  1. Emb, It's partially correct. If memory serves, you could wear numbers or unit patch. But the patch had to have specific info on it, i.e. Ship's name and #. Again if memory serves. I'll look it up in my old Sea Explorer manual when I get home. EDITED: I prefer unit numbers b/c it does prevent confusion, esp when you have 2 ships in the same council with the same name! My last ship and another used "Queen Ann's Revenge." Eventually my ship was renamed "Discovery," but all the vessals still fly either the Jolly Roger or Blackbeard's flag. 2. Thanks Emb for some details. I can believe "Microboy" caused some problems. I know that he raised about 40 new DEs blood pressue that caused some unScoutlike commentary from them when he annouced the Venturing Silver Award was going to replace Eagle as the BSAs top award. I was one of those. Also heard some other things about his mangement style.
  3. Growing up, my troop had a $2/month troop dues, later upped to $3/month. That included charter fees, Boys' Life, advancement, etc. Mothly trips varies based upon the cost of the trip. We also did one fundraiser/year that had two components: a craft fair at a local plantation. For the Scouts, we did cleanup and money from that went into individual accounts. The troop also ran a concession stand selling hot dogs and lemonade. That money went into troop coffers to pay for supplies and equipment.
  4. SB, Zip off the legs and wear knee socks, then there'll be no problem at meetings
  5. Moose, Once upon a time, YPT was one of those that you took once and that was it, no need for recert every two years, unless a council didn't input the data that you attended the course. That happened to me and if memory serves when I last took YPT in 2000 or 2001 in the online format, there was no expiration date on the training. So for some of us old fogeys, having a 2 year expiration on YPT is new. I will repeat some questions I have asked elsewhere. #1 Will Venturing YPT, a separate course, meet tyhis requirement? #2 Will Camp Staff YPT, again a separete course, aslo meet this requirement? #3 Will the YPT Quize meet this requirement? I've heard yes it will and no it won't. I have mixed emotions on this new requirement. On one had I do see it making recruiting leaders more difficult. That will be challenging, esp. with packs. On the other hand, I have dealt with YP issues on both a volunteer and professional basis, and know how important it is.
  6. Every council does things different apparently. When I was in SELAC, I was given the STA certificate and knot; medal and device I had to buy on my own. Current council just gave me a Dist. Comm. Key cert. Not a big deal as I already had the SM KEy knot from a used shirt I bought. Haven't gottent he device for that one yet as I no longer wear devices; they keep popping off.
  7. RK, BALOO will be unaffected, and according to the March and April Training Updates from national, it looked as if the merger with WeLOT and IOLS would occur this year, but according to May Update, it's delayed. HOWEVER, my district is going ahead and inviting WDLs to IOLS.
  8. FB is something my council has embraced. Several of the districts have a FB page, the Council has a FB page in which the latest news is announced, i.e. the new YPT requirements, the lodge has one, and 2 of the council's camps have one.
  9. Info, Are you certain? I see COPE Instructor as H09, something I've taught, as COPE Dirtector as H43. They also have Red Cross Instructor in the H category. COPE instructor is something that any cope director can do, COPE Dir. go to NCS for cert, and anyone ccan get certified as an ARC instrutcor via your local ARC chapter. Just out of curiousity, anyone know when did the N series come out, specifically N01 First Aid, N04 CPR, N05 CPR and AED? And finally why isn't their a generic First Aid instructor cert like the ARC Instructor above?
  10. Bac Is this what you are refering to: http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=GIFTS&c3=GIFT_MISC&c4=&lv=3&item=10998 grant you it's a littel long, not the size of teh '94 NOAC toothpick holder, but it is the size I've seen used in my college days John, My SE posted it on the council's FB page.
  11. Bacchus, try CS toothpick holder 2Cub, The following is my opinion. One problem IMHO is that the folks making the decisions in regards to tech don't what they can do with it, or do not undestand it. Best example is the former SE who was put in charge of SCOUTNET in 1998 and had 0 IT experience. Yep the guy didn't know squat, but was put in charge of finding a company and implementing SCOUTNET. Don't know if that's still the case, but I wouldn't doubt it. In reference to the New YPT guidelines, don't know why it came out as fast as it did, but speculation is that the Oregon lawsuit spurred it. I wouldn't doubt it as, again my opinion, Venturing split off of Exploring after a lawsuit. Now I've heard that the split was coming, but was accelerated b/c of the lawsuit. let's face it the literature was rushed out, there were no shorts until 9 months after Venturing came out and pants 2 years after Venturing came out, lot sof errors in the literature, or so I'm told, etc.
  12. Desert, No offical explanation for was given for that or other uniform regs they have come out with recently. Several examples include no OA insignia; no WB beads (understand while underway, but for Bridges of Honor and other events especially since WB is for ALL programs now???? ); no unit numbers on any uniforms; no CSP and knots on adult/QM khaki uniform; no Sea Scout emblem, aka "Bugs" onthe "dixie cup" cup; etc. In reviewing SeaScout dissusions I found this answer from someone on the sea scout uniform committee for some answers. Apparentlythis came out in 2004, and a lot of folks are not happy. Also apparently Ships are not suppose to create their own uniforms anymore, unlike other Venturing units. The reasoning was that no one could seem to get it right. We had Boy Scout red numbers on blue uniforms, black on Khaki, white on Blue work shirts. Etc. National did not make any of them, so the numbers came from a number of unofficial sources. Before Sea Exploring, the unit numbers were optional. To reduce the cost of insignia, which is considerable, it was decided to reduce the insignia that causes the most trouble. Unit numbers and bugs on hats won. The committtee may in the future make unit numbers optional. We need to wait and see. However, if you get two Sea Scouters in a room, n two of them can agree on what the uniform should be. From a National stand point, the uniform varies widely across the country. This is due to the Explorer era when everyone made their own costume.
  13. Well if it has a code, then it maybe an older training that no longer exists. Some older courses pre SCOUTNET do have training codes, i.e. SM Fundamentals, Brownsea 22, JLT, Cub Leader Basic, and Explorer Leader Basic Training among other older courses. So what has replaced it? Again what I cited is the current training courses offered and what currently takes to be trained as a Venturing leader. So as long as they have these, you should be covered. One caveat, some old fogeys who were Exploring Leaders before the Venturing split in 1998 were told at that time that we would be still ocnsidered trained when our Posts became Crews. So you may have 'trained" venturing leaders who never went through Venturing Specific b/c we were told that we didn't have too. I remember being told that 2 times, once at PDL-1 and once at the 98 All Hands conferecne by the then Venturing Director. Hence why i never went through any Venturing Specific training, except the stuff at the conference so that I can get a familiarization with the 'new" program ansd could start crewss. However my records were never corrected, and I've been told that there was no grandfathering in place. So if there are challenges, talk to the council training chair. ADDED: Looking at the link provide and the other trainiing courses in the H series. They all look like additional/ supplementary courses.
  14. Chazz, Where did you get the medals as i've been told they have been discontinued? Eagle92
  15. Well according to this wesbite there is no limit to the number of knots you can wear at one time. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Media/InsigniaGuide/10K.aspx Now I do know that the national Sea Scout committee has put some restrictions on the number and type of knots you can wear, i.e. 6 knots max and AOL knot among others is no longer authorized for wear. Sorry I can't cite the source for that one, but I rememeber AOL no longer being allowed b/c i thought it was funny that Ships Stores has a supply of AOL on white backgrounds as well as navy backgrounds. Bought a white knot for my Sea Scout uni.
  16. Closest HA training the BSA has is POWDERHORN, which is really an intro to HA. According to national found here http://scouting.org/sitecore/content/Home/BoyScouts/Adults/Training/Trained%20Leader.aspx to be considered trained the following must occur Venturing Crew Leaders Venturing crew leaders and assistants must complete Venturing Leader Specific Training, a five-session training course, to be considered fully trained. Venturing crew leaders whose crews have an outdoor program must also complete Introduction to Outdoor Skills training to be considered fully trained. Also according to a training PDF from national daterd 4-22-10 there is no listing for HA training for youth or adults. Link is here http://scouting.org/filestore/training/pdf/What_makes_a_trained_leader.pdf Closest thing to HA I've found is the Passport to High Adventure. Link to a summary is here : http://scouting.org/sitecore/content/Home/BoyScouts/PassporttoHighAdventure.aspx Books is a good resource. never owned one, but had one that was damaged that I looked at. Pretty good info if memory serves.
  17. Nike is correct, the older uniforms are on sale. And do be careful as they are sized incorrectly. I'm an XL, 32L, and heard that the old Switchbacks ran large. I got both L AND XL sizes. Larges are big, but wearable with a belt. XLs swallowed me. Also the length was off.
  18. I went ahead and bought the Guide instead of downloadng the meeting plans from SCOUTING.ORG . I't cheaper to buy it than to down load it and print it out, A SCOUT IS THRIFTY Anyway if you read the introductory stuff, it tells you that the plan is a guide that you can modify to suit local needs. The catch is that you may have to move several meeting plans around as things appear to progress and build upon one another. So that shouldn't be a problem.
  19. Sometimes I'm told that appeals for Scout Spirit have arisen. Again I haven't sat on a BOR in years, but that is what I've been told.
  20. My advice is if it's the Older uniforms made in America you will be good to go on size. My made in Communist China generation 1 Switchbacks were large. I bought them from national when they were on sale, and being told that they run big, bought the Ls and XLs. L are big and I have a 38" waist. XLs swallowed me. Luckily I was able to sell one pair of XLs. Anyone want a pair of Switchbacks, XL waist 32 length, only $15 plus shipping
  21. Just finished my cemetery with my pack, the troop, crew, and 2 other packs. Passed a 2nd cemetary and the scouts were out there as well.
  22. Well I emailed my district K3, and the DE forwarded the email he received on this topic today that contained this memo. This is for real. Packs are going to have some challenges AH CARAMBA!
  23. hend, check out ECCBSA.org and go into training. They came out wiht a training survey that can be turned into council for updating. Doesn't have EVERYTHING, but has all the basics. grant you you may have a scouting addict like myself who took every form of training while in college or as a pro that he could and has WAY too much on his records, but I doubt it.
  24. Short, made a good point. BSA national, as well as a bunch of councils, are clients of Doubleknot. Alkso the memo is supposedly from a ACSE. And the national conference is going on, sooo....
  25. What's interesting is that more and more potential employers and empoyers are looking at FB and other social media. My council didn't hire a few potential DEs b/c of posts and photos on FB. I commented one time about a challenge I was having at work, nothing major just a minor problem with some new responsibilities I got, and my boss found out about it from my post. Luckily it wasn't a major problem, and she understood why i didn't go to her as I thought it was very minor, frustrating, but minor.
