  1. For me, when I was younger and first invited to attend WB, the weeklong course over the summer woul have been ideal. I was in college, had a very flexible summer job, and could have done it easily. Heck I staffed JLT during this period. However I bet we couldn't get many participants. Now it's hard enough for me to get a week off to work CSDC, but add in all the family commitments. Heck you know the wife loves me when she is lettign me attend NCS during her b-day, just gotta make it up the week before.
  2. When I first came into my current district, yes it was. they had an "Eagle kit" used at EBORs that contained FA supplies, rope, sticks, etc. And they did an exam type EBOR. That has changed in the past 11 years. HOWEVER one unit until recently had a "pre" EBOR done by the CC and Adv. chair that reviewed those KSAs from Scout to Eagle, and would not sign off the application for his EBOR until he passed that. I also think that the exam is 'Mickey Mouse." You can get the same information asking questions about his experiences and how he used those KSAs in his life. Also I don't like the ideas of "success/fail" projects. the key to the project is whether the scout planned, organized and executed a service project that demonstrated leadership. Good friend of mine did that, but his project was a "failure" becasue when he went back and all the hard work he and his volunteers did was for naught. The conservation project he did, using US Forestry Service guidelines and specs did not work as planned. Critters got to his trees thatthe USFS spec guards he built did not protect the saplings he planted.
  3. If you read the book Follow Me Boys which the movie is loosely based upon, Lem Siddons comments on the scouts he lost aong the way. Sad yes, but it will happen.
  4. Again it depends on the unit. Some units are more recognition oriented than others. I'll give you an example. My Sea Scout ship as a youth had a polo shirt with the First Class Anchor and CO on it. Also offered a hoodie with the same info, ans the ship number going down one sleeve. They didn't really care about advancement and awards one bit. Second ship was a bit mroe regimented. The uniform was 'blue white dress" similar to the Florida Sea Base's, and since we did wear white shirts similar to scouting shirts, we did wear full insignia: Sea Explorers, BSA Strip (I'm dating myself) CSP, Unit number ( for those that could as 2 of us were pros) POR, OA flap, knots, regional patch ( again 2 of use wore it) and temp insignia.
  5. OT, If your unit designs it's on unifomr, generally it's not gonna have ANY insignia on it. One expection I have seen is Sea Scout Ships , but they are the red-headed step children of Scouting and really didn't have a required uniform until recently, and some ships still creat their own per Venturing policy.
  6. In the case i mentioned, again I was not there, But talkig to the scout and his mother this is what happened. He caused problems and was counseled at several of the pre-jambo trips. For whatever reason he made soem remarks abotu the country, took the troop's US flag and set it afire near some tents, nearly catching them on fire. Becasue of the damage to troop property ( flags) and nearly setting tents on fire (safety issue) he was sent home.
  7. I don't think it's arrogrant. if they haev the SM's approval, they can yuse the unit's gear. and if not, tjhey ADAPT, IMRPOVISE, AND OVERCOME! Congrats on the Situation!
  8. To paraphrase a song: I WANT MY, I WANT MY, I WANT MY KNEE SOCKS! (to the tune of Money for Nothing)(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  9. PLC handled all discipline problems. have had to send someone home. Worse case I heard of, and I know it's a true one as the individual involved told me, was a scout getting sent home from Jamboree on the second day. Obviously no refund and mom had to pay all expenses to pick up her son.
  10. Well round up is doing well! BUT we are gonna have to split up the TC den as we now have 20 TCs Problem is I see us together until October 14th. as #1 next meeting is the Go See IT,and the first Monday in Oct is the Pack Meeting. I think I'm in trouble until then
  11. If its T-2-1 Requirements, Why aren't the PLs, SPL, and other membeers of the PLC signing off on them?
  12. So that's the title of the book. I read that book when I was a lowly Webelos over 20 years ago. had it at the public library. Hmmm Maybe I should interlibrary loan that book to read again
  13. is MY HIKE the one about the Scout who walks all the way from the southern part of South America to NYC?
  14. In reference to fundraising, one fo the problems I'm hearing is that the school PTOs in my area have already started their candy sales, and the various band programs are do their att he same time. let's not forget Trails End goinon now too.
  15. Eghlie, Thanks fo the post, you answered a question I was about to ask. We have an 11, soon to be 12yo in my pack. I thought you had to age out at 11. Looks like he has until Dec. to get his AOL.
  16. Ok here are a few ideas/options #1 contact you district commissioner and talk to thim. Usually you can find his info on the council website. teh DC is the volunteer responsible for chartering and helping units succeed. #2 If that don't work, contact the Director of Field Service or Scout Executive, depending upon the size of your council. The are the upper management professionals who are responsible for operations. #2A Mention that you have a bunch of folks wanting ot knwo their status, andyou will probably lose membership numbers becasue of this. Stress MEMBERSHIP NUMBERS as that will get their attention. #2B Mention that becasue you are so concerend abotu what's going on with the status of the new pack, you feel uncomfortable selling any product as part of a council fundraising project. that should also get their attention. #3 look for established packs and join them. IF the paperwork doesn't go through, contact the office state that the pack is merging with paxk 123 and that all applications need to be applie to that unit. I would have a letter co signe dby the new unit leadrship, yourself, and the parents.
  17. A SCOUT STAVE IS NOT A WB THING BUT A , SCOUT THING!!!!!! (Sorry for the yelling, but I had to let it out after that comment above ) If the youth are interested in doing something, LET THE DO IT, provided it is not contradicted by the G2SS, i.e. Lazertag. SJAFB is right up the road from you. talk to their PA folks abotu if a unit wuld be willing to give you a tour, as they do not do full base tours on weekends. OR schedule the base tour during the holidays. Have a Chapter Kayaking or Sailing expedition through PSB. Have a Pizza Nite. Have a Christmas party. GAME NITE! What ever you do, LET THE YOUTH DO THE TALKING AND IGNORE THE OLD FOGEYS!!!!!!! (Except me 'cause I got your back)
  18. I would say we would have to look to OK for the first Boy Scout. If memory serves, an Anglican missionary in 1908 or 1909 received a charter through the the Scout Association in the UK to start a troop at his mission in Indian Country. I am told that the unit still exists today, and there is a memorial to that unit in existance on the reservation.
  19. Trainerlady, I thought RT staff, being part of the commissioner service wear silver? With all the uniform confusion I think i'll stick with what I have. or I may follow a good friend of mine who is a Scout history nut, and wear vintage uniforms. My wife already has a vintage 1950s den mother uniform. I really like the vintage 1985 uniform my friend wore consisting of Green shirt with SCOUTS, BSA (not Exploring BSA), red loops, and ASM insignia. Looked spiff!
  20. How can a cub scout advance if there is no book that has been signed off byt he parents, and recorded by the DL? I ahte to say it but when Chuck Cub Scout sees his freinds getting advancement, and he is not, then he may ask his parents for a book so he can get advancement. As for the uniform, I would encourage everyone to get the uniform and wear it with pride. For those who cannot afford a new uniform, and I was that CS and BS growing up, you can always get expereinced uniforms through unit closets, thrift stores, and ebay. As for the folks who can afford it and don't care, try talkign to them over a cup of coffee. Let them know that it IS important, and that go over allthe stuff abotu uniforms in the various BSA publications. Also if your unit participates in community functions like parades and what not, stress that not being in uniform WILL draw attention, and will make the cub feel uncomfortable.
  21. SR540 Got ya. Thought it was kinda funny that venturers were on staff. Although to the patrols they were assigned to, they were Owles, etc. As for WB and Venturers, I don't know what to think. I am all for 18-20 yos getting training, and it is a pet peeve of mine when they get 'discounted" b/c of their age, but there is also KODIAC for Venturers, which I don't know much about. And let's not forget NYLT, which I am told uses almost the saem format as WB, and I gatehr that impression because of teh awarding of WB beads to adutl staffers of that course. But that is another topic.
  22. I like the change, didn't make sense that someone registered as an ASM at 18-20 could take the course, but someone else registered as a Venturer inthe same age bracket could not. Now my question is this; What do you now do for those Venturers who have staffed WB as a youth? My council did have Venturers staff either part or all of WB.
  23. if memory serves, silver loops were nto restricted, but the gold ones were.
  24. When I mentioned by laws, I should have stated that the YOUTH and 18-20YO ASMs cameup witht he Bylaws. In fact the VCL/PL and SPL worked together, did all the research, organized how they were gonna run the Venturing Crew, etc. BEFORE they talked the adult troop leadership and to the DE. they viewed it as an ooprotunity for further fun and advancement, while helping the troop at the same time. By the time they talked to the adults, it was practically a fait accompli.
  25. Dancin, Thanks for the update. Can't use loops, they're Centennial Loops (lol)! Also I juts got another message saying that all loops are the same and the previous message had been in error.
