From this post http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewthread.asp?threadID=260396 Female Boy Scout leader charged with having sex with boy in troop By Nicholas J.C. Pistor ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 12/09/2009 ST. CLAIR COUNTY A female Boy Scout troop leader was charged Tuesday with criminal sexual assault for allegedly having sex with an underage boy. Sheriff's deputies said the boy's parents arrived at their home outside Lebanon from a shopping trip Sunday to find the woman "engaging in mutual intercourse with their minor son." CRIME STATS Wendy R. Rogers, 39, of the 1400 block of North Smiley Street in O'Fallon, Ill., was named in one count of criminal sexual assault and held in the county jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. She was arrested at the scene after the parents blocked the door so she could not leave, authorities said. Police said they were still conducting interviews with members of Troop 35 in O'Fallon to see if there are other victims. A troop statement said that Rogers' membership has been revoked and she won't be allowed to participate in scouting again. "Other criminal acts of sexual intercourse between the two are being investigated, which possibly occurred at the suspect's residence and during a camping trip in Southern Illinois with the Boy Scouts," said sheriff's Capt. Steve Johnson. "This betrayal from an adult in a leadership position undermines the entire philosophy of the Boy Scouts and everything they stand for," he said. "The local management of the Boy Scouts has been very cooperative with the investigation."

Well I have seen KLINGON interpreter strips, and yes there is a Klingon to English dictionary http://www.amazon.com/Klingon-Dictionary-Star-Trek/dp/067174559X Good friend of mine in HS and college was a Treckie, and spoke Klingon fluently. He even tried to get the college to approve Klingon as a foreign language to meet that credit. The college was not amused.(This message has been edited by eagle92)

Jersey, Unfortunately the literacy and civics levels of some of the commentors on that link leave something to be desired. There are a few people are complaining that all the BSA did was revoke the membership. They didn't understand that A) the lady was arrested and will be going through leagal procedings (the lieracy aspect) and B) there is a presumption of innocence until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt (civics aspect). So yes a few commentors HAVE questioned the BSA's response. Sad but true. (This message has been edited by eagle92)

I hate to see a camp close, but know why it happens. For those units that do not go to your council's summer cmap on a regular basis, or even summer camp at all, this can happen in your council

E, I just tell them how I've been told, and that one came form some Dutch scouts if memory serves. Although it could equally apply to Americans, as I noted in my sig at the end, Canadians (excepting the Quebecois), and Aussies.

Does the individual even know about it? Sometimes the question of whether a person gets an award or not is whethter is know about it, or if they get nominated. A great example would be a person I work with, who for several years was responsible for this major award banquet. Long story short, everyone thought sh had already received it when she had never been nominated for it. We took care of that.

Ok this reminds me of a joke I heard when I was staffing a scout camp in the European Camp Staff Program. What do you call someone who speaks two languiages....bilingual. How about someone who speaks three languages.......trilingual. What about someone who only speaks one language................................................................................................................................ .... an Englishman From the monolingual EAGLE92

Acco, I have to respectfully disagree with you in referecne to our congresscritters. For those congresscritters in the House of Reps., they should be listening to the voices of their constituents, but not the lobbyists. That his how the Founding Fathers wanted it as shown by the two year terms and apportionment based upon population. Now for those those congresscritters in the Senate, I have to agree with you, except they need to be sequestered away from everyone for 6 years After all Senators were originally appointed by the states and not elected.

Interpreter strips for many Americans are hard things to earn, so you don't see many folks wear them. Plus many folks don't even know about them. I bought a Francaise(sp) strip for my wife who was an adjunct in French at one time. BUT I've seen them worn by both youth and adults. I remember having to order 2 Cantonese strips for a new DL and her son. Thinking about it I know several folks who would qualify for the Vietnamese strip, don't wear it.

I'm back. Thanks for all the advice and links,as they are excellent. PMs will be coming everyone's way. Back to some questions I have. I have some left over scraps of point blanket that I made(and hopefully the Whispering Wind article I used is correct design for the era). What would be some ideas to use these pieces for? I was thinking of making some gloves or mittens, as I hate the cold, to match the capote. And again there is not much material left and any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Back to Chapter commentary. A few of the youth came up with the idea for the capotes, so there is hope. This came up after A) a bunch of the adults started wearing them and B) the ceremony team had to do an outdoor CS ceremony when it got cold. Luckily they borrowed some capotes and my spare blanket for a matchcoat. So they looked good IMHO.

The Go-See-It is one of the best parts of Tigers, with the absolute best part being the camping! To meet 4G - Go See It Activity Visit a television station, radio station, or newspaper office. Find out how people there communicate with others. You must have the field trip. Now if memory serves it can be done as with the family, but it is a great trip for the TCs. Some ideas to help. 1) Look at the local newspaper office, they may be more accommodating. 2) If you got a local college or university in the area, see if you can visit their newspaper office or radio office. Good luck. Hopefully my den will be doign this the second week in Jan.

John, TRUST ME I know what the ways councils can screw up records My records were slightly screwed up (the registrar at the time would use the date inputed into the computer instead of the date on the AR) and had a good friend completely screwed up (they had him listed as a star scout on the charter for 3 years, despite repeated attempts to correct it.) In my case they had to use my photocopies of my handbook (don't ask; book went for a swim after LBOR ) And my buddy's book and ARs.

Maybe I'm old school, or maybe my troop wasn't advancement oriented, but the ONLY person responsible for keeping track of advancement is the scout, not the PLs, not the SPLs, and not the leaders. The PLs may be told what their patrol members need in order for advancement. The SPL may push for advancement opportunities in the planning of his program for his planning conference, and the leaders may advise implementing advancement opportunities. But Ultimately the Scout is responsible. Now the scout will need assistance from folks. As stated he will need to advise the PL and through the PL the SPL what he needs done to advance. And he will need adults to get the MBCs and assist in getting some of the paperwork completed for Eagle. And of course adutls may need to have a SMC or ROR to find out what's going on and why the scout isn't advancing. But again the Scout and Scout alone is responsible, and no one else.

Haven't read deToucquville, in toto, only read quotes from him, but I believe he said that the republic will last until the politicians learn that they can buy the people's votes using their own[people's own] money. Also another who had seen the fall of a previous republic, if memory serves, stated that all the citizens wanted was "bread and circuses." Why does those quotes seem so applicable today.

BSA Chainsaw Safety training...
Eagle92 replied to le Voyageur's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I was told effective 1 january 2010 you will need the course, so it should have been offered already. I have limited experience and plan on taking it when I can, the course my council offered conflicted with the council CS event I was working. -
Been a long time since I read Federalist Papers, but I thought the purpose of the House of Reps was to represent the will of the people, hence being elected every 2 years, while the Senate was the slow deliberate body that exercised their best judgment while representing their state, hence they were originally appointed by the state government and for a 6 year period.

Long story short, the ones that were interested and did some research left to go to college. I did a lot of the research because 1) I had a bunch of the materials due to MA thesis proposal adn B) this is a topic I'm very interested in. We actually got the leggings and aprons ( I know, I know), but need to work on mocs, shirts and gustawahs (sp) We got a new bunch in now and we will see what happens.

In reference to the OA, I am working on it. The chapter a few years back decided to go local, specifically Tuscarora as that nation lived here prior to moving back to NYS and our chapter name is Tuscaroran. Problem is that the Plains Indian look is so persuasive that it ti svery hard to counter it, at least in my neck of the woods.

Thanks for the input. To be honest this is more personal interest than scouting related. BUT the idea has come up somewhat at OA chapter meetings. One person in the lodge does reenacting, and i'll be talkign to him in March, and the discussion to make capotes for the chapter has come up as a chapter project. Someone mentioned reenacting, and it has been on my mind since.

I know there are a few fur trade living historians out there, so I'm asking for some advice. #1 good websites and books to get started. Mostly what I need I that department is wardrobe and equipment to get started as I got a good bit of info on European-Native American relations (would have done a thesis on this topic for my MA if the university allowed, they decided to cancel all the courses on the period). #2 Good sites and resources for the minutia that is important to know, but may be difficult to find. Best and funniest example I can give is in Straight Dancing, how you wear your sash indicates A) if your single B) if you are married, and C) married but still looking. At least that is what I've been told by several reliable sources. Thanks in advance.

YMCA Swimming and Youth Protection
Eagle92 replied to OldGrayOwl's topic in Open Discussion - Program
In what aspect? Do you mean the changing rooms? If that's the case, what I have seen done is everyone shows up in their swim gear, so no need for changing rooms at that point. When everyone get's ready to leave, youth first, then adults. or I've seen some adults get dressed while the scouts are finsihign up, then scouts get dressed, then the remaining adults. -
Sorry to hear about you stepping down, but thatnks for what you have done. I am glad you are working on succession planning as I have seen units suffer with the loss of a good leader. One thing to make sure, and it sounds as if you got it under control, is to ensure teh patrol method is understood and used by the youth, as well as understood by the adults so they can leave the scouts alone, save in emergencies. Also working with your replacement is great, not fun being handed things over and told "hear ya go."

If you were the National Commissioner...........
Eagle92 replied to Scout Commish's topic in Council Relations
Avid, Sorry about the last post, didn't see your post when I commented. that's what happens when you start to type, get interupted by work,a nd come back to finish. At least the interuption was good: cake, meatballs, and punch from a retirement party. No as to why that section of the book is in there, a few comments. #1 I don't have the book in front of me as I donated most of that stuff to those who really needed it and #2 it's been a while sicne I was a UC, so bear with me. If memory serves, that section is to understand our role in helping a unit remove a leader. We don't start the process, the unit does, and our job is to help them get through it as it is VERY messy and VERY painful. Been there, done that, and hated it even if it was needed. -
If you were the National Commissioner...........
Eagle92 replied to Scout Commish's topic in Council Relations
Avid, Must respectfully disagree that a UC can remove a unit leader. Only the CO can remove a leader, except when the BSA revokes a memebership. And then the SE initiates that process. Now a UC may be useful in the process when a unit's committee or BSA leadership want to remove a leader from a POR. Usually in discussing with the COR and/or IH how the BSA program works, why the leader needs to be removed, etc. If it was as easy as you said, then there would be no challenging units.
