Kill the epalets, move the "smokes" pocket to the right sleeve or remove it alltogether, mandate neckers, and... Make them in the USA.

I am going to throw a curveball into the melee on this topic. In the past, I think up to the late 1940s/ early 1950s, Adults could earn youth rank, inlcuding Eagle. Further they could wear it on their uniform. SSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOO... ... if you have an adult in a vintage uniform from that time period I have no problem with them wearing the rank patch from that time period.

Eagle equating to leadership is all to common, and the scouts will say whatthey think adults want to hear. I'ld ask questions about their first campout with their troop, first summer camp, and how have they grown since. I'ld also ask specificaly about their favorite trip. As for ArrowCorps, I thought that was an outdoor camping expereince combining cheerful service? That's a question, not being snarky.

In reference to functioning uniform, I do think the old Switchbacks, were a step in the right direction. To bad they were not sized properly and national got rid of the leg zippers. Good news is they are now making the neckers larger. Grant you it's not the full square, but it is sized at a half square.

This is an aside. I wear my uniform to RTs, district committee meetings, and other scouting meetings. Soemtimes I have to do errands after these meetings, or stop and get gas. Lots of times I am stopped and asked about the program, what the scouts are doign these days, or hear stories form former scouts and scouters. And as others have posted, I too have been the recipient of other people's generousity b/c of the uniform. I mentioned the plane trip previously. But the best case was when picking up a prescription for a Scout at summer camp from a nearby pharmacy, It was raining and I was run off the road by someone not stopping at a stop sign. i was stuck in the mud and could not get out on my own. Tried everything to get out and was making it worse. Tow truck saw me, stopped, and helped me out. We talked for abotu 5 minutes abotu what I was doing and he refused to bill me, saying he was "only doing my good turn for the day." Only asked that next time I saw someone on the side of the road, I'ld help them out. And he left. EDITED: For got to add I was uniform because I was anticipating being back in time for dinner. That didn't happen.(This message has been edited by eagle92)

May, It's great that you care about yur Scouts, but it is ultimately their decision. Part of Scouting is let them grow, make their own decisions, and accept their consequences. Advancement isn't a goal of Scouting, but a method. I know a bunch of great scouters made it as far as Life. Is not making eagle a regret, yes it is for them. But they got out so much more from Scouting than 'just a pretty badge."

Although I am an old fogey now, as a youth I remember that I wanted excitement and adventure. I wanted to try new things and test myself. When I got Eagle, I asked "What's else is there?" and found Sea Scouts and OA. Maybe it's my genetics, but my kids want the same things: excitement, adventure, and trying new things. And My Wolves want it too.

2 quotes from the "World's SPL" 1) "OUTING is 3/4 of ScOUTING" 2) " Scouting is Outing." You take the outdoors out of the program, and you don't have a program.

Venturing Eligibility for OA - An Idea...
Eagle92 replied to sherminator505's topic in Order of the Arrow
Brotherhood. Summer camp staff as Venturing crews goes way, way back to the Exploring period. heck I was part of 2 posts/crews and 1 ship that all were staff based. The thing is that staff are teaching scouting skills, and hence fall into traditional Scouting as opposed LFL. Now some crews only meet durng the camping season, others meet periodically, and other are very active. -
I liked my old Sm's approach. A gentle reminder that your b-day is coming, or a swift kick to the butt to drop you a nitch or two if you're being a smart aleck about "getting old" when the folks you were PL and ASPL for are gettign Eagle before you. Actually SM just made a comment about some folks following through on their goals and others just coasting. Got me back on track.

Please remember, some troops do talk to their parents and tell them that on scout functions, they are a bystander, let the troop leadership handle problems. So he may have been following protocol.
-
Yep that is an Scouting Myth. BUT it's good practice b/c A) you sometimes get better treatment by folks B) helps with scouts' behavior and C) you are "prepared" for any unexpected fun opportunities. Going to Canada, we wore our uniforms. We got treated very well, getting a few extra packs of peanuts for the trip, drinks on the planer, etc. Also the Ultimate Warrior saw us and signed autographs and took pictures with us. VERY COOL!
-
Now I admit I like the idea of under 21 scouters wearing the patch, just like the Venturers can. Over 21 doesn't matter one way or the other to me. Now I admit I got a lot of swank on my uniform. All of it for a "misspent youth" as Chesty Puller would say . Why do I wear it? To try and inspire the boys, to let them know about what is out there as they grow in scouting. Also I've found on the CS level, it helps ease the concerns of some parents. But like others have said whether you wear everything you have, or believe like our Sea Scout brethren that "less is more," the primary concern for ALL leaders is this: what's best for the boys.

Actually G2SS does prohibit rappelling for CSs,but that is another story. Also if memory serves, BSA certification in Climb On Safety needs to be done. Been a VERY long time since I taught that class, so changes in policy may have been made. The CO via the IH is the ultimate authority with a unit, as long as it doesn't violate BSA Policy. If the CO says You cannot do that, on or off property, then you cannot do it. period and end of story. If a CO says, "No more scouting," guess what, you better start looking for another CO and FAST! ( been there, dealt with that). Now COR, you are the IH's representative. Yuo represent the IH to the unit, to the District, and to the council, being able to attend and vote at district committee and council board meetings. YOu should be meeting on a regular basis with the IH and talkign to them. If they do not understand Scouting, adn the type of activities and training that leaders get ( and make sure you have trained leaders!) then you need to explain it ot them. Good luck

4 gallons over a 24 hour period. In practice that would be about a quart an hour for 16 hours. In my experiences that is easily doable. heck I probably suck down more than that. As for taste, I've been told vitamin C tablets sold in nutrition stores will cut the taste. Haven't tried it though.

Venturing Eligibility for OA - An Idea...
Eagle92 replied to sherminator505's topic in Order of the Arrow
One thing about Cubs and OA, unless Res Camp is a week long, which in the council's I've been in it isn't, they would not be eligible. Now Scouters in a Cub Pack could be eligible IF they meet the camping criteria and are nominated by the district. Had 1 female CM nominated b/c of her work on the District Committee. Unfortunately she didn't want to go through the Ordeal to become a member. -
I used the 4 gallon figure. That was based upon troop policy in SE LA. We had a lot of prior military, as well as reserve military serving as leaders in the troop, and I am assuming that is where it came from as when my JROTC unit did training at NAB Little Creek and MCRD Parris Island, we were constantly told 4 gallons per day by the instructors, corpsmen, and DIs respectively.
-
Maynard, Never judge a book by it's cover. I have had the pleasure of nominating folks for recognitions that were approved and awarded. Some were obvious choices, a few were the types that work behind the scenes and you don't see at all, BUT if they were not there, then the show couldn't happen. Additionally The Skipper's Key application is the only training award that gets turned into National and they send you the medal. Grant you that is one award you do not see a lot of, but that is the policy per Sea Scout.org.
-
I remember being red flagged on a JROTC exercise at NAB Little Creek. So instead of doing the Confidence Course, we played football instead. Corpsman was freaking out. As others have said, the keep is to keep hydrated. 4 gallons of water per day per person is not uncommon.

Jury says Philly eviction illegal; city may appeal
Eagle92 replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
Problem as i see it with a quick lit search for the charter is that the City charter was created/amended in 1952, well after the agreement with the BSA. -
There are arguments for and against going coed. And yes there is research out there on the benefits of single gender education. That's why lots of private schools are single gender. I personally like the local option approach the UK did when they went coed.I saw plenty of mixed troops, and 2 male only troops. Only female only troops I encountered were Girl Guides, although one GG troop did split in half to create a girls only Scout troop a few weeks after leaving my camp

Mike, One site states that "Pack trainers should be trained at a district or council trainer development conference." While it's old here is a link to another job description link to Scouting.org http://old.scouting.org/cubscouts/resources/13-152.pdf I'll be honest I have no idea what the position entails, or what resources are available. Now me, I would have TDC as mentioned above, and EDGE as well. I would work with my District training chair to come up wiht a game plan to get folks trained ASAP, esp. with mandatory training headed our way. YP will be the biggest need as you need it to turn in an application. Finally any Specific trainign you haven't done, I'd do. That way you can do one on one counseling/training as permitted in the BSA.

Sound's like it has been handled. I also give KUDOS, no not Kudus , to Dad for not stepping in. If it was serious enough, and constant, I would have sent the kid home though. I actually knew a troublemaker who was sent home on Day 2 of NSJ. He was in my Ship. Mom was not happy about that, but I can undertand why he was sent home: theft, fighting, and burning troop property ( the troop's US Flag).

I too have never known anyone who quit Scouting b/c of the uniform. Too much camping, sports committments, school committments, boredom, ad nauseum have been used. But I've never heard uniform. As others stated there is a time and a place for uniforms. IMHO meetings is one, as well as formal events. For camping, depending upon whatis going, I like the Class B's I described above ( I do like the Switchback I's material for camping)for some outdoor events, but whenit comes time to trail work, OA service, and my favorite part of the trips as a youth, GAME TIME, cammies are the clothing of choice.

Short, My guess is that since jambo is on a base with it's own weatehr service, the BSA is using its resources and following base precedents. I just hope they don't red flag you in perfectly good football weather
