Admitting you have a problem is the First Step. Hi, I'm Eagle92 and I'm a Scouting addict. -
As i said, let the YOUTH talk to the SM about the issue. Question: s this a council event where indivuals sign up for, or units have to sign up for it?
-
Every camp/college is different as every MBC is different. Some MBCs are demanding, others are pushovers. I'ld have the YOUTH talk to the SM and ask why. HIS advancement, HIS resposnibility. It may be that the camp has a rep for being a joke. Eagle92

I have to agree with shortridge on this one. I loved WS as a scout, and I've volunteered to help out with this at summer camp since they needed 2 adults on their "experience". The instructor I worked with was a freaking WS genius, and had high demands for the scouts. Heck I even learned a few things. Still I do need to get a pocket sized SAS Survival Handbook book added to the survival kit

By state mandate in NC, public schools here end in mid June. Grant you my son is homeschooled, so that doesn't play to big a factor, but I 've been told that SCOUTNET will kickout problem b-dates. Not looking to do meetings, but looking to do summer camp and the pack activities. Like I said the kid is chomping at the bit

What to Expect with BALOO Training
Eagle92 replied to Eagle92's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Ok debriefing. I hope the rain and last minute planning of the event caused the 'challneges" I saw. Instructor was prepped for 11 folks and almost 30 showed up. Nothing done outside due to weather. Everyhting was a rehash of what I've been through already, except fo thte 'waterbottle" knot, and that may br alcoal add on. No foil cooking, college cafeteria for us. -
Ok stupid question, but here it goes: what month do you do the recruiting, and how do you handle the grade issues? My kindergartner son is chomping at the bit to be a TC, saying he want to take me camping for my birthday in May. he's visited me at camp and a few cub scout functions, and cannot wait. I told him he had to wait until the school year ended and he was in first grade, especially since he has a sept. b-day. Thanks

Maybe the OA does not have the meaning it used to
Eagle92 replied to gwd-scouter's topic in Order of the Arrow
I think that there are a variety of reason for this issue. One is I think that the emphasis on quantity over quality, i.e. the changes in the election process in the mid- late 90s that allowed troop members to vote for all eligible members, has something to do with it. I remember being eligible at 13, and not getting elected. I remember not getting elected at 14. I got in on the third shot at 15, and that usually was the age on the guys in my troop. Nowadays you got 12 year olds getting elected. While they may meet the requirements, sometimes they do not have the maturity. Then again I you can sink you claws into them and get them to joina ceremony, singing, or dance team, In a few years you get awesome results Another problem is that unlike a troop that meets every week, a chapter meets once per month at most and with 4-6 lodge activities a year depending upon the lodge. When you add in all the other stuff outside of scouting, OA can sometimes play second fiddle. Another problem I've seen is too much adult involvement. I admit I'm guilty of it too, but at least I know I am doing too much and am wokringon getting the chapter youth led. Now if I can only keep my officers from moving out of state and/or going to college I wouldn't be in that situation. It is hard when all your active brotherhood members leave and you are left with brand new Ordeal members. A worse problem I've seen is an inactive chapter. I know that went through the Ordeal, I received no info about the chapter. No introductions, no come eat with us, nothing. it was just me and another person form the troop hanging out. When I did find out when they met, and went ot the meeting, no one was there. I'ld rather have adults doing something to keep the chapter alive, than to have it die. OK enough vent -
Last year I was in a properties committee meeting with the our new Scout Executive when the subject of storage for day camps came up. The new SE says, "what, don't all your camp directors just squirrel stuff away like they do in every other council?" EGADS! Get that man a red jacket! He's one of us! Unless he already has one, or has one of those nifty plaid PEDRO jac shirts! Sounds like you have a SE that you pray to stay a long time. We got one of those now and it's an awesome expereince.

NEED ADVICE ON SPECIAL SITUATION!!!!!
Eagle92 replied to Eagle92's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Thanks again everyone. i had the opprotuntiy to talk briefly to the SM and mentioned this thread I started. he said he would look at it. -
Talk ot a NATIONALLY RUN scout shop, not a council distributorship, and see if they can find some patches from other scout shops for you. We did this all the time when I worked supply.

'579, Actually the Powderhorn badge goes there now. '92

I personally like seeing the sash on an elangomat who is setting the example.

INTERESTING. I've only read part of it, but as a Catholic and a Vigil, i do not see any problems with the OA and Catholicism. I think the person who wrote the article is making much ado about nothing. Especially since he doesn't know exactly what is happening, but only reading a script. As for the ceremony comparisons The Knights of Columbus has similarities to the OA ceremonies, and most frats have them as well. can't speak about frats, but I when I was an active KC, I was 2nd degree.

Our guys made a disappointing choice
Eagle92 replied to gwd-scouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Ok I didn't realize that it was only 3 older scouts. I advise against it. Rule of 4 always in backcountry. Perhaps an adult who knows their place, i.e last in line, mouth shut and following the youth? Since it's been planned I say go with it IF you can get a 4th person. Playing bad cop is needed, especially if you set rules, you need to follow through. Best example I can think of is in the book For God and My Country when Lem has to punish his son for violating the rules. -
Diamond Hitch also works well on camp chairs

Some recognitions International Activity hat " " neckerchief and slide " " patch " " backpatch " " Windbreaker (it's blue the int4ernational logo embroidered directly on it ) " Youth Exchange Patch, This is what replaced the WC

1977, I would not recommend it since he is active in the unit and may be selected. 1992

Om I got a little lost. Older scouts want to go on strenuous hike without adults. Everything planned, prepped and ok. THEN 2 "older" scouts vote against this idea at the last minute. AND you think they won't show up at all. to make matters worse, these two "oler scouts' talk the younger ones into not doing ANY backpacking. See why you are disappointed. First and foremost is that it is a youth run program. So you got to live with the decision. I would however talk to the older scouts to see if they could modify their backpacking trip to the new format. I would use the older scout who want to backpack alone, as well as the younger scouts twho want to backpack and see if they can convince them of the joys of backpacking. Grant you the older scouts may have to sacrifice their adultless trail to monitor and motivate the younger ones, but soemtimes teaching those younger ones is a goo experience. Another factor is How long has this trip been planned and have the details already been worked out and/or paid for. Also did the PLC decide this months ago? If so you may want to say "we made the decision, we got to follow through"
