My advice si get all the training when you can, otherwise things may happen that delay you from getting it. I had the ounce og going through WB at Gillwell to go to WSJ, I chose WSJ. A few years later, I had a choice to go through WB, or attend a distant relative's wedding. I should have chose WB, but I didn't, and I do regret it as it was the old course. I was contemplating the upcoming WB, but was asked to take a volunteer job that will require me to go to NCS, so WB is put off yet again. So if you can take WB, take it. As for other training, RT are good IF you have a good RT staff. UoS is also a good choice.

Growing up, my troop had a uniform policy to and from events. At summer camp we also wore our troop neckers and totems (necklaces that showed various acheivements within the troop). Only one time in my 12 years with that troop as a youth and adult did we not wear full uniform home, and that was when there was a minor canoeing accident. Those of us who took care of the problem went home in swim trunks, troop t-shirts, and towels Also the SM and other adultsdidn't enforce the uniform rules, the PLC did. Only time an adult ever made comments on uniforming was usually a new leader who just moved up form the youth ranks, and then he was reminded it's not his job anymore Today, I and my son both travel in full uniform to and from events. PAck is a new pack and doesn't have that uniforming culture, yet at least

"Wish-I-had" this when I took wood badge:

For the weeklong course, talcum powder. -
In the UK, the camps I worked at offered ala cart programing, i.e. base price is X, rifle shooting is Y, kayaking is Z, clibing is J, etc. Some troops did break downinto patrols. Maybe it's something to look at here?

I second the smaller pateches! Make smaller council strips, or better yet make them simple strips like the old Community strips. Go bacl to the old school POR patches with no wording and different color backgrounds to denote POR, i.e two bars for PL, Blue universal emblem for CM, etc. At one time NSJ and WSJ were considered temp insignia, so nothing was worn above the BSA strip. Keep rank, OA flaps, and CS Outdoor Award flaps the same size, ok maybe modify them to mathc the new uniform pockets.

Does the new CS belt fit the Sports and Academic belt loops?

Not trying to make you feel bad, just trying to get you ready for your EBOR, and hoepfully your ECOH As for sewing, trust me it's easy. hardest part is getting the thread into the needle, and use a threader for that. Now beadwork is a different story As for being unique and standing out, I can understand that. Heck I'm the one who has a Sea Scout uniform that looks for every opportunity to wear it. BUT once you get that Eagle, you will be unique, you will be a 2%er who made it to the top. PLUS you got arrowhead patch with the Tooth of Time on it, one that I literally drool over. trust me people will notice you, especially if you live up to the Scout Oath and Law. One of the best compliments I ever received was at CS day camp this past summer. I was one of the few staffers wearigg a uniform, and I also brought along my hiking staff. One of the parents in my pack said to another "If you look up Boy Scout in the dictionary, you'll see a picture of him in it." Moral is be yourself, be active evena fter receiving Eagle, and live up to the Oath and Law, you will be noticed.

National Policy Changing re: Unsupervised Patrol Outings
Eagle92 replied to MarkS's topic in The Patrol Method
Eagle87 said Youth protection is just that. It's not for scouters, it's to protect the scouts. Trust me it's not only for their protection, but adults as well. I know of two instances where a scout lied and accused an adult, because he was ticked off at them correcting him. In the first case, I was with 2 other adults and he was with 3 other youth in the middel of the night. He had the 3 youth going along with him at first and accsuing us of things, but eventually the other three fessed up that they were lying. Second incident didn't have anyone else around. Leader going to the latine in the middle of the night caught the same "scout" doing some stuff. When she corrected him and tried to send him back to the tent, he made a ruckus, accused her of inappropriateness, and she was gone from scouting. Unfortunately that "scout" went on to "earn" Eagle, while the movement lost a very talented and dedicated leader over someone's dishonesty. -
Yep the belt is nice, I have a HIGH ADVENTURE one that I wear on occasion, but at important event like an EBOR, I'ld wear the standard belt,or a leather one. As for looking important, it's not how you look, but how you act that gets attention. I've seen some folks all decked out with all kinds of faldercarb, most of it not regulation. The only time I've worn non reg items was 1) My troop totem as it was a troop item and everyone was given one when they joined the troop and told to wear it in full uniform, and #2 my summer cmap staff domino, only to be worn while working summer camp or visiting the camp AND willing to do some work. A clean uniform with everything your entitled to wear makes a bigger impact than adding stuff to the uniform

I like the old knee highs b/c you could wear them with shorts and your legs would still be protected. the new green socks are very nice. they have extra padding so they are comfortable for hiking. Wish they made them in knee high length. The new hiking uniform socks are good, but the BSA logo in on the foot where you cannot see them AND comes off after a few washes.

Short gave you good advice, talk to the SM. Every troop, district and council has different ways of doign things. I'm an use to EBORs being very formal, you wear full uniform: sash, medals, etc. However in one district sashes and medals weren't worn. My $.02 worth. In reference to the MB sash, start sewing! If you don't need it for the EBOR, you will want to wear it at the ECOH once approved As for the Philmont patch, HECK YEAH!, wish I had one to wear, I now have three excuses to get one. As for the Philmont cloth belt, I hate to say it, but I would do without it and wear the regular belt. As for shoes, "Leather or canvas, neat and clean." However I'ld ditch the tennis shoes for dress shoes or clean and polished boots. As for pins, they aren't on the uniform inspection sheet, so get rid of them. The Scout Sign one is definitely not meant for uniform wear, but as a tie tac or lapel pin on coats and tie. The FOS pin sounds like that also, but it may be a local award. Best thing to do is look at the uniform inspection sheet found here: http://scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/images/pdfs/34283.pdf And the Insignia Guide here http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Media/InsigniaGuide.aspx Good luck on your EBOR!

If your eagle is interested in a military career, contact you local recruiting office, they can get you a nice plaque. Marine Corps League is also a nice certificate. if he's earned his religious award, that committee that council committee may have a certificate (I had 2 reps from the committee at mine, both good friends too). Also if there are any local celebrities that are Eagles, contact them. I had Jim Mora, then head coach of the Saints, write me a letter.

Good question, probably b/c the founding fathers of the BSA didn't include youth on the committees that created the BSA. In reference to OA, Venturing, and Sea Scouts, if memory serves those positions were first internal positions, that later expanded onto district, council, regional, and national levels.

Combining a trip to DC with a Pack/Troop camp?
Eagle92 replied to mdlscouting's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Last time I went to DC with scouts, we stayed in dorms at one of the universities, sorry cannot tell you. We were there for 3 days of sightseeing, then jambo. We walked all three days, to the usual tourist spots, and wound up getting three tail medals. Another possibility is if there is a Historic Naval Ship in the area that does overniters. When I worked the KIDD in Baton Rouge, we had several groups use us as a hostel during their stay in BR. -
Promoting high adventure with a young troop
Eagle92 replied to Buffalo Skipper's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Lots of good advice. I especially like the one where you start preparing for high adventure when the Webelos join the troop. However I would expand that. I say you start talking up the HA activities as soon as their Tigers Seriously my pack has me whose been toa NSJ, WSJ, 3 fifty milers, and the European Camp Staff Program, as well as anotehr DL whose done Philmont 3 times. Both of us actively talk abut our experiences amongst all the cubs in the pack, saying how yes we are havign fun now, but just wait until you're a boy scout. With the parents I've met at the summer time activities, CSDC, and the family camp outs, I not only talk about the adventures I've been on, but alos start mentioning the patrol method and how a great troop is boy run and organized chaos One thing I've done and have done at OA meetings is to have someone who has 'been there, done that" besides the regulars. I'm fortunate in that I am friends with one of the guys who started OA Trail Crew and he's done promos not only on OATC, but also Philmont and Arrowcorp5 -
How to drop a boy from our roster....
Eagle92 replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
With the one that moved, did you fill out transfer paperwork for him to take to his new unit? As for removing youth form the charter, the council will probably not remove them until recharter time unless the one that moved pays the $1 transfer fee and his records get switched, and you have no control over that. I know that in my neck of the woods during round ups, we would get all comers trying to ge thte cool gimme the council gave out. Once they got the gimme, after paying the fees, you never saw them again. had several troop try to remove them, and the DFS said we couldn't until charter renewal 'casue they paid their fees. -
Only if you are into SCA, reenacting, or have a CS theme that includes swords, should a sword be worn. Sorry I couldn't resist. In all seriousness I do hope the 2010 Jambo will be awesome.

As for Camp Bonner, it's history and what it has to offer, check out the website http://www.campbonner.org/ especially the photos 'cause we all know 'a picture is worth a 1000 words" http://www.campbonner.org/photos.html The camp has been around for 40 years. Facilities include 2 showerhouses, dining hall, pool, C.O.P.E. course, year round nature lodge, and riverfront property. they offer a multitude or programs. one great feature is location of the nationaly certified Pamlico Sea Base, within walking distance from Camp Bonner. That way your older scouts and venturers who are tired of the same old same old of summer camp ("I don't need to work on any more MBs")can challenge themselves with one of several different high adventure activities. check out their website also http://www.pamlicoseabase.org/

Herbert C Bonner was a congressmen that donated several large tracts of land to several youth organizations for use as camping facilties. The land was outside Washington, NC. Across the river from that site, the council also obtained land, and together both properties were known as the Herbert C. Bonner Scout Reservation, with the summer camp being "unoffically" called Camp Bonner, and the northern property called "Camp Bonner North" and is primitive camping today. I say unofficially b/c according to the council's property committee, the summer camp was never offically named, despite merchandise to the contrary. Yes I have mixed emotions on this. I worked one entire summer there, plus countless first offical CS camp out (we were invited to a family campout with the pack we eventually joined in April). So there is some emotional baggage there. Also from promotional aspect, Camp Bonner does have a reputation as a great camp, which I and other staff members have worked hard in the past and today to create. Don't want to see people not come b/c they don't realize that Boddie is the same camp as Bonner. BUT on anotehr note, I do knwo how much the Boddies have helped not only Camp Bonner, but all of the council camps as well as council programing. They are phenominal and are worthy of permanent recognition. I just think they are being shortchanged; I think the entire reservation should have been renamed Boddie Scout Reservation, keepign the Camp Bonner name.
-
It's pronounced body. Yep Camp Bonner is gonna be heard for a very long time. My old council sold camp Salmen to get a 1600 acre reservation that was not being encroached by Slidell, LA. While the reservation is call Salmen Scout Reservation, the summer camp is Camp V-Bar. But you still have folks 30+ years after Camp Salmen closed, calling Camp V-Bar, Salmen. Also while I accidentally slip with 'venture crews," I think the leather belt with "Camp Bonner," my "Bonner Scout Reservation" staff cap (yep I putting my smokey away whenever I go Camp Bonner), and my son's Camp Bonner cap all show how I feel. It's not that I am trying to disrespect the family 'cause they are awesome, but I think the reservation should have been called Boddie Scout Reservation with Camp Bonner and the Pamilico Sea Base instead of East Carolina Council Reservation with Camp Boddie and the PSB.
-
Actually when the dining dining hall burned down in 1995, the Boddies did cater for summer camp . Yep the council is renaming the camp for them. I have to admit, they do a heck of a lot for the council, both publicly and privately. It's been stated on the Facebook's Camp Bonner NAme Preservation group that they should haev changed the reservation's name to Boddie Scout Reservation, keeping the summer camp as Camp Bonner. I liek that idea, but no one ever listens to me.
-
Just a heads up as I know Camp Bonner in Blount's Creek, NC has a great reputation. Effective January 1st, the camp will be "officially named" Camp Boddie, pronounced "body." According to the first PDof Camp Bonner and current council president, Camp Bonner was never officially named Camp Bonner. The council executive committee has therefore decided to "name" the camp "Camp Boddie." Again just a heads up that Camp Bonner will be Camp Boddie. same great camp, same great staff, just a new name. And if you continue to call it Camp Bonner, I know alot of folks who won't be upset

In reference to the OP, STAFF is what makes a good summer camp. They are the ones that run program, they are the ones that teach and set the example. And it starts from the top with the CD and PD, so that is #2 factor.. I did two summers at the same camp. The first summer, the CD was awesome, coming up through the ranks, leaving and coming back. he motivated and "molded" the staff. The PD was the same way and was awesome. Only problem was that the CD got a promotion and left to go out west. Although he didn't try and recruit folks, the PD did want to follow him and did. Sop the next summer, the CD was in it just to get a bonus. PD was a one year staffer, who was good the first year as a follower, but couldn't lead, mentor, and mold the staff. It got so bad the DSS sent in another DE to make sure "the staff don't kill [the CD]." No in reference to my beloved Camp Bonner, the council has decided to rename the camp "Camp Boddie" Same great camp, same great staff, just we are now "officially" getting a name.

Is a troop with 6 active boys too small?
Eagle92 replied to Beavah's topic in Open Discussion - Program
On Brownsea island in 1907, BP formed 4 patrols: Bulls, Wolfs, Ravens, and CURLEWS, with 20 boys. 20 divided by 4 equals 5 man patrols. So yes a 6 man patrol is doable. An aside, the 22 in Brownsea 22 comes from the fact that there were 22 people at that first scout camp: BP, the 20 boys, and his nephew who was too young to participate so he was the mascot. -
CC. According to Scouting 'Round the World the Chinese Scout Association you reference is for the Republic of China, aka Taiwan, not the People's Republic of China, aka Chinese Communists of Tiennamen Square, 1 child per family, and forced abortion fame. Now because of the treaty the ChiComs signed with the UK reverting Hong Kong back to Chinese sovereignty, The Scout Association of Hong Kong is still in existence for next 40 something years. But Scouting is only in Hong Kong and no where else in Communist China.
