BDPT, An employee patch would be OK for a council employee, or national employee for thast matter, to wear on a field uniform. But it really sounds as if the OP is a parapro as the parapros I've encountered have done just as he describes. Again Best thing to do hsi talk to his boss. Council committee is for volunteers only, and as far as i know the Program Director patches I've seen are usually locally done for camp staff. There is a ' Council Executive Staff" but if memory serves, that's for commissioned professionals, i.e. FiDs, DFSs, etc.

Religious services on overnight trips
Eagle92 replied to True Believer's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Hal, I know the archbishop in my old archdiocese said no more evening masses. Don't know why he did that, but that became policy. Also I know that in my last diocese, there were no eveningn masses, other than in Spanish, and that is how it is in my current diocese. Then again Catholics are a minority in my neck of the woods; my parish church is so small, the small chapel at my Catholic HS is as big as the entire church, and the main chapel at the HS is 3 times the size of the church and parish offices combined! -
Religious services on overnight trips

True, I hear ya on that. I was fortunate in that my priest said as long as we attended something, anything, at summercamp or very late return home, we were OK. Plus where I came from, you could get home at 2PM, take a shower and a nap for 2-2.5 hours and still have your choice of mass schedules: 5PM, 5:30PM, 6PM, 6:30PM, or 7PM, all within 5 miles of the house. maybe a talk to the local parish priest may help? -
I admit I'm one of the old fogeys who likes wearing the complete uniform to flag lowerings/dinner and the closing cmapfire at summer camp. Yep part of it is thje "that's the way it's been done" but also for me it's a pride thing. In my troop we were proud to wear the uniform, necker and all, at meals b/c it enhanced our visibilty. Also different awards would be given out at that time, and havign the uniforn on, with our distinctive neckers, gave us a good feeling. As for an activity uniform for outdoors, the BSA did that in the 1990s that consisted of khaki shorts and a red polo for Scouts, khaki polo for Varsity, and maroon polo for Venture crews, renamed venture patrols since Venturing came out in '98. It was not a success as some parent's complaing that it was yet another uniform item to buy. Most of the troops I knew of in that period stuch with the field uniform with a troop t-shirt instead of the uniform shirt

Rick, I've been in councils where a ScoutReach parapro was assigned the job of CM and/or SM to 3-5 units. The job entails not only doing the CM/SM job, but also training the parents and/or interested parties to do their respective jobs, i.e. committee mebers, DLs, ASMs etc. The goal was to get the troop going and trained in a 12-18 month period, and then have local adults take over while the parapro moves on to the next unit.

Religious services on overnight trips

How about a non-denominational church service for the troop? In my experiecne that happens at summer camp, including when the camp chaplain is a Catholic priest, and happens at my OA lodge events. I might add that back in the day, one of IH/CORs of a neighoring troop would try to go camping with the troop as much as possible. Although a priest, b/c of the number of non-Catholics in the troop, he always did a non-denominational service. In fact the only time the troop was "required" to attend a service, was the Scout Sunday mass that the church put on. And I do use the 'required" term loosely. -
Mamasita, Unfortunantely it appears as if that may be the case. If the appeal letter did not cover specific challenges by the SM, and the SM is a well known person in the council, then the case is one sided, and if nothign challenges the SM, his word will be taken. Again I strongly recommend a call to the SE to discuss the matter and add additional documentation be forwarded to national

It all depends upon the CO. I know that LDS units typically have only LDS members as their Scouting program integrates their religious program. With the three units I've been with that have been chartered by individual Catholic Churches, we've had a mix of folks in the unit and in adult positions. The only added requirement that one Ctholic CO implemented was that not only did we have to undergo YPT with the BSA, we also had to go through the diocese's version of YP. unfortunately I moved back to NC before I ent through that course. Also the church did their own background check prior to submitting the application to the council. Helps to have the local sheriff as a parisshioner. Also when I was a pro, I worked with several local churches in an attept to start some packs and troops that focused on workign with at-risk youth.

Looks I am responding to you again For CS ages, I would get copies of the PROGRAM HELPS. Unfortunately national has decided to no longer produce them, but national still has this link us with 2008-2009 Program Helps. So ebay Program Helps and get some ideas. If you use the link, you will see that it is organized by grade level and by meeting. #1 resource for Cub leaders, and national has discontinued it fo no Earthly idea. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/CubScouts/Leaders/CubScoutHelps.aspx As for BS age youth, THEY need to do the planning, with your help. For that i recommend Troop Program Features, Vols. 1, 2, & 3. each volume contains 12 months worth of ideas, so theoretically you can do 3 years without repeating. However most units will develope a niche, and they will do that activity more often, expanding the skills learned byt hte ascouts.

If memory serves, you are a PARAPROFESSIONAL, and wear the silver loops and and the paraprofessional POR. Now if you are not considered a parapro, you wear the employee patch and the silver loops, again if memory serves. best bet is to look at your contract and/or talk to your boss for more direction. Good luck in your post.

One possible, and I do stress POSSIBLE, way to get national to approve is to not only have your sone write his side of the story, turning it into a He Said/She Said situation, but also include how the SM is so involved on the district and council level, that is prejuidices the appeals committees in favor of the SM. Good luck

While a scout is trustworthy, I think this is an excellent teaching responsibility for the young scout. I would would discuss the importance of that handbook, after all the HB is the official record that will be used to correct any troop or SCOUTNET records that are incorrect, and go to one person who signed off on a Second Class requirement. I don't think any scout would have a problem with a "trust but verify" approach. Further, I would recommend that the scout make copies of the book as things get signed off, especially immediately after BORs. that way if this situation does occur again, he will have a photocopy to support him. I know I was glad when I had a phtocopy of one rank, as my HB took a dive into the drink while canoeing.

BTW I found some great patches that way: NSJ patches, CSP, Flaps, and some cool POR patches that I would need in the future; Int. rep and DE, among others.

As Obi-wan Kenobi, "trust your feelings Luke." while Scouting is the greatest youth program in the world, if it affects your family, it's not worth it. And trust me, you can get so over involved that your marriage suffers: my wife threatened to divorce me less than 4 months into the marriage b/c of scouting. but that's a different story for another day

Short, It's all location location location. Where I grew up, experienced uniforms coul be easily found in the thrift stores. in fact one store had a scout rack! being the entrepreneur that I am, I would buy the shirts, a lot harder to find pants, take the patches off and add them to my collection, and then sell the shirt to the guys in my troop. Enough to cover the cost of the shirt, and a coke was goal. However where I am at now, you cannot find anything scouting related at any of the thrift stores.
-
My troop also was stricter in uniforming than the posters's troop. Now we did allow black socks with the pants only for our weekly troop inspections, and we also allowed any green pants or shorts for out weekly inspections. We also had a uniform box to help out as well. As someone else mentioned, you have to have that uniforming culture in a unit, and have the youth buy into it and enforce the rules. It was expecetd that we wore the uniform of the season: field uniform with necker, troop woggle and troop totem october -may, activity uniform of any troop or scout t-shirt with scout shorts/pants, belts socks, etc. And we wore the feild uniforms to and from campouts. No uniform, no trip EXCEPT the new guys of course. To show how we were, we had bandsmen, football players, baseball players, etc comign directly from practices and games with their unifomr on a hanger to change into once they arrived at meetings.

If the SPL and and ASPL are not doing their jobs, then by all means step up to the plate. Follow the plans made at the yearly planning session, keep the troop following the PLC's monthly program, and keep the troop youth run. Then when either of them come back, be prepared to step down. But keep the troop youth led!

What to do? Well welcome him back with open arms and help him earn, not give him, his Eagle. Unlike Sea Scouts where attendance percentages still apply to advancement, national states all he needs to do to be active is pay his registration fee, not be kicked out, and keep in touch. And he's down that. As long as the other requirements: POR, MBS, etc are met, he's good to go once the project is completed. Little story about an eagle i know in a similar situation. the scout could have gotten Eagle by the time he was 14 if only he had completed his MBs. Yep this guy had his 6 months POR in, and even did the Service Project within 4 months of earning Life, just needed some MBs. He had fun and was active for two years, but couldn't make the trips b/c of HS activities. Then starting at 16, he came on and off to meetings b/c of a job he took to support himself as his mom was a single parent, and also HS activities. He got his last MB done 5 days before 18th birthday, and did earn Eagle. That Eagle stayed in his hometown to go to college, and with the flexibility he now had with his PT jobs and school(he was a workaholic: 2 PT jobs totaling 40-45 hours a week and a FT load at college), he remained with the troop as an ASM and his attendance increased drastically. he was the type of inspiration you want a young leader to be for the scouts in the troop, and when it came time for him to move on, the youth organized a going away party for him. So maybe, just maybe you got another eagle like me on your hands. Once I was able to, I remained very active not only with that troop, but also with the OA and summer cmap.

Glad your son had a great time. I know there were some reservations when my ld concil did JLT as htey hadn't had one in 6 years, and I was the only person on staff that went through the last course. However all the other adults had attended or staffed WB, plus a few scouts went to Philmont for the staff course they offer. So I bet you son's course had WBers and possibly some youth who did the same thing. Again glad to hear your son had a great time.

that's not an iron on backing, that's, for lack of a better word, adhesive that prevents the patch from fraying. If you iron it on, it will come off in the wash.

SctLdr, I would hate for a scout to be sent home b/c of a medical from problem or have to pay for a physcial out of pocket at a local clinic that the camp made prior arrangements with. Yes I've seen both happen.
-
yes it's very easy to verify is someone is a licensed physician. PM me with the state, and I'll get the link for you. Legibility is critical, so if it's illegible, get her to fill it out online. Ansd eys if the socut has a complex med. history, talk to ehr asap to insure the proper attention if needed.

Emb, Part of the complaining from CS leaders I'm with, and I admit I've done my share too with them and online, is that national provided info in Aug or Sept. 2008 to the fact that if in khaki, specificaly the centennial uniform, then you wear the green numbers and trained patch irregardless of if you are a CS, BS, or a leader in either program. Then in April 2009, seven to eight months later, first national said CS and their leaders wear a khaki and red number with the centennial uniform, that was one a pdf file on their site with a pic of the number, and then later in the same month CS and CS leaders in khaki are to wear the red and whites. BUT national in some literature still shows CS wearing the green numbers. With national changing things as often as they have done, people who have spent a good edeal of money trying to set the example for the youth they lead are upset. Now in reference to the red loops, some of the griping I am getting is that you have a hodge podge of green and red loops within troops, and it is affecting the uniformity. In my neck of the woods, uniforming is a very big deal, and some SMs do not like the disorganized of having some wear red and some wear green. So with one unit, they found it easier, and cheaper too, to make their own red loops. It save money, presents an organized appearance, and that unit is readily identifiable froma distance at events. Also there have been numerous reasons posted as to why the color change occured, but no clear reason from national. I've heard that they wanted a more subdued look for the outdoors, they didn't want to be affiliated with a particular political party that uses red for identification, and that national originally made a mistake in 1979 in the color loops for programs, and they are now getting around to fixing the problem. Me personally I have enough uniforms to last me a very long time, including venturing stuff. Although I do plan on getting a new venturing web belt. Want to save the new leather belt for meetings and ceremonies

Is anyone else having to keep logging on everytime you try to look at something on SC? Also is anyone else having challenges posting there, b/c they keep asking you to log on? I am involved in a discussion over there with BW and SC keeps asking me to log on and will not let me post.
