Does your lodge have patch auctions at its events for camperships? Also is there anything that you would like to see done that your OA chapter could do? We had a young man pass away in out chapter who was a patch collector. When he died, his mother gave the chapter his patch collector and made a statement that he would have liked to have seen a shelter built in the campsite the chapter uses at OA functions. Long story short, over a 5 year period, yes he had that many patches, enough money was raised to build a shelter at the campsite. Shortly thereafter the council took notice of how nice it was and decided to build shelters at all campsites. Another idea is the campfire blanket. Grant you nto very popular in the areas I've been in, but they are a great conversation starter. Another idea wold be to doante them to a Scouting museum, either local or national.

SctLdr, If memory serves, a Paraprofessional can be under 21. Another good friend of mine who worked JLT staff was a parapro for a Scoutreach program back in the day, and I beleive he was 19 or 20.

Sometimes I wish I was that carefree again. I know that for some adults, events like WB and the OA are chances for them to be like that again. I also know a balance is needed between "energy" and "experience" Bet that "youngin" had served on summercamp staff where being a "program freak" and full of enthusiasm is not only required, but saves ones sanity during the long days and short breaks of that job. And yes probably that enthisiasm continued over to WB as all the WB courses I've heard about, yes I haven't done WB yet but hopefully 2011 will be the year, there is an element of youthfull playfulness in the forms of hiding misplaced flags, doing crazy things with the service and program patrol totems, etc. At least the young man in your class didn't have the problem a very good freind of mine had when he did WB at the age of 18: being bored out of his gourd. Since he had just staffed JLT 2-3 months before his WB course, he really didn't learn a whole bunch of new stuff.(This message has been edited by eagle92)

Wood Badge Experiences
Eagle92 replied to RandyPrice's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
M2E, How's the quest for Venturing photos coming along? I bet if you PM Emb021, he'ld be a wealth of info as he is the resident "PRO FROM DOVER" on Venturing. -
The password to JUMPSTART is nto the admonition, but a specific word that is found on a specific page of the OAHB. Probelm I heard abotu si that when they printed a new OAHB, that word was moved to a different location, and the directions were not adjusted to show the new location. As for the admonition, I know where to find it written and how to pronounce it. Ask a ceremonialist, or bet yet, Join a ceremony team !

Ok here's an update. He's reapplied as an MBC. BUT everyone knows that he is not taking new scouts, just finishing what he's started. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the replys. Thought as much, but wanted to get others opinions.

OUCH touchy situation. Unfortunately I'm seeing something similar in my council, i.e. two different council events and a district event scheduled the same weekend. A few questions. 1) Was your event planned prior to the proposed pack event? 2) Was the pack notified at the leaders' meeting that you had an event planned? If the answer is yes, i'ld go ahead as the Webelos need the experience.

I believe you handled the situation very well. Someone suggested notifying the park authoritities. I concur with that so that #1 You will not be blamed for anything they did, and #2 try to get a refund if the campsite costs were different. I also would notify the local council as I believe this is an issue for them per the LTP. they did not act in a scoutlike way and that can have some serious repercussions for everyone. What if a non-scout group reserved the campsite because they had an activity that they needed the space and pavillion? Would definately leacve a bitter taste in that group's mouth towards BSA.

Ok here is the situation. There is a gentlemen in my district who was registered last year as a MBC, and he did several eagle required MBs. He did not renew as a MBC this year, although he is still registered in the BSA, because he was asked to be religious awards counselor for his church and believed he couldn't do both time wise. Here is the problem. He has several youth who started work on their MBs with him and they want to stick with him. SM and CC of the troop involved don't have a problem, but can the gentleman still sign off on the MBC? Again the gentlemen is still registered and active in scouting, but requested no more MB students because he wants to focus on reviving the religious awards program. He just wants to finish what he started and not cause any problems with the EBOR. Thanks in advance.

Prior to being called the AOL, it was called the WeBeLos badge. That was when the Lion Rank was still around.

SctDad, No, send it my way if you don't mind. At this point I was using the new CSP 100th CSP or 100th annicversary oval patch as the basic design. Looking at the CSP design and playing with 6 CSPs on the floor, the center base patch itself is larger than my 18th WSJ backpatch. Also like the fact that 1) people will probably want to wear their Camp Charles CSP, I mean favorite camp CSP as a CSP until they get the set 2) bet it cuts cost down by not having too irregular a shape. Gonna make it so that you MUST place the CSP patch in a specific order around the centerpatch. probably will write soemthing and/or make the bottom edge of teh CSPs crooked. Also foudn out that the Sam hatcher logo is a Sailboat! 3 definite designs down, 1 possible design, and 2 to go.

Moxieman, THANKS A BUnCH FOR THE LINKS!!!!! That FDL patch gave a me a great idea. Alsoo to your questions, we don't need the "hidden puzzle lines"? Are you taking one overall picture and cutting it up or will each patch be unique, but when combined with the others form a larger picture--for example, the outline of the Fleur-de-lis? Orignially envisioned was one overall patch that incorprated either an older patch design and/or logo or totem of each camp. The middle section would be a modified CSP design, basically an ovalized CSP with the added words " East Carolina Council Camps Award" and "Because Outing is Three Fourths Scouting," So each pacth would be unique, and probably ownr as a temp insignia, until you earned the other patches. Now I like the CSP design you displayed. That may go over alot better as 1 people can wear it as a CSP until they earnt he others. If you're concerned about size, make them smaller than normal CSPs. To quote Yoda, "Size matters not" At least at this stage. If the folks say, Make it smaller, I'm good. Again Thank you very much. And yes I was shouting at you earlier, in high praise and gratitude.

Lisa, depending upon their artistic ability, I have seen one patrol buy the blank patches and paint their patrol patches.

Ok does anyone have eny experience making a "Puzzle Patch," i.e. a series of patches that when put together form a larger patch? I ask b/c I was asked to create a patch that would recognize those individuals who haev been to every camp in my council. 1 idea was to create a patch and have segments attched. Another idea was to create series of patches that combined together would be the true patch. the idea came from the puzzle patch national is selling for the 100th. Questions I have include the following 1) Is a backpatch a better option than a temp patch, especially since the council has 6 camps that it operates? 2) Is there a color background that works good to hide the puzzle lines? I was thinkign a solid black background and border, but what about solid red? FYI I am leanign to make this into a backpatch for folks to wear onthe vests and/or jackets. 3) Would this violate uniform policy for jacket in that although it is to recognize 1 acheivement, going to all of the council camps, the 'patch consists of seven individual patchs as I currently have it conceived. Thanks in advance.

Sctdad, Most of the scouting addicts like ourselves will somehow be tapped to go to NCS. BUT it does come with a caveat: council will ask you to work your butt off (like that is really a problem anyway ) I'ld talk to your DE about it. Only problem this year is this: if you are doing WB, you cannot make it this year as the nearest CS NCS is the same weekend as WB.

Folks for whatever reason the way SctDad describes roundups is how it's done here for whatever reason. it was liek this when I was a DE 11 years ago. Why I have no idea. But the DE is responsible for making contact withe superintendent to get the Ok to go to the schools, then the individual principals to schedule the boy talks and and the nites for RU. Then whatever packs, or troops for the MS, that are interested in recruiting at a particular school, that's who comes. get's interesting when 2 or more packs show up. Also this happened last week. My pack was the only pack that went to a small private school. Only 3 boys showed up to join, and they already knew what packs they wanted to join. None of them joined us.

Ok I know I posted on the alternate uniform here somewhere, just can't find the post. I said that the alternate uniform reminded me of the "activity uniform" of the 1990s that consisted of khaki shorts and a colored polo: red for Scouts and leaders, khaki for Varsity Scouts and coaches, and maroon for members of a troop's venture crew (this was pre 1998). It was a complete flop. Also with the original commentary, something sparked a memory of Urban Scouting of the 1970s, another failure. Finally I commented on what uniform a Scout would wear for attending council/ regional/ national events like NYLT, conclaves Jambo, etc. This "alternate uniform" cna casue some real headaches. Now that I see what the alternate unfiorm consists of, I googled the prices of the same items at such places as cabela's and CampMor. The items are more expensive than the regular uniform items. I really think this is going to be a flop.

Unfortunately the illegal alien problem will not go away until the broders are secured and immigration laws are enforced. Also while illegal aliens may not directly recieve money from the US governement fopr medical care, because of EMTALA, they will still be treated via the emergency rooms across the US, resulting in higher medical expenses for the rest of us. After all if the illegal alien will not pay for medical, somebody will have to. So they will still get free medical care via the US governement.

Also forgot to mention that when I asked on facebook if they could make neckers larger for older scouts and adults, they said that they are in the process of doing that, and look for it in 2010.
