Alas, I know of one unit that does that for their Eagle candidates. The committee gives them a mock BOR to see if they are ready for the real thing. They do not wan the scouts going without their say. Remember at one RT talking EBORs, just when the polcicies changed, and one mentioned how he does nto understand why other units do not do a committee mock EBOR like the old book said to do. Tried to tell them he was misinterpreting the book, but would not listen.

BD, If memory serves, the reason why pro's wear them is that, although they work for and are employed by the council, the entire process goes through the region, and they are considered regional employees working on the council level. At least that is my recollection of the explanation many years ago.

Yep I survived. I had a most excellent time with my Tiger, although he would rather me "go away." It was funny, I'd try to help him do BB guns and he would say 'I know daddy, I know.' and ignore me. But when the BB director would come over and tell him the exact same thing, he listened. Also he was the biggest instigator. He got the entire den singing the two Cub Scout drinking songs almost all the time. We had some challenges at camp this year. Thankfully I didn't have to deal with them, although I heard a lot about them. And I was asked twice to come back as PD. Don't know if that will be possible. Oldest is interested in resident camp, but my work situation is "in motion." One of my coworkers' cancer has come back and when I left last week, we had no idea what would be going on. Hopefully I'll find out tomorrow. Would love to do it, but don't know if it is possible.

If you want to go hardcore, US Geological Survey maps can be downloaded from their website once you set up an account. You can download it (it is a VERY big file), and print it on a plotter if you have one or take ti to Staples and print it up for about $12. Or you can order it for $15 from them. Cool thing is that the new topo maps A) use satellite imagery with the topo info overlays and B) uses UTM instead of Lat and Long. Only problem is that it's one heck of a big map. Another thing I've done is make my own 8.5 x 11 using Google Earth for the satellite imagery and then cutting and pasting the declination info from NOAA, which is more up to date than the USGS maps.

Z, FYI if you are using the online IG, it was replaced with one in 2009 or thereabouts, but that was never put online. And somewhere i heard that they are not making another one. Yep it's a very common problem with NYLT patches, and JLTC patches before it, being worn above the pocket. I had several scouts ticked off at me when I told them it was in the wrong place and I gave them the choice of removing it or leaving it on and losing points in the uniform inspection. All of them challenged me on it and I showed them the IG info. Some took it off, and some left it on. Had one SM very ticked off at me for taking points off the uniform inspection over that issue and another, until I showed him the IG. He's now my boss since he's the District commish What's interesting is that I told the folks running the program during the course they were wearing the patch in the wrong place and telling participants the wrong place to put it, showing them the IG. They said they didn't care becasue they were goign to wear ti there anyway.

My EBOR was a unit one with 3 unit MCs and 2 district folks, the DAC and the former DAC, who actually signed off on my project 4 years prior. Thank goodness the former DAC was on the EBOR as the new DAC was quite upset that I didn't have his approval on any of my paperwork and wanted to refuse the Eagle as a result.

Does anyone remember the Cub Scout who had the spork, you know the spoon with fork tines that has a cutting tine, that was suspended when he brought it to school? Or the girl who was suspended b/c she brought a paring knife in her lunch box for the fruit she was going to eat? Or the Scout who went camping and left a sheathed hand axe in the trunk of his car after a weekend of camping and was suspended? Or, if I remember correctly, the Army reservist who came back from weekend drill and had a Ka Bar attached to his gear which was in the trunk of his car and was suspended? Doesn't matter if you brandish a knife or not, if a teacher suspects you have a knife on property, they can investigate, even if it's in a locked personal vehicle out of site, and folks have been suspended.

SP, I got another similar one. Local college has a PhD staffer in their education department who not only home schools his own kids, but is big on the state level home school association.

Here's my perspective as I use to be in that category. Scouting is my addiction and has been for a very long time. I've been registered for 30 year now. Initially being in the 18-23yo range, no problems with my troop. District and council level had some challenges with adults not taking me seriously. But b/c of continuing involvement, no problems. When I quit being a DE, and moved to work for national supply, I initially had some mistrust with the unit. Here's a guy who just showed up on your doorstep and they did want to know me a little better and see what I had to offer. It also helped that I was married. It all worked out very well eventually. Ditto the expereince above the next troop I joined.And that went very well. The key is that you gotta talk and get to know folks. -
I hate to say this, but I'm willing to bet for every study that says mixed gender is best, you will find a study saying that single-gender is best. Now I admit I'm biased towards single gender school as I went to an all male Catholic HS. I know I did better there than some of my peers who went to the public HSs. BUT there were not many of them as almost every parent who could get their kid into a private school did so, including those parents who worked for the public school system like my mom, and one girlfriend I had whose parents were principles.

OK the unofficial official UNIFORM POLICEMAN IS NOW IN! As others have mentioned, ANY CSP can be worn by ANY member of the council. The scout's family participated in FOS, so I have no problem with him with it. Never heard of such a thing as "commemorative" CSPs not for uniform wear. Either it's a CSP and can be work on the shoulder, ot it's a Temp Patch for the right pocket(or for all CS leaders [both male and female] and female Venturing leaders [but not female Venturers FWIW] above the right pocket). All patches can be worn. Now I would look askew with someone with a JSP that they did not attend, or a under 18YO yute, Venturing Yutes 18-20 are OK, wearing a WB CSP, etc.

I refused to sell anything without trying it out when I worked for supply. So I tried the original Badge Magic, the stuff in an aerosal can. IT WAS HORRIBLE! Never again will I use anything but needle and thread, pins, or staples. As for hints, I've seen staples used to hold it in place and also pins. True story, I had to wear a uniform at the HS I went to that included a patch. For the last 6 months of HS, my patch was stapled on.

There are a lot of inconsistencies withing the BSA's literature. Trust me, I use to work for BSA and was scratching my head at times. As for disagreeing with BSA's policies and procedures, some of us now complaining DID hold our tongues when stupid rules had come out originally, and we have seen them multiply 10 fold. In my case the straw that broke the camel's back was the new rules on ages and tools. Kinda sad when a bunch of Bears laugh at you when you tell them they can no longer use their little red wagons for a service project. Yes they thought it was a joke and I didn't have the heart to tell them otherwise. Now I did tell the parents, and when they realized I wasn't joking all said the same thing, "ARE YOUR SERIOUS?" ( caps to express sock and disbelief by parents.)

JP, Yes they are. They are using laws for companies that some non-profits use like Habitat for Humanity and adopting them. If we follow ALL of those rules, No one could cook over an open fire until age 16, but I see no restriction on building them still, no door to door sales, i.e. no more TRAILS END POPCORN, etc. What the folks at national are forgetting is that A) these are companies that cannot hire kids in the ages we deal with B) Habitat et al are dealing with older teens and are not the wide age frame the BSA is (5.5 is the youngest Cub I met all the way up to 21), C) we are an educational program where youth are suppose to do new and challenging things, and D) Some of the things that are prohibited are things that were commonly done in childhood 10-20 years back an more, i.e. I used a lawnmower to cut grass as a fundraiser to go to jambo at 14 and 15, whear as national now prohibits folks from using a lawnmower until age 16. -
In regards to docs and forms, in my neck of the woods, it is SOP at the offices I'm familiar with that if you drop off the form after a physical they charge you a fee and it can take 1-2 weeks for them to fill out. I'm out in the boonies, we have a physician shortage, and that's SOP because they do get so many. Now this may be just my physician, but the last 2 times I went for the annual physical, because the paperwork was involved, it was coded as if it was an activity-related physical with forms filled out and not an annual physical. So my insurance wouldn't pay initially and I had to bug the heck out of physicians office to get it recoded. Helps to know coders who can give you the exact ICD-9 or ICD-10 code ( sorry don't remember which one it was) that is used for medical records and billing. But from what I'm hearing in regards to medical records, coding, billing, etc,I have a feeling that this will start becoming more and more of the norm. Medicare/Medicaid is getting really anal retentive on this stuff, and the insurance companies are following suit. Give you a hypothetical on some of the issues. Say a medical case involved XYZ disease and ABC procedure on the right lower arm. If the doctor's records code it as a 123.092 XYZ disease and ABC procedure on the right lower arm but the hospital's records say123.09 XYZ disease and ABC procedure on the right l23.09 XYZ disease and ABC procedure on the right lower arm, because neither the hospital nor the physician will get paid. AND if they did get paid, not only will they have to pay it pack, they will also have to pay a penalty for accepting the money in the first place. One reason I'm assuming why many physicians are selling their practices to hospitals.

In regards to " Activity Uniforms" ( ok gonna be the smart alecky Uniform Police ) I hope that A) everyone has the same one and B) they have a big old Boy Scout, Sea Scout, Cub Scout, or Venturing logo on the shirt. I know of one unit that switched shirt designs and colors, and about 1/3 of the unit still has the old shirts. And my troop growing up had a new shirt every single year. PLC picked the color shirt, used the same logo, just added a year underneath the logo.

Base, I admit I can see SP's pov on holding the higher ranks more accountable. And I agree. You need to keep high standards at all levels, but some factors do play a role in expectation IMHO: rank, age, POR, etc. For example I'd hold a 14yo Tenderfoot more responsible than a 10yo recently crossover Tenderfoot. And I would hold a Star SPL more responsible than a FC PL. As Uncle Ben Parker would say, "with great power comes great responsiblity."

Jgood, Just keep at it. My first official interview went really well, and I do mean really well. Kinda nice when the SE you interviewed with remembers you a year later when you see him, and your find out he called a friend in another council to get your records to interview you. Also gave me some very good advice too in regards to my bosses. I too didn't know why I was not hired, but was told a little about the other applicant during the process. We went through PDL-1 together, and found out that he grew up in the council and knew. He had an 8 year hiatus as he went to college and did 4 years in the Army, so he didn't have some problems that folks who grew up in the council they work have. -
Not a troop, but an OA chapter. We were part of the local Red Cross's emergency plan to set up shelters. Also we ad scouts help after Floyd or Fran in 1998 with issuing cleaning supplies.

Bart, That's the Sri Lankan association's emblem, not their version of the World Crest. Only one version of the WC, but they can be made of different materials. I wore a WC from Canda that had a velvet background, the leaders issued those to use to makeup for not having to earn the WC while we were in the middle of a trip. Also have a woven Croatian WC.

Looking at the chart and and all I can say is WOW. It reminds me of when I was on a JROTC trip to NAB Little Creek and our training program was stopped because they had a Red Flag day. It was in the low 90s and 100% humidity. So instead of doing training we played football and capture the flag to the shock of the folks on base because for us low 90s and 100% humidity was perfect weather to be outside.
