Training needed to take Webelos camping ?
Eagle92 replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Camping & High Adventure
West, Agree with ya. If you follow the book to the letter, everything is inblocks, so theoretically a trained former TCDL would only need to attend that part of the CSDL ttraining. However i have heard of a district doing a combined TCDL-WDL specific training. -
Acco, The reason why First Class is no longer restricted is b/c decided to use that specific pin as a hat pin for the expedition and campaign hats. Youth wear that one, adults wear the pewter one. The removed the restriction in '96 or 97 and I made the comment to my manager that it was a mistake. They should make the rest of the ranks the same size as the First Class pin and authorize the rank pins to be worn. Oh well. As for the price, I beleive that's a typo.

Training needed to take Webelos camping ?
Eagle92 replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Mom, Some councils are going to IOLS instead of OWL right NOW as IOLS covers everything that OWL does, and then some. In fact I've seen an unoffical syllabus that a district put together that combines OWL and IOLS in the same weekend. Only difference is arrival times and length of time spend on some skills. Me personally I prefer WDLs and SMs takign the Same outdoor training. it better preps teh WDLs inthe BS program, which is the purpose of Webelos. Also it preps the WDL to be an ASM theyonly need to take SM fast start and specific as they got TIS and IOLS under their belt;) -
Yep they can be worn.

From what I've seen they are revising the outdoor training courses adn some will be mandated. BALOO will be the same, and I believe, stressing BELIEVE, required for CM and ACM positions when mandatory comes out. I think I read that at a pilot council's website. Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders and Intro to Outdoor Leaders Skills will be combined into one course and WILL BE MANDATORY for WDLs, AWDLs, SMs, ASMs, and Crew Advisers and AAs who have outdoor programs. that came form a national training update from national a few months back -
Well oldest son and I found out we were selected to represent the council at the BSA Parade this Summer. Talk about 1 happy Cub Scout. Ok dad was happy too
-
IT'S ABOUT TIME THEY RESTORED THE NECKER SIZES!!!!!! (yEP I AM SHOUTING AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS) But the removal of some colors does concern me as you do have some units that go back 90+ years and have been using the same color neckers, even the current small neckers, for all these years.

Momma 1, Camp outs usually have the same routines, i.e. travel, set up, activity, meals, campfire, game time, etc. Sp teh basics should be covered. Also the older youth teaching the classes shouldn't have a problem with the repetition, as it gives them a chance to practice their skills, both the activity and teaching, and teach folks new ones.

Fire, #1 Welcome to the Forums! #2 take a deep breath and RELAX. #3 Step away from your son and let him figure it out with his PL and SPl. Seriously welcome to Boy Scouts and please realize it is 110% Different than Cub Scouts. There are no den leaders, rather YOUTH serve as patrol leaders. Adults are there to ADVISE NOT LEAD. If your troop looks like organized chaos, then it is working. the Patrol Method IS organized chaos, and one of the hardest parts of being an adult leader is watching the youth FAIL, LEARN FROM IT, AND GROW (all caps are for emphasis). IMHO the Patrol Method is the hardest part about Scouting, esp for former CS Leaders.

I concur with those that think an apology for not believing the OP are warrented. I also beleive the matter should end as he IS an Eagle and congratulations are in order.

Ima, You are referring to the mom's pins, which are miniture rank pins and are not restricted. This is the link to the parent's pins. http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=GIFTS&c3=JEWELRY&c4=&lv=3&item=001BSP What is being refered to si the actual rank pins that have been in esistence since 1910. One example is the Life rank Pin below http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=GIFTS&c3=PINS&c4=&lv=3&item=91

I can understand why some folks need to leave early form a trip, eps. since my oldest will need to leave early all next year for religious classes which are mandatory for his grade. I have a few folks in my chapter who also belong to my church, and they too leave early for the classes. BUT they work doubly hard to make up for leaving early AND in respect to the OA asctivities, the fun really starts after the Ordeal Ceremony, so they are actually missing out ont hemost fun. That said the requirements state overnight, so it doesn't count. Nor would it count towards OA requirements, the various national campign awards, of Camping MB.
-
yep they are worn in lieu of the patch. I personally would wear it on the smokey bear, if I was a youth. What I find funny si that according to the IG, all scouts, irregardless of rank, are suppose to wear the First Class Pin on the expedition and campaign.

I am actually planning on using dutch ovens at CSDC. Grant you the leaders will do the bulk of the work in ref to the fire and coals, but why not?

As a former chapter adviser, I say postpone until the new guys can get to know the eligible scouts better. I know of an instance,, back when they had % limits in the process, where the election was held a week after crossover, which doubled the size of the troop. 2 folks were eligible, one was the brother of one of the new Scouts, the other was the ASPL. the big brother had already expressed a non-interest in the OA to his peers, and the older scouts knew not to vote for him. BUT the younger brother talked his friends into voting for Big Brother, who got a majority of the vote, was elected, called out, and never went though an Ordeal.

Safeguarded Wood Badge Discussions?
Eagle92 replied to Scoutfish's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
J, I was told that WB21C no longer qualifies for CE credit like the old WB course. Has that changed? While I know my job doesn't have the budget to pay for me to got ot WB, esp after goign to 3 conferences with in a month, I may be able to get them to pay my salary to go IF I can get some CEs out of it. -
I went with my old hat from CS as it can be used for 3 years. Now he does wear his Camp Bonner hat that I got him at a family camp from time to time. I got him that hat since just before the name change to Camp Boddie. Now I did get him a Wolf hat recently as he may be needing it for the parade in Washington DC. "...but she'll aways be Bonner to me."

2cub, You know I'm a newbie to the NCS Stuff, but it was my understanding that all district and council events needed to follow those standards. I even asked about this during break, and was told that and that if a volunteer isn't in charge, then usually a pro with the cert is. Again I'm new to the CS side of things. In reference to my first post, I'm giving my technical answer. However I agree qwith you that it should be the weeklong event. Hence the "traditionally...." Now in reference to good reasons, I know that my council calls several 1 day events "Day Camp," just ask SCTDAD about that one as we had a thread about it last year. It can be confusing Also some of our day camps are only 2-3 hours at nite for 3-5 days. Some folks would actually spend more time outdoors at an all day event on a Saturday than at someof the district's CSDCs. I think that's why out prices are so low at $55. Trust me I am pinching pennies. Once comment I just picked up on, there is no where in the book that says a TC must earn this award. What's wrong with earnign it as a Wolf?

Joking aside, I do not condone foul language, and vividly remember the dressing down that I received from my SM, the only time I ever remember him getting directly involved in a situation rather than the SPL. I also agree with E-mtns about it being a problem retaining folks, eps. once parents hear about it. But I also know that when you have adults somewhat removed, it can rear its ugly head, especially if an accident is involved.Seen it happen as a youth, and corrected scouts about it as an adult.
-
I am assuming that she refers to common 4 letter words, or Carlin's 7 words. One trick I picked up when I was in the UK was to curse in other languages, specifically Finnish, Croation, and Russian. Only time I ever had a problem was that one prof who spoke Croatian in college... but that's a different story .
-
Also any district or council level overnighter would qualify for the residetn camp expereince according to NCS standards.
-
Gary, Around here, the OA is known for their ceremonies, and SCTDAD can correct me if I am wrong, but his chapter's ceremony team said they could do it then backed out at the last minute. Also while ceremonies may not seem important, on the CS level they are vitally important. This is usually a CS's first introduction to the OA (let's face it we are usually in the background IF we are helping at CS events), and it really needs to be inspiring. National just put out info about how the OA could do more service at the CS level, and ceremonies was mentioned if memory serves.
-
Technically speaking yes it would. According to NCS any district or council day only activity wold be considered a day camp and fall under CSDC standards. HOWEVER traditionally speaking CSDC is the weeklong event.

Bando, You reminded me abotu what I did at Jambo one year. I made a bunch of woggles adn was tradign them like hotcakes. I tried to give a bunch away, key word TRIED, to a group of Japanese Girl Scouts, but wound up with a bunch of beautiful GS patches from Japan and a 73 WSJ keholder.
