  1. This issue reminds me of BORs to a degree. Let's face it id the adults screw up and the youth do something incorrectly under the adult's direction, we don't penalize the youth for the adult's mistake. The same should apply to when National screws up royally: we should not penalize youth who have started on these WHEN the information was presented. Official sources posted the requirements and who do have motivated scouts who will work on something, especially when it was posted they had to earn it between Jan 1 and Dec 31 2010. Now I don't think Scout who have NOT started on them should, they need to wait until the offical requirements are out. BUT those who HAVE started, using the requirements THAT WERE POSTED ON NATIONAL SITES ( CAPS FOR EMPHASIS) should be allowed to finish those up. Also fo those who started under the old requirements, they need to finish up by 31 Dec, since they started under the old timeline, Those who start under the new requireements need to follwo that timeline.
  2. Omnia Gallia divisa est tres partes.
  3. JC PEnny use to sell a 99% identical hat to the Expedition hat. It was made by the same company, identical to everythign but the leather strap.
  4. For whatever reason, someone in the 1970s came up with the necker under the collar. And we all knwo how bad the 70s were in scouting. I have always worn the necker over the collar. BUT the "Elvis" collar of the CU make it a bit more challenging IMO to wear it properly under the collar. I've found that in order to get it set correctly when I tuck the collar in, I must button it, then tuck it.
  5. thatw as one nice thing about having a cardiologist as a leader, HE dealt with all the medical problems;)
  6. yep they did away with that requirement about 15 years ago.
  7. I prefer one of my Smokey Bears, and am usually seen in one of them. But I will an old camp staff cap whenever I visit the camp. I also wear the Expedition Hat, now know as the brimmed hat, when I know it's going to rain, and occasionally will wear my gray air scout beret from the UK with my Venturing uniform. But the bulk of the time is a Smokey Bear.
  8. Yep folks will be wearing them for a very long time And I will be one of them. Unlike the tan and green numbers I did take off my CU when nationally finally decided to let CS leaders know we are suppose to wear the red and whites, i only had the number on about 1-2 weeks and they are the same size, I've worn the sahirt long enough with the ring that I bet if I tool it off, you culd tell it was on there.
  9. Yep according to national, "active" = registered.
  10. WELCOME TO THE ORDER!!!!!!! Like Neil above, I too didn't get elected until my 3rd time. BUT fortunately I knew why I wasn't elected: those elected before me WERE better scouts than me (it's kinda hard to ge t upset when your SPL, the guy you look up to and want to be like is on the ballot with ya ) You will find that the OA is a rich source of camraderie, expereicnes, and "WORK WORK WORK." Congrats again!
  11. RS, LOL. Been there, done that, was part of the council problem, and now I'm back since I'm now on two of the council's programming committees ( that's what happens when you make suggestions) JG, Welcome to the forums! Anything can be placed on the packs. In fact had 1 patch on my old ALICE pack, my leather 50 miler patch, BUT I would advise against putting any old patch on it. #1 patches add weight and #2 sewing them onto the pack does cause some minor waterproofing problems. EDITED: So make sure it's a special patch that goes on it. Sometime inthe near future, I will be placing my WSJ and 50 Miler leather patches on my new pack. Nopw that i have holes in my 50 miler, and the WSJ patch has holes prepunched, I don't haev to take them to a cobler to sew the patches on.(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  12. THANK YOU FOR FIXING THE SITE!!!!!! (YES I AM SHOUTING AT YOU AS I NOW CAN HAVE MY SCOUTING.COM FIX EVERY FEW HOURS)
  13. Now please don't take this as me insulting "Black Eagle" b/c the guy is EXTREMELY, and again I am stressing EXTREMELY knowledgeable. BUT #1 he is not an official source of information,i.e. a national BSA publication or website, ( although he does use them a lot as citations) and #2 he does sometimes have incorrect information posted, i.e the World Crest had the requirements removed from it in 1989, not 1991 as he posts on his site ( know this this well b/c I was about to earn a WC when we were told on the trip that national had just lifted the requirements and now anyone can wear it). Again the guy is a good source to get info, and in fact can give you the BSA pub with the info, but sometimes he is incorrect.
  14. Don't have the Summer camp standards, but I bet they are similar to CSDC standards M11. A current (within 12 months) health history (Parts A and C of form 34605) for each camper, leader, and staff member is on file in camp during the camping period. Now while the camp standards do not state who has access to the medical records, in NCS they state that only the CHO (camp health officer)will have access to those records. Now according to the CHO Training ppt I have, "The camp director and unit leaders are informed about campers with limitations so that the appropriate staff members can be alerted." and "information is shared only with the camp staff members who need to know, and they are instructed to handle this important information in a discrete and proper manner."
  15. Great question. I know that in the lodge I came up in, Chilantakoba 397, there was an excellent relationship that did cool down over time. But it was revived some when we had an elder come in and help teach us how to dance after several years of no dancers. While the regalia for ceremonies was Plains, there was a chapter trying to replicate Houma regalia. The relationship was mutual in that we did have lodge members and former lodge members helping them with their bid for federal recognition.
  16. Mamasita, Problem is my understanding is that nothing is suppose to go around the World Crest per WOSM. Then again the BSA is WOSM's red-headed step child....
  17. CONGRATULATIONS! Glad it went well.
  18. A few disclaimers 1) I am not a lawyer. 2) it's been over 15 years since I did my report. If memory serves, the information in the "Red Book" ( sorry that is what I've heard it call and will continue to call it despite the media) is extremely confidential, with highly restricted access to it. The information, if released by the BSA freely, could cause numerous slander lawsuits. The only time information has been released is when a court order has been issued, and that subpoena protects the BSA from any type of slander lawsuits. Please remember that not everyone who is removed form the BSA has done something to warrant an arrest. The BSA will remove any leader on just the accusation of anything by a scout. Trust me I've seen it happen once. Although the leader was found to not have done anything wrong or inappropriate, the leader was still removed from Scouting and placed in the book. So releasing the information would open the BSA to a lawsuit from the leader.
  19. Back when I worked supply, we had 1 unit that was out of the country in the TransAtlantic Council that we did orders for, yep they called us instead of Charlotte. part of the reason was that we sold advancement to them with paperwork. Anyway what that unit did was buy the estimated number of BL and pins for the entire year. As for advancement, they bought "replacements" for all the boys that earned them the previous year. That way they had a stock of them to be given out as earned AND saved money. So another option could be to bulk buy the belt loops and pins as they are not restricted. Any not used that year could be stockpiles in the unit's "WARCHEST" of rank advancement and awards.
  20. CPA best thing about MACSCOUTER.COM is most of the advancement, belt loops etc haev workbooks the scouts can download.
  21. From this website http://usscouts.org/advance/cubscout/sports/hiking.asp Hiking Safety Rules: * Always tell someone where you are going and when you will return. * Never hike alone or at night; always use the buddy system. * Dress properly for the weather and environment. * Wear sun and insect protection. * Take an extra pair of socks in case you need to change. * Obey traffic signs and signals. * Avoid hiking along roadways. * Stay on the trail. * Be alert to your surroundings. * Don't litter as you hike. * Be alert to dangerous animals, insects, and plants. Never touch a wild animal. * Take 1 pint of water for each hour you will be hiking. Never drink untreated water.
  22. EDITED: Sorry wrong reply(This message has been edited by Eagle92)
  23. As someone else mentioned, belt loops and sports pins are not restricted items and the therefore do NOT need an advancement report. I would ask to speak to the manager of your local council's distributorship as it may be a new employee or one who was not trained properly. IF your council does require ARs for them, a few options exist. 1 order from Scoutstuff.org as they are available there without the paperwork 2) order from another local council and 3find the nearest nationally owned Scoutshop and order from them. Service is usally faster and better from a shop than the warehouse in Charlotte.
  24. 2cub Late 1980s, early 1990s, apporx 88 or 89. I remember b/c we has a physician in the troop, either a MC or ASM as we held both roles during his tenure. He use to give us free physicals and used to do them alone with no other adults to respect the privacy of the youth. Then YP came along and he needed to have another adult with him to do the physicals. This led to a bunch of us older making the comment " what ya mean Doc needs someone else with him, he's a good Irish Catholic with 11 kids and 1 on the way, he aint gonna do anything to us." The records being discussed is something I know a little about. I actually did a report on them while an undergrad, and unfortunately had to inform my SE about someone who was put into them. Never heard or read them called the "Perversion Files" until this article. I believe they were referred to as the "Red Book" or maybe hte "Black Book" ( it's been over 15 years since I did that report)and I beleive they dated further back than the 1960s. If memory serves, all leaders applications were compared against these records to prevent folks who should't be a leader from being a leader.
  25. Well I've heard that it's only for a brief time, but I've seen nothing in stone about it. Plus with so many people gluing things onto the uniforms these days in stead of sewing it on, You will be seeing them in the future. What i would really like is the cool JAMBO ring that they are selling to jambo participants.
