also what the heck is a Red and Green? Never heard of that before.
-
It really depends. My pack has crossed them over in Dec. one time, and the boys were not ready. Another time we did it in Jan. and it was great. This year we were delayed, and they crossed over this past monday. Agree some Web IIs are chomping at the bit. Heck I got a Bear who want to start camping every month right now!
-
Taser, Without knowing details, there is not much we can say. I've been around a while, both as pro and vol, and I've seen and heard things on both sides of the case; adults did something, as well as the youth are lying.
-
Beav, Not necessarily get kicked out, but have the leaders on guard 24/7. Had a scout lie about about me to try and get out of trouble. Luckily other adults and scouts were around and bverified he was lying. But a year later he accused a very active and well respected leader of a YP violation. He was caught by the leader being out after hours when the leader was walking from the showers back to the campsite. To get out of trouble, he accused the leader of making a pass. Unfortunately it with no witnesses to collaborate, the leader was kicked out, investigated, but no charges were brought against them. Unfortunately I had to deal with the young man witht he OA, and always made darn sure someone else was around all the time.

In regards to references, I know that my council will reject an application that does not provide them. We had several leaders who were left off the 2011 charter for whatever reason (don't ask we found out that there were major errors on our charter when we started doing Internet Adavcnement: leaders not listed or listed in the wrong position, scouts missing, scouts that were dropped remaining on the charter, etc). We hastily redid the apps, skipping the references sicne we knew them, they were workign with the kids already, and from the pack's POV they had been vetted by the CO. Council kicked them back saying they needed references. My advice, make sure you keep a copy of the application.

Why are DEs idiots at times? Some are naturally Seriously, though sometimes they are told not to do or say something. And sometimes they don't know what's going on and are shocked too. I know I was told point blank not to attend OA events because "you don't have time to play Indian." So after that I didn't attend anything OA related. I was also told to not discuss the idea of having the council add $1 to the registration fee to cover insurance. And one time I didn't know that an individual was allowed back into the movement pending his court case (pre-Dale)and was completely shocked and speechless when I saw him. Only After I called the SE did he notify me that, oh yeah he's back pending the court case. Thanks alot.
-
We also had an individual denied due to a conviction last year, so the checks are being done. As to what DE's know, sometimes they don't know much. Trust me on that one, I wasn't told things I should have known about back in the day.

1) Has your CC gone through DL training at any level? 2) If DLs did not have the opportunity to do their own thing, then why are there Den Meeting Planner to help a DL plan their own meeting. 3) Some of the things in the book are not realistic or possible due to resources available.

AH here's the interesting thing. Our district PWD is sponsored by a local club, and they own and do everything: track, scales, prizes, scheduling, etc. All the activities person does is get the info and pass it along.
