  1. Forgot the James E. West and religious knots.(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  2. An ENLARGING MACHINE! Ok been reviewing skits to do this weekend and that one is a classic
  3. Use your youth leadership. As suggested SPL can be a positive influnce. Also if teh SPL does talk to teh scout(s) in question, I would also have their PL there as well and allow the PL to correct him and work with him. Another idea would be to have an action packed weekend that reguires the patrol to work as a team. If they mess around it affects the entire patrol. the weekend is designed to either let them realize they must work together or they will fail. If they succeed, have the SPL do a reflection, or lead one yourself if the SPL isn't comfortable doing it (yes I ahev met a few). If they fail, agin have a reflection on how they can do better.
  4. Sherm, You also got a MB sash that shrunk without washing? National ought to do something about that
  5. Ok I was the slacker as a scout. Sr year of HS was the worse as I was invloved in JROTC and a cheerleader (great way to meet girls, just don't date your partner), and while I was "active" attednign meetings when I could and actively playing an instructor role when at the meetings, advancement wise I was a slacker. Let's face it 4 years as a Life Scout with only MBs to complete to get Eagle (I did my project within 4 months of turning Life and had it out the way ASAP), THAT'S A SLACKER. Well Scouts who I was PL and ASPL for started getting their Eagle. One nite I made a joke about "getting old because XYZ is now eagle." Well my Sm gave me his look and very calmly but sternly made a comment about setting goals in life and working to acheive them, because time does run out. THAT was the push for me to complete the last two MBs I needed for Eagle, and just in time: completed the las one 5 days before the 18th birthday!
  6. Rk, Onething about the centennial rings, no one has publicly stated that they are limited in time. it's been implied, commented on FB, but NATIONAL hasn't come out and said it yet. FYI (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
  7. Scoutnut, The current term for the paw is Tiger Track, I know I know they keep changing the terms on us, but that is straight from the training literature. I also prefer it when it was worn on the belt and made out of leather. BUT with TCs being fully incorporated into CS now, things do change, and mostly for the better in reference to CS. Snow In reference to Bobcat being first, I know my 1950s Den Mothers handbook states that the Bobcat is the frist badge earned as it it the besic requirement for being a CS. The reason why I ask is that once upon a time, when TCs didn't earn Bobcat and they had their own promise, you got the Totem/Paw/Track as soon as you did the 3 things. But now that they are fully integrated into the pack EVERYONE is saying that they need to wait until Bobcat, including my co trainer. We got thhings handled for this bunch of TCs, we will be workign on teh Bobcat badge for our DISCOVER, so that they can get the PAw "after earning their BoBcat, they just have to wait ot the next pack meetingor the bobcate badge. LONG CEREMONY with 30+ bobcats
  8. Ok need help finding the reference. I know I read somewhere that as soon as a TC knows the motto, sign, and salute they should get their Tiger Track Immediate recognition, but I am having several leaders and my fellow trainer at training today that they get the Tiger track and their Bobcat at the same time. I know that there has been lots of changes with TC to an old fogey like me, so some help would be greatly appreciated.
  9. My district has done them, and I have sold tickets to them as a scout. My current district uses it more as a recruiting tool than anything else.
  10. grwoing up it was the follwoing 1 No shoes in tents. wore out the floors faster 2 No metal frames in tents, ditto above.
  11. $400 for eagle, kinda cheap. We had one dad, a specialist in the medical field (neuroology i bleive), told his son he could have hte car od his choice when he got eagle. Interestingly enough he earned 62 MBs, but never did his project before he turned 18. And he didn't get teh 'Vet of his dreams either.
  12. Scoutnut, The 10.5 rule has been modified, it's now six months since completing 4th grade OR 6 months from turning 10, whichever comes first. As for the challenge of a NSP with 4 scouts, ocne upon a time there was a little experiment call BROWNSEA in which 20 boys formed 4 patrols: Curlews, Ravens, Bulls, and Wolves, of 5 members each. Their SM was a gentleman by the name of Lt.Gen. Sir R.S.S. Baden-Powell, and he had his 9 or 10 y.o. nephew as a mascot. Hence the Brownsea 22. Here is what i would do. I would have the SPL appoint a PL instead of a TG. Have the PL work with them and get them far enough along where these 4 can run for PL and take over when the others arrive in February. I wouldn't worry about a 5 man patrol too much.(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  13. dental floss, either waxed or unwaxed. Just don't use a flavored
  14. Welcome to the forums. If memory serves, you cannot wear your uniform, for fundraising (unless council approved i.e Trails End) political endorsements (although and opening flag ceremony is OK)commercial endorsements (so no appearing in ads) etc. I bleive the Insignia Guide talks more in detail about it.
  15. Good question. on the back of the card, it states req. 19 of the bear Book. http://www.geocities.com/~PACK215/whittlin-chip378x255.jpg
  16. Back in the day, when there were time requirements for every rank and First Aid MB was required for First Class rank, it was very doable IF you were active. I joined my first troop in May, missed out on summer camp, and transferred to old troop in December. So between May and November I got as far as Second Class, if memory serves. It took me until July to get First Class b/c of the First Aid MB requirements, and it was strongly suggested I take this at summer cmap b/c of the quality of the instructor. Still remember him, what he taught, and how he taught it: stuff we can use on a backpacking trip. Both troops were active, but it was up to the scout to get the signatures, SMC and BOR. PLs worked with the scouts when asked to by the scout. All responsibility was on the scout however. Now the time requirements are gone for T-2-1, and most camps have an all day first year camper program that teaches these skills. Soem ar excellent, some need help. But I do know of Scouts who had joined in May, go on camp out in june, go to summer camp in july, and get three BORs in one nite ( I know that it isn't nec., but this was when the time requirements were first gone and no one knew how to deal with a scout going from Scout to First Class in one nite. So 3 BORs were held) One thing that kept those skills honed was that we were a youth led troop, and you had to knwo your stuff to teach. Gran you all of us had our "specialty" scout skills that we knew better than anyone else and usually taught, But once you were FC, you were expected to be abel to teach t-2-1 skills at any moment if asked. So our guys who did get FC within a year were teachingthose skills back to the new guys.
  17. Snow White, Welcome to the forums.
  18. Ok my Thoughths on council level FOS. It is a necessary evil, just like government. It VERY important because it helps supports those scouts who may not otherwise afford scouting. As fro having scouts bear more of the burden, while I scout does indeed need to pay their own way, i.e. uniforms, dues camp fees, etc. I also know that if Scouts had to pay the true costs of scouting,we would lose many scouts as it would be viewed as a "Rich man's club." I know that growing up I had a hard enough time paying for registration, troop dues, and monthly activities. But if I also had to pay the cost that my old council stated was the per scout scout cost to run the council, I would not be able to afford it, and would have left the movement. That's one reason why I give to my council's FOS as much as I can. That's why I designate my UW gift to another local council. Scouting is important, and those FOS dollars allow our great program to be affordable to all scouts.
  19. I have mixed emotions on this topic. Now I got 1st class in 14 months, this was back in the old days when you had to have First Aid MB for First Class and there were time restrictions between all the ranks.. I would have gotten FC within a year if I went to summer cmap at 11 though. Between the first year camper program at camp, and the troop's normal program, camping and/or hiking every month save December (COH/Christmas Party) it was very doable. Not many did though. However when the FCE program came out, many promoted the idea that a scout MUST get FC in a year. Along with that the time restrictions went away, and I know some folks don't like them but I did,so did Skill Awards. So some troops DID create programs to ram scouts through. The key is that SCOUTING is a game with a prupose. Scouts need to go at their own pace. The opportunity for advancement is there, but they goat their own pace.
  20. Ok I am a TCDL right now and after monday's nite meeting, 20 is way to many even with active parents. First meeting wasn't too bad as it was our Go See IT and the local FD did a great job. But our next meeting, while planned using Program Helps, was still a littel chaotic. Hopefuly we will be getting some TCDLs and splitting the den into 3 dens.
  21. "Yoda, you seek Yoda. Come take you to him I will."
  22. Old uniform items on sale at SCOUTSTUFF.ORG. I bought several pairs of old Switchbacks for $9.99.
  23. All four books in John Christopher's White Mountains trilogy ( yes 4 books in trilogy, don't ask). Remember reading that in Boys Life as a CS. Also the book about the Scout who hikes from Agentina to NYC.
  24. Must concur with John-in-KC in that I've had some very positive experiences with female staffers at camp. They tend to work as harder, sometimes harder, than the males. Also I knew of sisters who were dual registered as ASMs in a troop, and as Venturers with a crew when they were in the 18-20 yo bracket. Also had essentially an all-female crew (the guys were with their respective patrols),aged 14-15 y.o., who beat every single patrol, including a venture patrole that had came back from Philmont, and a patrol headed to Philmont.
