Woodcraft as Adult Training
Eagle92 replied to Basementdweller's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
SR, People don't misunderstand the new course, people want hte old course back. -
Depends upon #1 if the number is in use already and #2 the council you are in. It appears, stress appears, that in my council, numbers are assigned by location, and that older numbers are held for specific counties and/or areas of the counties. For example, one unit in a town that hasn't had a pack in it for about 12 years was given the town's historic number.

Woodcraft as Adult Training
Eagle92 replied to Basementdweller's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I think a that a Scoutcraft week's worth of training would be nice for those who need it. You take the basics of what you learned in IOLS, and apply it the week or two weekends. Topics/activities to include (but not limited to) the following: Patrol Method Cooking over open fire (no stoves) Orienteering competition Pioneering competition First aid Backpacking Wilderness survival Knife, ax, saw work adn I know I am forgetting a bunch. -
Venturing advancement in Venture Patrols?
Eagle92 replied to sherminator505's topic in Advancement Resources
Correct in that only Venturers can work on Venturing recognition. In reference to the Varsity/Venture letter, there is a lot, stress A LOT, of confusion on this topic as national has not specifically stated that the Varsity/Venture letter can still be earned by a Venture patrol, or the pins by them as well. Also national has not specifically stated they cannot be earned either. Questions have arisen, Scouting magazine has stated one thing, but other BSA literature, some of which published after the Scouting Mag article contradicted the article. Hence the confusion. Brief background on the program. The Varsity letter came out about 1983 with the Varsity program. The pins were sports related, not HA related, and could only be earned by Varsity scouts. When the Leadership Corps program was replaced by the Venture Crew program in 1989 (remember this is pre-Venturing), the Varsity Letter was renamed the Varsity/Venture Letter, and and the HA pins were created for the Venture crews only to earn. Around 1993, The Sports pins could be earned by Venture crews (still pre-Venturing) and the HA pins could be earned by Varsity Teams. In 1998, Venture crews became Venture patrols with the advent of Venturing. Sometime after 1998, all the confusion started coming up about the pins. In my opinion since the letter and pins are not considered advancement, and hence are not restricted items, and since soem BSA publications still show Venture patrol members being able to wear the letter and pins, I would not worry about if Venture patrol members can wear the letter and pins at this time. On a side note, the pins and letters were never popular when I was involved on the troop level, when I started working summer camp y, and when I worked for supply. My troop never used them, even though we probably could have earned a bunch of them. When I created a HA program based upon the requirements for 2 of the pins for summer camp, no one had ever heard of the letter and pins before (hence one reason no one signed up for the program), and the only person to buy the pins while I worked for supply was myself in an attempt to promote the program. -
'Fish, I hope so and hope they are cheaper than PP. $60/person ?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I'm use to the USS ALABAMA and USS KIDD. ALABAMA charges $18/person and KIDD is now $21/person. I do hope it's worht the price

Adults are suppose to wear the pewter, adult universal hat emblem. Scouts, irregardless of rank, wear the First Class Scout rank pin.

To bad teh USS NORTH CAROLINA does not allow overnight sleeping like most of the ships in the Historic Naval Ships Association. My pack is going all the way to Charleston to stay aboard a ship.

My understanding is that this device http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=UNIFORMS&c3=UN_MISC&c4=&lv=3&item=4254 replaced the orginal PH device found here: http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=UNIFORMS&c3=UN_MISC&c4=&lv=3&item=4044

Is Wood Badge just about "the beads"?
Eagle92 replied to John-in-KC's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I admit that I have not taken WB, and when I do it will be basically for the beads and contacts. While I will use the materiel taught in the course, from what I keep hearing it is a lot of what I already get at work. But earning the beads does open up opportunities, i.e. jambo assignments, etc. BUT the most important reason is the contacts I'll make to help provide a quality program. It is one of those events that does bond a patrol together through the shared expereince. BUT I do see a need for a weeklong scoutcraft course that goes beyond IOLS. Belay that last statement, I see a vital, stress VITAL need for a course that covers scoutcraft like the old WB course. I am seeing more and more leaders who have no previous scouting experience and/or military expereince. ILOS is just that, and Introduction, and some need a lot more help. -
I am now coming up with reservations for going coed after this past week. We had 2 female youth staff members, both of whom had their dads also working camp. While one girl was with her dad all the time and some challenges were nipped in the bud, the other was working with her Venturing AA, and there were some issues of the male youth staff hanging around her and not doing their jobs. In reference to female leaders, I had 2. One was awesome, worked with the youth and really made an impression on them. Also got them pumped up about camping. She didn't have kids and was the closest to their age on the adult staff, being in her 20s. The other female leader was older, had kids at camp, and when the kids came to her station, she mothered them. She actually wanted the DCs to build all the projects for the CS,letting the Cubs only paint the projects, b/c it would be 'too difficult for them" So right now I am starting to have some reservations again.

Just give it time. You are doing fine. Just make sure you don't have a pack actiovity the same nite as CSDC. My son was so tired, that as soon as we got home from camp, he took a bath, put on his jammies, and wanted to go to sleep.

Actually the eagle medal can be worn on both the uniform and civilian attire at special occasions. There use to be a drawing of the Eagle medal and civialian attire on the BSA's official website, just can't find it at the moment.

While I am in the same boat, i.e. just finished being a TCDL and moving up to CSDL, I've been around awhile. EXPECT THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE!!!!!!! ( AND YES i'M SHOUTING 'CAUSE IT A FUN TRIP) I just finished CSDC and it was a blast. The new resource book is good. Yes it's different form what we are use to, but it has a very good structure to it. Like any BSA material, modify it to your circumstances. Also if you can, I'd advise a Den Chief as well. Make sure you use him, or her if it's female Venturer, wisely as they are an excellent resource. My DC also worked CSDC with guys form the den and other wolves, and he was OUTSTANDING! Have Fun and relax!

2Cub is correct there is a brief period of time where the will credit you, I believe it's 3 months. After that, you must either A) pay for the missing months, or B) start over. One troop I started didn't have the date I presented the charter to them b/c they were about 5 months late rechartering. Luckily it happened their first year.

My pack does have a FB page and limits who has access to it. Basically the parents of our Cubs, leaders of the Troop and Crew of our CO, and s few of the pros. Basically you have to be invited and/or approved to be a part of it.

One thing I have seen done is the troop creates a menu, buys in bulk, and splits up the supplies to the patrols. Essentially each patrol sends in a proposal of meals to the PLC. PLC votes on it. One adult, the troop QM and patrol QMs got to Sams and buy the food. The food is then divided up amongt th patrols. Gotta be VERY careful doign this as it can easily be made to have the troop Qm do the shopping without hte patrol QMs, taking away form the patrol method IMHO.(This message has been edited by Eagle92)

varies from council to council, as well as SE to SE. I had a company car. My DE was using his car, but now has a company van. Then again he is a program person, so the van is usually filled with camping supplies. Another DE we had received mileage reimbursement. BUT depending where you are located, you can put on tons of miles. One friend of mine's district was less that 25 square miles. Another had 5 large counties in rural NC

"Nut, only b/c Scout Stuff has a sale on them now.

LL, Do not, repeat DO NOT, go there I actually know of one troop where when they do wilderness survival without Webelos present, whatever they can carry on their person is what they bring. Some of the guys are quite ingneious in how they carry things,

talk to your local hobby shops as they can get you deals, and it helps them stay in business, esp when they are a BIG supporter of Scouting . We gave advance warning to the local store and everyone went there. Went to the local soccer field and had a BLAST>>>>>>>>>>>>>>!

I actually use all the pockets on my shirt to store paperwork and what not. As for the "smokes pocket," I do use it to store.... MY COMPASS

Troop Calendar and Lack of interest
Eagle92 replied to Basementdweller's topic in Open Discussion - Program
One thing I saw work to get a reluctant PLC to plan for the year was a cookout/pool party. NO ONE (caps for emph)was allowed in the pool or to eat the hamburgers, until the work was done. SPL's mom had access to a pool and cooked for us. We had a decent calender made within an hour. Another thing that helps, especially if dealign with multiple school/school district calanders, is to use previous years dates that to schedule. When you know X weekend in April is Jr.-Sr. prom every year, and X weekend in March is exams, it does make scheduling easier.
