MN, Check the date on the software the council is providing as it may be out of date. I know of councils sthat still provide the 1998 version of SM Faststart training. SCOUTNET, which is the NATIONAL database that the council uses for record keepign purposes does have TIGER as a rank to be earned AFTER Bobcat. And as for the link, it is a BOY SCOUT TROOP, so they may not bve as intereste din being as accruate on the CS side. Since I've become part of the ' Blue Terror" I've noticed how little the BS folks, esp the older Scouters, know baout CSs.

How soon is too soon for Wood Badge?
Eagle92 replied to Scoutfish's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Sherm, To answer your first question, I was told that ALL leader specific, from TCDL to Adviser/Assoc. Aedviser training will be available online. Only courses that need to be "face to face" will be BALOO and the new Outdoor Skills Course that will combine WeLOT, IOLS, and may incorporate some outdoor Venturing stuff. -
Info, Thanks for the links. I already found them and they are geared towards BS NCS, not CS NCS. HOWEVER, I am assuming, and you know where that can lead to, that some of the programing info overlaps. Key questions I need to know are A) what time I need to be there and B) what time can I tell my wife to expect me home With three kids all under the age of 6, gotta know when I can take over with them; keep the wife happy

Good question. No Idea. When I went to look at the promo copy of CS2010, they didn't any TC plans.

Thanks a bunch folks. Yep the camps are suppose to be a money maker for the council. BUT I for one am glad b/c I do know where that money is goign After years of benign neglect, the council is using the oldest camp again for more and more activities, including my district's CSDC. Long story short some major improvements are being planned at the lcoal camp, which will benefit not only CSDC in years to come, but scouting as a whole. So I'm not concerned about where the money is going, I personally want a new bath/shower house, among other improvements. As for our prices, we are in an economically hard hit area, even before the current recession, and have tried to minimize costs as much as possible. Even at $55, we still have folks who can't afford it! last year one of the council's fundraising projects was selling coupon books that inlcuded a coupon for CSDC, the summer camp, and the HA base we own. that helped tremendously. Please keep the ideas coming. ALSO if anyone knows what type of prepwork I need to bring to NCS, please tell me as I still have not received my paperwork form national. Thanks in advance.

i am so glad that my pack doesn't stop over the summer. BUT we do cut back to two meetings/month, basically every other week. And there are more activities than meetings: Going to the 501st Star Wars reenactors display at the library, pool party, baseball games, etc. Plus we are planning a trip to Patriot's Point and a day trip to DC. The key is.... KISMIF!

Dr. Dean, Around here, Kindergarten is a full day. But I agree with your assessment. I too think "Lions" is a bad idea.

I am facing part of this problem now. Scouting is not about advancement, but about giving the cubs the opportunity to grow physically mentally and morally through a series of activities either with the family and/or den. advancement recognized their best attempt at doign the activities. One thin I did tonite while my Tigers were making maps was go over books and have hte tigers come one at a time with their parent. Now some parents have joint custody, which makes collecting books 'challenging", and sometimes signatures even more so. Perfectly good example on was one Tiger, who has missed a few meeting and hasn't had his book to others. Attendance and lack of records was so bad I thought he dropped out. He showed back up after 1.5 months at Scout Sunday with mom and life is good Anyway I finally get his book and stuff that he completed back in October is finally recorded. Also a few items that I remember him doing were NOT recorded in the book, nor in my records (mea culpa on the record keeping, but 23 TCs at one time was a challenge) and I had ask a few questions to confirm what I knew, he did the requirement, and mom/ dad forgot to sign off on it. Sometimes just a few brief questions will answer the questions. BUT if Akela signs it, it is valid.

Ok folks I am scheduled to be at THE SUMMIT in NC for CS National Camp School this Friday. However I have yet to receive the paperwork saying what I need to bring, what prep work I need to bring, equipment, etc. I know from the last time I went to NCS, for COPE back in the day, a little prepwork goes a long way. So if anyone is going, or even staffing Can you get me the following info: 1) What time does it start? 2) What time will it end? 3) What supplies and equipment do I need to bring? Thanks in advance.

How soon is too soon for Wood Badge?
Eagle92 replied to Scoutfish's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Back in the day when you had a CS trainer WB and a BS WB, they did away with the Exploring WB prior to me becoming an adult, you not only had to be completely trained, but have 2 years tenure as an adult, waivable if you were an 18 or 19 y.o. ASM. if memory serves With WB21C, as soon as you are completely trained, you are good to go. Now I am assuming, and you know what can happen with that , you will be a WDL or AWDL next year when you take it, so you will need the following courses Cub Scout Leader Fast Start Training. Youth Protection Training. This is Scouting. You may have taken the older course New Leader Essentials Webelos den leaders and assistants Specific Leader Training Now some councils are requiring WDLs and AWDLs to have Webelos Leader Outdoor Training ( or whatever they are calling it now), but they are part of the Mandatory training pilot program. And National is about to combine WLOT and IOLS, and possibly add some Venturing info into the mix, and make a one size fits most, BALOO will still be a separate course. Yep WB is an experience, and one that i am looking forward to. i've had simialar ones with Brownsea 22 and JLT, and it was FUN! -
Somehow your council is messing up if they are NOT recording TC as a rank becasue TCs are FULLY integrated. It is no longer the 'year before," They no longer "graduate" into Cubs, they wear blue unfiorm like everyone else in the pack, etc etc. The only thing I wish they would change is the name, simplifying it TIGERS. After all We don't call Wolves "Wolf Cubs", Bears "Bear Cub" or Webelos " Webelos Cubs." Also FAST TRAX and PROGRAM HELPS have already made the transition.

BD, Technically speaking yes they are two different items. i've been told that a blouse is a ladies' garment that is tailored more to their figure with, with buttons on the left side of the garment. thisis compared to a shirt which is a men's garment that is looser fitting, and has buttons on the right side. while it is socially acceptable for a lady to wear a shirt, it is not socially acceptable for a man to wear a ladies shirt. So sayeth the sis-in-law who is costumer and really big into period apparrel (sp).

Like I said, I think it could be worded better, i.e. " All Female leaders...." because not every CS leader is female, I'm a case in point. By stating that "CS leaders and female leaders...." it does allow male CS leaders the option. Case in point is a pic of a Cub Scouter in complete uniform with a NCS patch above the pocket, and of course nothign on the pocket. And as I stated previously I would add female Venturers to the rule as well, since some of them have the same "challenges" as the female leaders. BD, FYI, the newer yellow blouses do have pockets. My wife personally hates the yellow and blue uni, as well as teh centennial uni, and decided to go retro with a vintage 1950s den mother uniform. http://scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=UNIFORMS&C3=USHIRTS&C4=&LV=3&item=962WSS&prodid=962WSS^8^01RTL&

Greaves, The Fundraiser idea for a meal is awesome! Why didn't I think about it, especially since the OA does that at the district camporee, council camporee, and district Webloree already. All profits are divied up between camperships and the council camp in our district mainenece fund. Camp could pay for the cubs and staff out of budget, parents, siblings, etc could pay. While i would like the Cubs to cook themselves, it may be easier! TDK, Plan is to have a walkabout from 4PM - 5:30. meal prep, eating, and free time would be 5:30 to 6:45.

I've read somewhere that national is going retro for the 100th anniversary of scouting for commisioner pateches.

OSS, as long as they are showing up and trying, give it to them. If not then adapt, improvise, and overcome. I am facing similar problems in that those who do show up are way ahead of those who show up on occasion, usually do to joint custody situations. Some Ideas to help, which Iwill be implementing shortly. 1) Made a newsletter with info on advancement to the parents and "homework." I told them my goal, April pack meeting for the TC badge, and stressed that they can work with their son on advancement. 2) Planning on "split sessions" during our "makeup meetings." My march meetings are planning to be make up meetings, with a den opening and closing, then split off to do missing advancement. For those who are up to date, I got some electives planned.

Adam, Challenge is that you also have female Boy Scout and Venturing leaders who are female. So if you wanted uniformity within a unit, Boy Scout and Venturing leaders should also have the options using your argument, shouldn't they? Not trying to be a PITA, but am actually trying to bring an awareness to what I believe is a misprint, but apparently is not. If I am going overboard, I apologize in advance, BUT I've been told I'm a member of the Uniform Police, and yes this irks me a little. Ok I'm outta here, gotta go cut off a bunch of knots and resew them on my uniforms since I got new one last nite that messes up my personal order of precedence per IG.
-
That's the key, "DO YOUR BEST," As long as they try, I give credit. Now if they didn't try, that's a different story.

Emb and BDPT I hate to say it, but the Uniform Inspection sheet does state that CS leaders can wear 1 temp patch over the pocketor on the pocket. I quote the passage below and bold the sentence. Temporary insignia, including one current world Scout jamboree patch, centered on pocket. Only one temporary insignia may be worn at a time, and they are not required for correct uniforming. Cub Scout leaders and female leaders [italics in original]wearing the official uniform shirt or blouse may wear one temporar insignia centered above the Boy Scouts of America strip. When I was first told about this and read it, I thought it was a misprint, contacted national about the error via email and the MYSCOUTING.ORG Publication Errors group. haven't heard back. I do think it's odd that CS leaders irregardless of gender can choose where to wear their temp insignia. And as stated above, wish they would let the female Ventureres the option if they are goign to let all "female leaders" the option. Me personally I ain't wearing a temp patch above the pocket. I wear my WSJ patch in the 'jambo spot. Also I strongly recommended temp insignia on the pocket. Also you would think that a WBer would know better than to place temp insignia on the uniform. In retrospect, maybe a simplified uniform would be the way to go. I don't ever remember this many problems with uniforming as a youth as there is today. basement, While I agree with 99%, this description below does come a national website, and does describe the Field Uniform as a Class A. http://scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=UNIFORMS&C3=TROUSERS&C4=&LV=3&item=689SHORTS&prodid=689SHORTS^8^01RTL& Our Centennial Supplex Uniform Short is designed to offer a Land to Water option that is functional and convenient. Stuck at the Aquatics Center before needing to report to the Mess Hall in full Class A? This new short is the answer!

Thanks for the help folks. My goal is 80 Cubs, essentially doubling last year's numbers. DE thinks we are getting 100 since I am promoting it more than it has in the past and I am revamping the program. Biggest complaint was that it was the same old same old. Goal is to have the kids do the cooking. Cobblers will be by den, and for simplicity's sake will be peach all around, unless someone has allergies. Rough menu is hamburgers, hot dogs, bug juice, sun tea, chips, and cobbler. Idea is to use a pig cooker for safety. And I will have some non-meat alternatives for those who don't eat meat.

Basement, Yep on the abbreviations. As for costs, Camps is $55 by X date, $70 after X date up to the day of. EXCEPTION is all new TCs, i.e. Kindergartners who sign up after school ends. They get the $55 fee. $5 is the estimate, we will be charging cost rounded up to the nearest half dollar. never thought about licensing. Need to look into that. Our campers bring their own lunches, so I never thought about that. Going to be at NCS next weekend and learn what else I'm don't know I would think that the cooking would be OK since it's going to be foil cooking that the boys do.

Ok folks, new PD here so go easy. In trying to revamp the CSDC program, one thing that came into mind was having a "feast" and campfire on Friday evening/nite. Obviously the price of CSDC would include the feast for the Cubs, but do you think charging an extra $5, or whatever the cost of the meal is, for parents and siblings would be too much to ask? I know that we are having some hard times economically, we have lost 1 or 2 cubs adn that is with offering a payment plan and financial aid, so I don't want to see like we are nickle and diming folks.

Concur don't go by others, I've seen all kinds of things done. the Insignia Guide found here http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Media/InsigniaGuide.aspx And the Uniform Inspection Sheets found here http://scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/forms.aspx are the best resources. EDITED: According to the Uniform inspection sheet, as a CS leader you have the option of 1 temporary pact EITHER on the right pocket OR above the right pocket in what is commonly referred to as the "Jambo Patch spot." Now I can understand female leaders wearing it above the pocket, wish they would allow female Venturers the courtesy, and have no reason why they included male CS leaders int hat rule, but they are.(This message has been edited by Eagle92)

responsibilitite of the scout and scouter
Eagle92 replied to nattyB's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I actually encountered the opposite problem growingup: OA didn't do things, BUT the troop did have an active a vibrant program for older scouts. This was during the Leadership Corps time frame. Also Out roop WAS Scoutled, with the PLC doign the work. Opportunities for older scouts away from the younger ones were incorporated when possible inot the troops outings Most of the time though, the older scouts were the ones runnging the program. That said, I've seen what has been described happen too, maybe not to the degree described, but youth doing OA over troop. Sometimes I blame the adults for putting pressure on the Arrowman to do OA stuff over the troop. Heck I had some ribbing b/c I missed an OA Workday in order to get ready for Conclave, b/c my primary registrations, District committee, had me setting up for the district awards banquet. But if you have an active program in a troop, the youth will stay.
