  1. Sctdad, Cool, I just hope that they don't double book that weekend as currently scheduled. I hate missing Fellowship, but an Arrowman's first duty is to his unit, and mine WILL be at the Camp Charles Family Campout.
  2. Looked through my collection and found from the 89 Jambo a 3 piece patch. The Jambo CSP, Lodge flap, and partial temp patch formed a giant patch. While the lodge flap and temp patch could be worn together to show a scene, the flap had an indentation for the CSP, and the CSP completed the scene. Hard to describe, but oh so cool to see.
  3. EMB, Since you are THE MAN with reference to Venturing, do you know which trained strip is suppose to be worn? Also do you know if they will eb coming out with a green and white trained strip like I've seen in the unofficial catagory, but works alot better than the tan and red?
  4. certainly would make it easier to procure uniform items. Speaking of which, maybe I should wear my Sea Scout uniform in the parade in July? HMMM.....
  5. NOPE. i've seen pcoket and flap combos for lodge anniversaries and jambo as well. Now I've heard that one lodge made a full pocket patch to go with the lodge flap for dancer team and ceremony team members.
  6. I haven't heard anything either, but I admit i am notas involved in Sea Scouts as I was. perhaps seascout.org has the info?
  7. Lisa, there is a world of info not only in lodges, but also onthe net and powwow circuit. Plus go to any large OA event, ie a conclave or a NOAC, and you will meet some awesome resources. Now grant you I've seen some folks do it wrong, and started off the wrong way initially. BUT after meting folks and talking to them, I was put onthe right track.
  8. I agree that some patches do go overboard. But sometimes there is some symbolism in the pacthes. I know one of the patches I designed had 2 elements unique to the council, specifically historic landmarks, and on another the OA sash on the patch is designed to look like the MS river.
  9. My council this past weekend had that belt loop available as an activity. I didn't sit throught he class with my son as, HE IS MY SON 9caps for emphasis) and wanted to go Rowing, Climbing. But I was told that the instructor put on one heck of a good class working on the BL and some of the pin requirements.
  10. No SctDad, not for your pack. BTW We got a pakc going to the June Family Camp b/c of the run on we did last weekend.
  11. I have a feeling that when my son becomes a BS, he will NOT want me as a MBC as I would probably be harder on him than someone else. As his TCDL, I know at times I expect more out of him than his peers, and at other times I need to get him to slow down and let his peers catch up.
  12. 397 at one time had an excellent relationship with the Houma of LA. It waned a little, esp when we had a group of dancers decide to do their own thing. Lodge had to disband the dance team. When I was there, we were slowly rebuilding the relationship. Current lodge is in the same boat. BUT one of the old AIA advisers is back and the relationships are getting reestablished. Heck 2 of our dancers are not part of a local drum, and may be on the next album. It just so happens that that drum came about from talks amongst folks on the front porchof the visitor's center at the local camp, or so I am told.
  13. Sail, When did they take the 'bugs" off the dixie cups?
  14. Gunny, Be advised that just the accusation of an impropriety can get someone removed from scouting. While you are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, as a private organization BSA's #1 concern is protecting its youth members, and therefore will remove someone from adult leadership just on an accusation. Seen it happen first hand with a good friend.
  15. No scout, except driver's son in the front seat. Not the case BSA banned fixed bladed knives. Nope, although some council's have and some municipalities and counties have outlawed them ( I wonder how they cook in those cities and counties.) BSA banned electronics at events.
  16. Gary, the point of bringing up Varsity was to show that the LDS does have major influence in the BSA, to the point of having a program created specifically for their needs. While any CO can use it, it is used mostly by LDS churches, if they even use it, and has not been incorporated well into the rest of Scouting. This is seen with lots of complaints about how the Varsity program is supported and teh poor quality of literature on the program. Now that may change since BSA has redone the training program, and I've read a new Varsity training manual is out there.
  17. Gary, Originally Varsity was strictly sports, no HA activities. The HA activities came about b/c of the Venture Crews, now called Patrols, in the 1990s. Venture took the concept of the Varsity letter, renamed the Varsity/Venture letter, and instead of using the sports pins, had Venture Crew/Patrol members work on the HA pins. Eventually it was opened up to allow Varsity scouts to work on the HA pins as well, and Venture Crews/Patrols to work on the sports pins as well. Now there is some discrepancy on whether current Venture Patrol members can earn the pins or not. Ther was an article in BL saying no they cannot, but the letter is still called "Varsity/Venture Letter" in the IG and none of the BSA literature address it now. Not that it really matter as in my experience no one was really interested int he letter and pins. I created a HA program at a summer camp incorporating the pin program, an there were no takers. Also in the 5 councils I've been in, I've never seen anyone with the V or pins at any of the ceremonies I've attended.
  18. J described the conditions of some of the other LDS units in my council that I've been told about. Now in reference to LDS changing the program due to financial contributions, I was told by several sources that the sole reason why Varsity Scouts were created was for LDS units. And those sources consisted of pros at PDl-1 and an LDS pro I went through PDL-1 with.
  19. Base, Understand completely, and was in your shoes until I got on CSDC staff last year and heard about what some districts call day camp. Then going to NCS to be a PD at CSDC this year was a real eye opening experience. In reference to my council's event this past weekend, the national standards were used and several months of planning went into it. I hate to say it, but I think more planning and resources went into it than CSDC. I know that my TCs that went spent more time there than they would at some of the other district's CSDCs, being htere for a total of 12 hours compared to a total of 6-10 hours at one of the day camps.(This message has been edited by Eagle92)
  20. I'll be honest I know nothing about NAYLE. BUT if it is anything like its predecessor, NYLTC, it will be an AWESOME experience. Several of my youth staff at JLT went through it and had a BLAST!
  21. Eng, As I stated previously inthe post, the purpose of the files was to cross refernce new leader applications in a time before computers. Also the reason for the "secrecy," i.e. why national wanted a subpeona for them before releasing them, is that not everyone in those books were removed and arrested. Polcie records are public records, but in the example I have given the leader was removed from scouting, investigated, and no evidence supporting the "scout's" accustaion was found. However just the accusation was enough to remove the leader and keep the leader out of Scouting.
  22. Usually you need to be in a POPR for 4-6 months minimum, and there is no max time, depending upon the rank involved. So 1 week will not cut it. Personally i woudl create a permanent Venture patrol, model it off the old Leadership Corps, and have them not onkly running activities for hte troop throughout the year, but also a few activities on their own throughout the year.
  23. John reminded me about the stakes. I f memory serves, one problem was that the LDS unit was in a stake that had the bulk of its units in another council. I was not asked to say what I've heard, so I will not go there. But you can guess how other LDS units were like from talking to others. Now comparing LDS units to RC, Bap., VFW etc units. again there is a mixed just like the LDS units, but overall they are more involved than the LDS units I've expereinced. I think John hit the nail on the head. The most active LDS unit I ever had exepereince with was one you couldn't tell they were an LDS until you saw them leave saturday nite. Their bishop is an Eagle, 3 beader, and was district chairman.
  24. I second Crazy Crow! Most of ny supplies for my Native American dance regalia came from them.
