In referecne to Den Chief's and their term of office. DCs are unique in that usually they are a DC for the entire year of the pack, since they are primarily working with a pack. So if the pack starts in Sept., they should start in Sept. If the pack ends in may, then they end in May. That's becasue there is a big differnce between the 1 or 2 week break in meetings becasue of Christmas or spring break that a troop will have and a three month summer break a pack will have. So having the SPL appoint DCs mid year isn't really recommended. That said, I have to agree with the others, if the pack year ended in May, he still needs 2 months. If the pack did activities over the summer and he attended, then he did meet the requirement. If however they did, and he didn't attend, then he still needs 2 months, or however manymonths he didn't work over the summer.

Beavah, I hear you. Unfortunately both sides of the aisle are guilty of that behavior, as those same words have been uttered during the previous adminstartion. We may be turing into the House of Commons, but at least it isn't as bad as the 1850s when one representative struck another with his cane.

YES THANK YOU! i'm also onthe committee, and I'm helping with the second FamCamp, the one SctDad won't be at. So this is VERY beneficial to both of us.

Sctdad, Reason folks get defensive about the Shooting Sports topic is b/c 1)it is a restricted activitiy and 2) most people who ask for info are doing so in order to violate G2SS and conduct pack events, which can be a safety issue. Most of the time people who are running events like ours have either been A) trained and/or B) doing it for years, so they already have the info. Let's face it our council is a little behind on the famcamps planning. Luckily we got a great group who are putting things together this year, and I don't know about you, But I am already getting ideas for next year.

I got 2 questions. 1) Did the troop do any summertime activities, i.e. pool party, sakte nite, etc, or promote district/council activities, i.e. family camp, resident camp, or day camp? 2) Did he work in a leadership role in any of these activities IF they did occur? I ask these b/c I know that some packs do remain active over the summer. And if they do things over the summer and he continues in his role as DC, then the requirements are met. As it is described now, he's only got 4 months in as his duties ended in may. Doesn't matter how hard he worked, it matters that the requirement was not met. Again did the pack do things over the summer?

SctDad, Our SE is 110% better than the one I worked under, so the council is in good hands. heck my SY wanted to first harvest Camp Charles, then sell it. Also i beleive our DEs are much better off and don't have as much pressure, or other monkeys hanging on their backs.

Ok folks, somewhere on SCOUTER.COM, or maybe MYSCOUTING.ORG, there was talk about an alternate uniform being tested in MD. Here is a link i found wiht more info. http://ideas.scouting.org/akira/dtd/21150-2119 It has a link to a pdf fiel witht he proposed uniform I see MAJOR problems of affordability. $59.99 for a shirt. $54.99 for shorts $14.99 for socks $19.99 for a t-shirt. Maybe I am just cheap, but I have a real problem affording a uniform this expensive.

Emb, I have to respectfully disagree withthe comment that National published info. Or to be more specific the constant changing of information, specifically CS and CS leaders. One example is the numbers. First it was tan and green, then tan and red (for about 2 weeks in April) and now red and white. AND some publciations still have wrong info, i.e. the new catalog on pg.14 with the Webelos and green numbers.

Is the political party system detrimental to the country?
Eagle92 replied to scoutldr's topic in Issues & Politics
VOL. FYI dependign upon the state you are in, determines whether it's a caucus, closed primary, or open primary. I personally loved the open primary that LA has, because you could vote for the best person,or if you are in the situation I am in NC, you can actually vote for the person to represent you in the state legislature. there have been no candidates for state rep in my party, and I cannot vote for the challenger to the incumbant as they are not in my party. -
And the Alternative is ... ... ... Lacking?
Eagle92 replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Issues & Politics
Did a quick search, and this may have your answer. Don't have time ot read it at the moment http://www.gop.com/2008Platform/HealthCare.htm -
It depends upon the council. In the council I grew up in and first served as an adult in, teh volunteers did the programing. Pros were there for support. Motto was, "if it aint broke, don't try and fix it." So the volunteers organized 99.999% of the program activities. And that is how it is suppsoe to be. However that wasn't in the case in the council I became a DE in. DEs were expected to run everything and be at all activities in their district. DEs were expected to recruit, plan, and execute the event with Vols basically staffing it. Heck I got into trouble one year as I was only at CSDC for a few hours on the first day to drop off supplies and handle any last minute problems. I was told by my DFS that I was suppose to be there the entire week and that I should have scheduled things accordingly. Yet when I pointed I was not at CSDC the year before due to working summer camp, I was told that was no excuse. The key to scouting is the VOLUNTEERS. They need to plan far enough in advance to advertise it and make it successful. As my old MSgt. would say, "The 5 Ps: Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performances...."

Keeping Older Scouts Interested in Troop Meetings
Eagle92 replied to kenk's topic in Open Discussion - Program
From my experiences as an older Scout/ young Scouter 1) you've got to instill the importance of teaching those skills to the younger guys. Also you need to spread the teachign responibility around, having the same scouts do it over and over does bore them. 2) You've got to get them to come up with their own program. They know what they want to do. 3) As with ANY patrol, the venture patrol can do patrol activities without adult supervision. 4) get these guys into PORs that pu thtem on the PLC. I know the new HB states that Instructors, QM, et al are not partof the PLC. BUT 1) they are troop leaders 2)gives them more input into what to do, thus buy in, and 3)doesn't give them an excuse that the program is borig as THEY are part of the programing process. 5) Look for ways to have the VP do their own thing on troop outings. -
Also remember that you can custom order patches via national and others. had to do that for the White Tiger Patrol

Attending Troop meetings AND still working on AOL
Eagle92 replied to SctDad's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I have heard of a troop that welcomed Webelos IIs to their meetings so that the scouts and parents get comfortable with the troop. But they were NOT registered with the troop. Once you cross over, yuo are done with CS. Belay that, You may have the formal AOL/Crossover ceremony. I know that some units will have the Webelos II fill out the paperwork, a requirement for AOL, and then a week or two later at the pack Meeting crossover. -
And that was the professional side. Don't ask what the volunteers thought! I will give you a hint, a volunteer got a case of champaign, threw a party, and got a bunch of UCs registered, basically folks who sid no more to scouting until the SE left.

Chai, The hole is not at the bottom of the pocket, but at the top. So it won't drain. Also the CSE called it an "Ipod Pocket." As for me I use it for my compass and rain cover.

Welcome to the boards. Must concur 9/10 you buy cheaper, you get inferior product. HOWEVER, my troop also allowed similar pants, and the ones used were military grade pants, pre-BDUs if memory serves. Good quality, very similar in color, and about 2/3 the cost. As fo rthe parent, tell them to have their son carry the uniform inthe car and htey can a) change in the car, B) change in a bathroom at the field or C)Change in the bathroom at the meeting. been there, done that, adn my troop met on FRIDAYS! Heck I remember moving a ECOH to saturday, just happened to be my ring dance nite, So I go from ring dacne ceremony in coat and tie with my date, to ECOH changing into full uniform once I go there, to changin back into coat and tie fo rthe ring dacne once the ECOH was done. No Sympathy.

In my situation, it was the SE and DFS. Let's face it when a family member calls in to say that a professional won't be able to attend a meeting b/c he's in the ER b/c of an accident, and the DFS doesn't care, he wants him in the meeting in 45 minutes. There's a problem. When a FiD gets a project dumped on him with about 6 weeks to plan and execute, and then the SE wonders why it wasn't successful, there is a problem. When A DE who had surgery, and is suppose to be on "light duties" fro several weeks is told by the DFS that he MUST sleep overnite at a district event about 4-5 days after surgery, there is a problem. When the DFS cancels training 2 days before the pro is suppose to leave, and tells hhim not only is he not going to training, but he has to cut the honeymoon short to attend a meeting AND work summer camp the week after the wedding, there is a problem. Longest 1 pro worked under the SE and DFS was 5 years, and he was still there when they left. The shortest was 28 days, the guy in the ER called the office and tendered his resignation over the phone. One good friend of mine who got all kinds of stuff dumped on him last minute returned the favor. When there was no FD above him amd he was reporting directly to the DFS, he told them that he quit effective immediately over the phone at his new job. This was the week after he scheduled all the Round Ups with the School system, and the DFS had to do the bilk of them.

Is the political party system detrimental to the country?
Eagle92 replied to scoutldr's topic in Issues & Politics
Depends who who you talk to. Some will say the 2 party system makes it harder for people to ID with one particular party. Also Some will say that it stagnates ideas. Others will say that the 2 party system is beneficial in that it prevents the problems of a multiparty system, i.e. stagnation in the lawmaking process, and constant turnover in government polciies. -
So.... the Right says staying in school is bad?

So.... the Right says staying in school is bad?
Eagle92 replied to broken's topic in Issues & Politics
Hal, yes they are paying "out of state" tutition," but #1 they are still taking seats from law abiding citizens and #2 NC heavily subsidizes education, so even it they are paying more than legal residents of NC,part of their education is subsidized by the taxpayers. -
Hope this never makes it across the pond
