  1. EMB, Understood, haven't kept up with all the changes between JLT and NYLT. To my knowledge I haven't seen any national staff patches, buckles, etc for JLT staff, only local stuff like my old council's use of the Smokey Bear.
  2. In my old troop you had to be at least First Class and a PL for six months to run for SPL. SPL had to appoint a ASPL who also met those requirements. As for PL, the individual patrols selected them. Now back then the Leadership Corps was a POR, and to be in it you had to meet the following requirements. 1) Been a PL for 6 months. 2) Be First Class or higher 3) Be elected into the LC by the current members. We used the LC as just that, a corps of older scouts who had the KSAs to provide troop level leadership, i.e. quatermaster, scribe, instructor, etc. They worked with the other patrols in the troop, but at times did their own thing. One example, and the best trip for me with the LC, was the Vicksburg Military Park. I transfered into the troop from another, and had done the 14 mile trek with my old troop. The new troop hadn't been there in a while, only the LC members had been that trek before before. So they decided to do teh 12 mile cross coutnry trek, and I got to go with them. I must have made a good impression, b/c as soon as my term of office as PL was over, iw as elected into the LC, and I was the youngest member of it!
  3. Mark, Thanks for volunteering your time to staff NYLT, I know how hard that is from staffing JLT back in the day. The problem I have with awarding WB beads for NYLT is that there is no national recognition for the YOUTH and other adults who are staffing the course. Let's face it the youth are putting in just as much time as the adults, sometimes more if you include the youth going to Philmont for the staffer training in addition to them attending their original NYLT, and all the staff trainings. And let's not forget the other adults who are takign the time to staff the event juts like you are. They have to go through all the staff weekends just like the WB folks. Some of those adults are college students who have been through the program as a youth and want to give back, but don't have the money or time to do WB at that stage of their lives. 4. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the BSA have a recognition already for those overachievers who earn more than the required MBs for Eagle? I thought that was what the Bronze, Gold, and Silver Eagle Palms were for?
  5. I remember as a scout that the only time the PL, SPL, or SM got involved in scheduling, was IF a scout didn't qualify for a class, i.e. didn't pass the swim test for Swimming MB and Canoeing Also the only "strongly recommended' MB we were advised to take was First Aid as it was required for First Class (and from my experiences it should eb again, differnt story for a different day). we were also advised to haev a least one free period, to have fun and work on projects as needed. Grant you I took a bunch of Eagle required MBs at summer camp: First Aid, Swimming, Camping (had to have alot of work done in advance), Emergency Preparedness, etc, but I also took a few fun ones: Wilderness Survial, Indian Lore, Pottery, Canoeing etc. But with the exception of the High Adventure program I did one year, I always had a free period to relax and goof off.
  6. Depending upon how your local council handles things, either they will be able to sell you one, with evidence of membership (usually the membership card) or tyou will have to go throught he lodge. My council has everything OA related goignt hrough the lodge.
  7. Nike, May I modify your statement? No Scout should be denied the opportunity to be an Arrowman simply because a group of YOUTH ARROWMEN (caps to emphasis change to original quote, not yelling) can't wrap their collective heads around the logistics. Sometimes you have to think outside the box. Sometimes ideas from other areas will work. The reverser is also true, ideas from other areas may not work. As an adult, our job is to counsel and advise. Let the youth comeup with solutions, you may be surprised.
  8. Good question. I have to disagree with you on the usefullness of a chapter in such a large territory. I think it's worth it. You can still have a viable chapter, you just have to be creative and work a little harder. A few ideas. 1) Hold chapter meetings at lodge functions, i.e. Ordeals, Wordk days etc. Nowhere does it say you have to have amonthl7y meeting. 2)Hold a meeting at district and council events like camporee or MBUs. If peopel wil be there already, just ask the organizers for some time. 3) Do schedule some day activities; visit a museum, canoeing, etc, or even a weekend fellowship. 4) make sure you have some chapter socials if you cannot hold a full fledge meeting at a district/council event. 5) STAFF CS events. best recruiting tool I've seen not only for Scouting but also the OA was ceremony teams and workers at CS events. As for election teams. I bet that you can have troops that Buddy UP to do the electiosn that are close by. Good Luck.
  9. Forgot to add that Tenderfoots and Second Class scouts signing of on skills they taught had to be approved before hand by the SM.
  10. In my old troop growing up, Any scout First Class of above could sign of for T-2-1 requirement. A few exceptions would be those Scouts Tenderfoot or Second Class who were working on MBs that required you to teach certain T-2-1 skills, like First Aid. Grant you this was in the "Dark Ages," when youth still sat on BORs .(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  11. OOOH tough question. On my uniform I would say 1)my Eagle Knot as I barely earned barely, 2)my OA Flap (which has a Vigil border on it) as I was honored by my troop to be nominated, and later nominated by my old lodge to be Vigil, and 3)WSJ patch as it took me two years to save up for the troop that included the WSJ. If I was setting up a display it would be the following 1) Original Eagle patch 2) My second troop's patch. thatw as the troop I spent 6/7 years in scouting in, got my Eagle in, first served as an ASM, and have too many memories to not include it. Heck It is rigt in fron of me as I am typing. 3)My European Camp Staff Programme patch.Spent 11 weeks as part of the program and spent 2 years saving the money to do it and 95 WSJ. 12. SM's primary responsibility is to see that his junior leaders are trained. Now to answer your question, it depends? In some units the youth leaders are thoroughly trained and do teach their peers. Saw this in my troop growing up. It was expected that those youth going to the then BA22, now NYLTC, would have the KSAs to teach their peers, and we did. heck as part of one ambitious project, my district conducted a district wide, day long TLT (or whatever it was called back then)with nothing but BA22 grads running it. Sometimes a bit more involvement is needed. I know GBB said the SM should be the PL of the patrol that consisted of troops leaders for a brief period of time until the SPL could take over if memory serves. Training took 6 months. If you have youth that can do it, let them do the training under your guidance. If you need to train them, then do so.
  13. Sometimes distributors are stuck with out of date insignia. Like my local distributor still sells Tiger Cub Coach patches 'cause she has them in stock still. Sometimes you can find treasure.
  14. The Centenary Necker for the 100th Anniversary of Scouting Worldwide also hd a ribbon border. I actually folded the necker, like the older BSHB recommend you do. IT WORKS. difficult, yes, but one person can do it. Also folding the Tiger necker will keep the slide on a hyperactive Tiger Now if only folding would work on my 18th WSJ Clog slide . NO ONE that I know of was able to get that sucker on both sides of a necker. Most people had one on each side, and either tied ii in a knot or used another slide.(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  15. Nick, they'll be here soon enuff. takes a while to get stuff shipped form China. Sherm I hear ya about the 4th corner. I have a few neckers with 4 corners b/c I straight dance. BUT I like three corners b/c #1 a scout is thrifty and it should cut the cost in half, and #2 Symbolic reminder to Do our duty to God and Country, Others and Self.
  16. Stopped by the local distributor on the way home. had to pick up some red and white unit numbers and a new trained strip BUT I order my necker and a few other things while I was there. Also picked up the new catalog. Why did they have to use a dog to advertise the new necker? As for bulk discounts, I'ld talk to your local distriburot or scout shop. national scout shops can sometimes, stress SOMETIMES do it, with approval from national, but your local distributors can usually do it for ya.

  18. THEY BROUGHT BACK THE OLD SIZE NECKERCHIEF!!!!!!!!! http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=CCORNER&C3=BSA2010&C4=&LV=3&item=64038&prodid=64038^8^01RTL& MUST GET!
  19. You're good to go with the leather Philmont belt. Check out the isnpection sheet found here. http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/images/pdfs/34283.pdf
  20. Emb, Everyone in my neck of the woods call it the "smokes pocket." The local distibutor was shocked about it, thinking the BSA was trying to get scouts onto a bad habit. When I told her it was for ipods and showed her the hole for the earphones, she freaked out. I also have seen Venturers wearing the tan and green numbers.

    Noac as a Adult

Nick, I went to a NOAC as a 20yo ASM/ youth Sea Explorer (showing my age here) and as a YOUTH in the OA, remember 20 and under are youths still, there is a ton of stuff for you to do. Even for over 21YOs, there is a ton of stuff to do. You just can't compete. GO TO NOAC...it is useless to resist.
  22. Wife read the article and laughed. said we have to teach our boys the right way. Ok gotta go and plan the next family vacation on the AT.
  23. Count me in the negative. here are my complaints. 1) Smokes pocket on the left sleeve. IF you really needed a smokes pocket, and you don't, at least put it on the right sleeve where a POR emblem doesn't go on top of it. 2) On the long sleeves, the Swiss tabs need top be an inch or more higher 3) BUTTONS on the front pockets, esp. since the current temp patch button is worthless. 4) Needs a BSA strip or direct embroider. the stickers do come off. 5) Ditto the Flag, either direct embroider or patch it. 6) and this one is more instruction oriented than uniform apparel, GIVE CLEAR CONCISE ISNTRUCTIONS, I.E. ISSUE AN INSIGNIA GUIDE AND/OR INSPECTION SHEET TELLING US WHAT COLOR PATCHES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE WORN! Sorry for the caps on 6, but that has irked me. I bought a centennial uniform with the green numbers and trained strip only to find out that first CS leaders wear a tan and red number with red and tan trained strip, then the current wear red and white numbers and a red and tan trained strip. No direction to nationla scout shop employees, no direction to distributors, and no direction to leaders, scouts and parents until 5-6 months AFTER they issue the uniform. And this problem was revisited last nite at my pack's first meeting of the year. the First year Webelos and some new leaders didn't know what patches ot get. PLUS you got the 2nd year Webelos wearing the tan and greens b/c that is what they were told last year when they got their uniforms. LOTS of complaints by parents and leaders after the meeting!
  24. And to paraphrase Obi-wan Kenobi, whose the more foolish the fool or the fool that argues with him? I smell troll, or at the minimum someone who doesn't live up tot the Oath and Law, and we should just ignore him.
