  1. just make sure to keep copies of everything as some councils have problem with records.
  2. It may not be from an official source, but I think the word is about to come out officially. Went to MyScouting.org, logged and, and this message is posted in bold and red. YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING: Volunteers who wish to take the Youth Protection Training Course in E-Learning may do so at any time. You do not need a member ID to take this course. Click on E-Learning and select Youth Protection Training from the General tab. You will receive a certificate of completion. When you add your member ID to your Profile, the course completion will be updated for your council. making aquery there.
  3. 2 things will make it easier. 1) mandatory training being requiremed by national 2) Specific Leader training being offered on the OLC website June 20th, or there abouts.
  4. To be honest, the first time I have ever seen a real life Varsity Scout, was this past weekend when an LDS team was using the camp I was at. Since Varsity was created, I believe in '83 or thereabouts, I have never seen one.
  5. How about this link from national http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/13-083.pdf EDITED: this site has the tracking sheet http://retentioninscouting.org/Pack_Trainer_Award_Knot_Requirements_Record.pdf(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  6. Peri, What my pack does is issue compasses to the 2nd year webelos. Gets them pumped to move up to the troop.
  7. I'm the one who made the comment, and it is based upon things commented here on the board, as well as talk at district anc council functions. It seams as if whenever someone is passed over at a BOR, it always goes up the food chain, and the scout wins the appeal. Again this is hearsay as I have only sat on a BOR once in at least 11 years. That said, I agree that things should be caught WAY ahead of time. I also liked the practice my troop did up until '89 or so, whether it was legit or not I don't know, but we had a member of the PLC, or Leadership Corps (in my troop LC members were part of the PLC)sit on and chair BORs up to First Class with adult committee members. I remember one real "interesting" BOR, and the scout couldn't deny the rationale for the denial. Especially since some of my patrol members were victims of the prank.
  8. OGE, Problem is that even if you do have issues with someone who is not living up to the Oath and Law, if they appeal the BOR's decision, they usually win.
  9. Trainer, You'll be surprised, especially since the new uniforms don't look good enough for COHs in some people's opinion. Prior to the CUs comign outi had exec board members getting them. And of course the pros want them, esp. now. While I have a bunch of the old uniforms, I have been known to wear the new one to ceremonies. grant you they were worn sans the lower legs and with knee socks....
  10. Depending upon which cemetary in the county, Scouts will be out tomorrow at 8AM, 8:30AM, or 9AM to do Flags Out for Memorial Day. In years past, after school let out they would meet at the cemetaries to collect flags. Luckily this year the school board chose to let them off.
  11. Joe, Can't really give recommendations on which tent to use b/c my 2 man tent is realy old and they no longer make it. Eureka si the brand and I love it. A few things to look for in a tent. #1 make sure it has a tarp to go with it, that is what keeps the bulk of the rain out. #2 Depending upon what type of tent you get, i.e. family camping tent, weekend camping, or backpacking, you may want to invest in a "bathtub bottom" which is a heavier, more waterproof bottom. #3 Always, stress ALWAYS, use a some type of ground sheet, sometimes called a foot print, underneath the tent with the extras tucked under the tent. It adds an extra layer of waterproofing, needed in SE LA and environs, and by tuckign it all under the tent, prevents rainwater from going under the tent and over the ground sheet. As for books, BSHB and Field Book have some good info. Also take Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills training. If you are in SELAC, I know Bill just passed away, but his devotion and work on providing quality training did make an impact and some of the best trainers I encountered were in SELAC. Finally if you are in Metairie, stop by the Scout Shop and ask for Justin. He's been there, done that, and can offer you a world of advice.
  12. Joeleaux, A few questions for ya, Tiger or Green Wave fan? Also are you going to Camp V Bar or Camp Avondale? If you are in Metairie, go to the scout shop and talk to Justin. He's been there, done that, and can give yo a good understanding of what you will need.
  13. or as easy to find as 50 feet of shoreline, 2 gallons of prop wash, 10 feet of fallopian tube, etc etc. And these comments are coming from someone who works with these type of systems daily.
  14. jami, have you looked at Staging Den and Pack ceremonies? Googling cub Scout graduation ceremonies may help too. Now if you want something customized, tell me how many folks are involded and what positions they hold, how long you want it, and what type of theme you want and have props for.
  15. Acco, That's why I said wait until he's 21, unless the troop is going to die immediately ( which I seriously doubt). But I read stories of WWII era scouts without SMs. I also heard of troops that have had SMs and ASMs deploy overseas where the SPL is running the show while a new leader is 'voluntold"
  16. hendricks, Varsity Scouts earn Eagle as their highest rank. Now there is the Denali Award that they can earn, but like the current Ranger Award, it is not rank, so it doesn't have a knot.
  17. While I agree at times a push along the trail may be needed to get a scout out of a rut, overall they need to be a self motivated guy. As for going for 100 MBs, if that's whay he wants, go for it. While I didn't try that, I wen tfor the HA stuff, whatever floats his boat.
  18. Buf, you forgot Hornaday Award as that is also a youth award.
  19. Well I think everyone knows my views on the topic of young scouters taking on responsibility as I have major issues with folks who look only at age as the "expertness" factor
  20. Merly, I must respectfully disagree on the Facebook question. I know of instances in which potential employers have used it, and other social media in the hiring process. heck I know of one young lady who uses the net for potential suitors. If its on the 'net, its public.
  21. My advice to him would be to NOT be the de facto SM until he turns 21. Let him be an ASM, get some "On The Job Training" as well all the required stuff before become SM at 21. Also work on theose organizational skills IT IS A BIG RESPONSIBILITY! ( caps for emphasis) Not saying he cannot do it, quite the opposite in fact, but to keep things legit, get him trained, and get his organizational skills on par with the job. Sorry you are losing him, but good for him!
  22. Well I'm reading the paper today and saw a very interesting announcement. A young man earned his Eagle who had dropped out of his troop several years ago b/c his dad was pushing him. And when I mean pushing, I mean PUSHING, to the point he got fed up and quit.Luckily mom talked some sense into dad, and they let the son leave scouting. This was when he was 13. 3 years later at 16, he decided on his own that he wanted to get back involved in Scouting and earn Eagle. Not an easy task for a 16 year old 2nd Class Scout to get Eagle. BUT without dad pushing him, he had fun, busted his own butt, and got Eagle. Grant you he was like me, completing everything before 18 except the EBOR, about a week after 18 b/c of scheduling, but he Completed it and had fun. What I find interesting is that A) nobody really asks how old I was when I got Eagle, except new parents and that is on occasion. Seems that if you tell parents you are an Eagle, they are happy to have a good role model and don't care about age you earned it B) Most Eagles who get it from 13-15 tend to leave Scouting altogether, and C) Those Eagles who earned it from 16-18 usually have some awesome Scouting stories about their adventures ( let me tell you about my trip to Canada.... ).
  23. Nick, A wise man who very recently passed away told me that it's not the number of the knots that you wear, but the service you provide to the youth. I admit when I first became a district committee member at 21 I became a little "knot happy." I had my three from youth, and wasn't concerned about knots when I was only in my troop, b/c it wasn't a big deal, and everyone knew me and my KSAs. Problem came about when I joined the discomm as OA chapter adviser and very, very few folks took me seriously. Long story short, i though that if I had a few more knots, people would take me seriously. I earned my STA, and guess what, nothing changed. Those who didn't take me seriously still did not, and those that knew me did. Just relax and have fun in your new role as an adult.
  24. TD, This type of uniform was made due to the complaints from volunteers, and more importantly from supply's POV the professionals, that the CUs did not look professional enough to be worn at ceremonies, and again form the pro's POV when meeting with prospective donors. Hence they are out and willnot be going away. Now if they would only listen to those of us who want knee socks back
  25. Yep I read it and Skeptic beat me to point. Jeal is the only one to come to that conclusion, and he used late 20th century thinking and applied it to late 19th early 20th century values. Any good historian knows you cannot do that: take your values and concepts and apply them to the past. Jeal is also the one to comment on the number of letters from a certain young lady that BP kept until his wife destroyed them, she being the jealous type. Jeal also notes that there was at least one marriage proposal, and the rejection devastated BP. Jeal also notes the reaction that BP had in at least one case of a homosexual leader, possibly two (read the book a long time ago for a philosophy paper, don't ask ) IMHO Jeal doesn't prove that BP was a repressed homosexual. But thanks for reminding me that Jeal did state that, I forgot about that.
