I've used woolite. Also heard one guy use ivory soap. to clean the expedition hats. I know I was VERY glad to get into Air and Space seconds before the rain hit.

Obama refuses to sign Eagle certificates
Eagle92 replied to GernBlansten's topic in Issues & Politics
This rumor is definitely making the rounds. My son started karate this week, and when the instructor foudn out I was involved in Scouting, asked me if the rumor was true or not. -
Moto, 20 and under would be an ASM, 21 and older can be any position. BSA restricts what roles 20 and under can perform to ADLs, AWDLs, and ASMs. They may also be able to be a ACM, butnot 100% sure about it. They do need Youth Protection training prior to registering. Desert, Actually the uniform was a little big on him. But yes his mom kept the uniform as it was when he turned 18, with SPL patch and Life patch. It was interesting in that he knew only the older scouts, but all of the younger scouts knew of his exploits in the troop He wa a very good role model and SPL.

When to Announce that you are stepping down as Scoutmaster
Eagle92 replied to Thomas54's topic in Open Discussion - Program
My advice is to discuss the matter privately to the committee ASAP and then start looking for a replacement, if you haven't already done so. make sure they get trained and start workign with the PLC ASAP. then start easing out. Please do me a favor though, when one of your scouts has his ECOH, please attend and make it known you will atttend. My SM stepped down between my EBOR and ECOH. He was not planning to attend, and my mom had to call him and beg him to come b/c he meant that much to me. Luckily he showed up. -
Ditto what Desert said. Only one time have I seen someone in uniform that wasn't registered, and that was the Eagle Scout himself. Long story short, the Eagle didn't have his ECOH before joining the USAF. Once he got out 4 years later, he had his ECOH. Unfortunately he didn't stay around with the troop b/c he went away for college. I do believe that he got involved in Scouting there though.

Beav, No problems. You did get me thinking though, and that is a good thing. Yep I talk a lot about scouting and my experiences. I've been very fortunate and have had a bunch. I try my best to be like BP at Brownsea; telling stories of his adventures to inspire youth. This past year I've dealt with one of the most inquisitive age groups: Tigers. I want them to grow physically, mentally, and morally. They want excitement and adventure, yes even at this age. I try to use my stories to inspire them, telling them that there is so much more out there to do, but things go one step at a time. But maybe I am over doing it? EDITED: Need to add that you are 100% in that I need to support what they want to do.(This message has been edited by Eagle92)

it appears that national is getting rid of a bunch of their Sea Scout insignia, or as it is still labeled "Sea Explorer" I ordered some stuff from national, specifically the cover buttons, only to find out their are the wire, not the screw type. Also discovered that national has a bunch of SS stuff on clearance, including those buttons, so I cannot return them. As for Ship's Stores, THEY ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!! (yes I'm shouting as they are that good!) The only problem I've had with them is that they are on the west coast and shipping can cost as much as an order for me.

My troop didn't do jokes, instead they told stories about he Eagle some of his "Learning Experiences" along the trail to Eagle. I had a mighty fine roast that nite.

Venturing Eligibility for OA - An Idea...
Eagle92 replied to sherminator505's topic in Order of the Arrow
Sherm, You would be surprised at the amount of camping some traditional ships do. I know my ship as a youth, which was not a traditional ship at all, did a weeklong cruise. We slept aboard ship and on an island. While we didn't earn the long cruise award ( 2 weeks of cruising) we did do the 50 miler award. -
In referecne to starting up a ship, the very best of luck. Ships are some of the most expensive things to keep going. BUT ships are the best program in scouting IMHO.

Venturing Eligibility for OA - An Idea...
Eagle92 replied to sherminator505's topic in Order of the Arrow
'23 The national, stress NATIONAL, sea scout uniforms do not allow OA insignia on them. And to be honest I can understand b/c there is no pocket flaps on the SS crackerjacks. No flaps, no button holes for temp insignia (hence temp insignia is verboten on the SS uniform)etc. When I get my new shirt, it will follow the new national policies to the letter. However I have seen OA insignia on local ship's uniforms. Heck I got one on my old ship's uniform and that is because the OA lodge founded the HA sea base the ship was affiliated with, (it is also the only unit I ever knew of with every member and leader being a Vigil Honor member of the OA). The ship's number was the lodge's number, and everyone wore their Vigil flap on their uniform. I also have seen OA sashes at OA events, just as I have heard about WB beads being worn by WB staffers in Sea Scout uniforms, despite also being verboten. The closest thing to OA recognition that Sea Scouts have is a local recognition in SR7, the Order of the Golden Dragons. CArdinal Wardroom has more info on it. -
Deacon, I must respectfully disagree as i believe the current BSA policy for CS, BS, and Venturing leaders is best; being able to wear all of them IF you want. I admit I got a few unis with all the stuff on, and I got a few with nothing on, including my three most precious awards of Eagle, AOL, and Youth Rel. The knots do represent dedication to scouting, i.e. the various training and service awards, and achievement, the youth awards and a few adult ones. When I became a TCDL, my uniform had all my knots on it, and it was a reassurance to the parents that here was someone who cared about Scouting and the kids, and knew what he was doing (if they only knew that was only two was from the CS program as a youth ) The knots and other patches have been used to start conversations and motivate scouts. I've had some great opportunities in Scouting, and I would love for those I work with to have those same opportunities. Telling my 'scouting tales" is something that I love to do, esp. with Webelos getting ready to cross over, beacsue it shows them that with scouting, the possibilities are truly boundless.

Ships, like all Venturing units, can create their own uniforms. That's a continuation from the Exploring days. So a ship can create their own uniform. I've seen ships wearing only polos, ships wearing modified USCG uniforms, etc. I've also seen photos of very well established ships continuing some of the traditions that the new national sea scout uniforms no longer allow, i.e. bugs on covers and unit numbers. The uniform link I sent is THE national uniform. If you attend any regional or national events, i.e. Sea Badge, NSJ, WSJ, Koch Cup, etc, Sea Scouts and leaders MUST be in one of those uniforms, usually the dress whites. Thankfully NCAC siad that ships could wear their ship's uniform in the parade next week, so I am wearing my old ship's "blue-white dress"

Never heard of a troop limiting who can take a MB due to age. Now once upon a time BSA did limit it to specific ranks though. As for camps limiting MBs, heard that and it's usually the popular ones. Problem is, when you get a young motivated scout, the MBs he needs may be the restricted ones and he isn't old enough to take them sooooo...he skips out on Summer Camp and works CSDC as a DC instead b/c his DL and 1/2 the den is registered for CSDC

A fellow Sea Scouter! I don't know if you were in the program as a youth, but htere have been some major changes in the Sea Scout uniform, some affecting decades of tradition, i.e. "bugs" on covers and unit numbers are just two of the examples. I have been told that the uniform changes came about because regional and national bosuns wanted the changes. Anyway, here is the best link to all the new uniform regs http://venturingmag.org/documents/vba/Handbooks/SeaScoutManual/4-Chapter%203.pdf if you join seascout.org's seascoutnet, there is a gentleman with some officer uniforms for sale as a ship fundraiser. I bought a bunch of stuff from him and am in the process of getting it altered, or gewtting back in shape as the case may be Look under Archives and June 2010 for his info.

As I have discovered ordering some Sea Scout, or as it was labeled "Sea Explorer" stuff from National Supply, they sometimes have more stuff from long ago than they realize, ie the "Sea Explorer" labels.

Woodcraft as Adult Training

Acco, Why i am a very big proponent of the older scouts teaching the younger ones. -
Woodcraft as Adult Training
Eagle92 replied to Basementdweller's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
SR, While WB requires a participant to be "fully trained," it no longer has the 2 years tenure prerequisite and as Basement has stated, a brand new CS leader with no outdoor skills can take the course their first year. And with online specific leader training headed our way, BTW did national ever put the CS SLT online like they were suppose to on June 20th, I fear that fewer people will get outdoor training before taking on WB. Yes WB21C is not an outdoor skills course, but I believe you are doing some camping, and to a newbie who is unprepared, that is a recipe for disaster. -
I aslo beleive PADI has a scholarship program for Crews and Ships interested in getting certified.
-
SctDad, can you email it to me? I could use something like that book for CSDC next year.
-
Stosh, I hear ya on the socks. But I beleive the Uniform Police will be on the prowl prior to the parade as they are heavily emphasising the complete and correct unfiorm. Gonna carry extra uniform items, sewing kit, etc. just in case. And I am wearing my Sea Scout uniform, just to drive the UPs crazy AF, yes it is!
-
Also per the PDF that national came out with prior to the 2009 Insignia Guide, you can wear the red topped socks with the Centennial uniform. Heard about how someone decided to switch manufacturers of the socks right before jambo, and they hadn't arrived yet.
-
I like the Expedition for bad weather. First one lasted 2 years before someone picked it up and took it at a Scouting for Food event. Current one is tri-colored from 12 years of wear.
-
AF, As long as they are offical socks, you will be fine. BTW I am in Area 3, section 63 of the Assembly Area, are you anywhere close? Grant you with 10000 scouts and scouters in the parade....

Venturing advancement in Venture Patrols?
Eagle92 replied to sherminator505's topic in Advancement Resources
BP, Yep I'm talking about the Varsity/Venture or Varsity letter and the pins, depending upon what BSA publication you look at. Those things are not restricted. 'Nut, I was told that the reason for callign it Venturing was that the term Venturing was the Scout Association's name for the older scout program. trust me the PTB at national were informed about the confusion months before Venturing came out. What's interesting is that since Venturing came out, the Scout Association has renamed their older youth program...EXPLORING. Go figure.
