  1. I admit I am a little disappointed, especially in light of him speaking at another organization's 100th anniversary celebration. But jamboree isn't over yet, and presidents have been known to pull surprises.
  2. Qwazse, Pamlico Sea Base may be a little cheaper option. Half the driving distance, and a little cheaper in price. Google them for more info
  3. AWESOME READ! I had the pleasure of seeing him at the 98 NLTC, and he is a great man! he's one of those rare folks who puts country before politics, and wants whats best for the USA. It seems as if almost all who go to DC, irregardless of political party, try to do things to stay in power, despite what consequences to the country.
  4. As for national standards for chaplains, I believe their is a NCS course fro chaplains working in a summer camp setting. one of the best "chaplains" I ever met working camp was not ordained., but a seminary student that was recruited. It was a loss to the camp when he had to do his "internship" at a local church a few years later. Good news (to a degree) was that when one of our long term summer camp staffers passed away, the camp chaplain was able to do the service.
  5. Must second ACCO. As a former DE I did have Scouters doing their own thing, and the 30-40 boys I would recruit for that unit would quite by December. And one bad experience gives the whole program a bad name. AND I have seen pros so interested in the numbers that they are willing ot do anything for a quick pickup in numbers to meet goals. They forget that Scouting must have a good program being implemented, with them supporting it, to attract and RETAIN Scouts. Here's my analogy of scouting with apologies to real life players: unit level scouters are the company and field grade officers in the field of WWII who were with the troops. District and council level scouters are the division and corps level staff officers who may or may not be in the field, but are providing direct support. Regional and national level scouters are those officers in the Pentagon, far removed from the action.
  6. NC, Not a diver, but looking at the differences between open water and Jr. open water, there is no difference except age and who they dive with, so I would be OK with it. This website gives some info, and note that if you have the JOWC, you can AUTOMATICALLY (caps for emphasis) upgrade open water cert. once you turn 15. http://www.padi.com/scuba/padi-courses/diver-level-courses/kids-courses/default.aspx Junior Open Water Diver (ages 10-14) Young people can take the full PADI Open Water Diver scuba certification course and upon completion will become Junior Open Water Divers with certain age limitations for scuba diving: Junior Open Water Divers ages 10-11 years old must dive with a PADI Professional or certified parent/guardian. Dives must not exceed 12 metres /40 feet. Junior Open Water Divers ages 12-14 years old must dive with a certified adult. (13+ years old can take the Open Water Diver course online.
  7. Another idea would be to talk to the various religious committees in your council to see if they can establish a chaplain corps. Another idea is to contact any lay religious society's, i.e. Knights of Columbus, to see if they can help. I know in one area, the KCs built a chapel for Scouts to use, and pay for the chaplain to work summer camp.
  8. One program that I believe still exists is the "College Scouter Reserve." If they are registered in this position, then they can wear their uniforms. from this website: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Media/LOS/All/C.aspx College Scouter Reserve A registration status for young people 18 and older who are in college, have been actively registered in Scouting, and commit themselves to an informed interest and active participation in the program whenever possible.
  9. Mike, You only got 2 more years to earn the Triple Crown Award, then you got to add the Summit to the mix for the Quad Crown Yep I've seen them spam before, hence why I added PSB's info. They are a nationally accredited HA base run by the East Carolina Council
  10. I think we should ask the Scouts at jambo about their feelings on this matter. They may be relieved with all the extra security and what not.
  11. there are a few things to think about. 1) if someone under the age of 18 signed off on the card, then it is invalid. that's per national. 2) it appears that folks beleive that once you have the MB, you do not need to be retested, AND THAT IS WRONG IN SOME INSTANCES (caps for emphasis). While you cannot test the youth in order to give him the MB, that's IF signed by 18+ old person, nothing in any book or policy states that the scout cannot be retested in order to do a trip. In Safety Afloat, Skill Proficiency is a key element. Two of the slides I goggled stat that a scout must have proficiency in the MB skills. It does not, repeat NOT, state the MB. So even those with the MB need to demonstrate proficiency. Also it suggests a minimum of 3 hours of training and practice. I know that when I went to Canada, I had 2 or three prep trips prior to actually going, all of which were mandatory. I had to demonstrate at all prep trips minimum MB proficiency, despite having the MB, and had to learn additional skills and demonstrate them. I guess what I trying to say is that even if a scout has the MB, they need to prove those skills before going on a major trip.
  12. AM, Sound like you have major problems with professional staff. Now in referecne to age restrictions, everyone is correct in that it is not suppose to happen. Reality is that it does for a varietyof reasons. The only legitimate ones IMHO, are when local laws state a minimum age for certain activities, i.e. rifle and shotgun activities, etc. My personal opinion is that under First Class and you should focus on mastering the basic scouting skills contained in the T-2-1 requirements. Only MBs I recommend at that level are First Aid MB(still wish it was required for First Class like in the 1980s) and Swimming MB, IF the scout can pass the swim test, otherwise instructional swim.
  13. Barry, while it's been a long time since I taught Lifesaving MB and YMCA Lifeguard, I can tell you this: the go without support is based strongly on escapes, releases, and holds skills of the rescuer. I've seen 5'2" 90 lb girls take on a 6' 185+ pound instructor who is doing his best to drown them when working on active victims and the girls succeed in the rescue. If someone uses the correct holds, positioning the victim correctly, they may have a wild ride to the edge of the pool or beach, but they can handle it. 9/10 of the time the 'drowning victim" tires themself out. I loved playing victim Bring on the "peanutbutter"
  14. Major communication problems. A few questions 1) what guidance did the adult responsible for the website give the scout? If little to no advice, then there is a problem on the adult's part, not the scout's. 2) how often did the scout ask for advice and actually worked on, or attempted to work on the website? If the scout attempted to work on the website, but couldn't b/c the adult wouldn't actually mentor and advise the scout problem with the adult. HOWEVER if the scout didn't go after the adult to get info, advice, etc, problem with the scout. 3) Why wasn't this brought up before? My understanding of advancement policies is that no matter how good a job the scout did or didn't do, he gets full credit for time in the POR. So he should get 5 months credit, not 1.5, since he was fired this month. 4)SM could have handled it a lot better than he did. A SM is to advise and mentor. 5) Did the scout see this coming? Edited: ALSO didn't the SM know the scout was working camp all summer? When we knew scouts were workign staff, we knew they wouldn't attend meetings, and gave them credit for the attendance award and interpatrol competition(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  15. One year at camp, I taught Lifesaving MB and I was called a few unScoutlike names by both youth and adults b/c #1 I wanted the MB skills to be mastered before signing off, and #2 I had a few goof offs that ate up enough time that I got fed up and kicked them out b/c they were a detriment to my students that did want to learn. I did get complaints for kicking out students as well as for issuing partials fo those who did not complete the work. Some SMs and scouts did think that they should get the MB just for showing up to class. Not with me, especially with a MB that can not only save someone else's life, but could potentially endanger the rescuer's as well
  16. Good luck with recruiting! Hopefully I sent you a bunch as I wore my Sea Scout uniform in the parade and had lots of questions about the program. Told them about Sea Scouts, the jambo exhibit, and my council's HA sea base.
  17. Yeah I was kinda disappointed I couldn't get an AB100 patch for the boy. Luckily I got a pic of him on the mini ropes course.
  18. in trying to find pics of the parade, I foudn out that 6 people were sent to the hospital. not dozens.
  19. I did have a Cub Scout and his dad leave the parade b/c his son was getting really tired. Part of it was heat, part of it was lack of sleep. They had a very busy weekend and flew in to march very early in the morning. I know we kept telling our guys to drink up, even singing a "Cub Scout Driking Song" I learned at our Pirates themed CSDC last year( "every time you hear 'drink up me harties yo ho' you drink from your waterbottle" )Also NCAC was providing water to parade marchers at the assembly area.
  20. But aren't there 2 Piedmont councils, one in CA and the other in NC? Why yes there are two Piedmont Councils.
  21. I just came back formthe parade in DC, and while there was uniformity, no one was identical to another in their uniform, except maybe the Sea Scout ship that had a float.
  22. If memory serves, CSPs are priced by the council. Been a while since I worked supply, but I beleive that is how it is done. Also a council can restrict CSPs as to who can sell them, again if memory serves. I know of 1 council that did not allow national to sell them, and I believe the scout shop bought them from the council to sell.
  23. EXCELLENT! which balloon were you on? I saw a few of the ballons, I was busy trying to keep an eye on all my scouts that were mixed up in our section (would have been nice to keep units and council contingents together). Once we finished marching, I was able to watch someof the parade as I dealt with packets.
  24. The Pamlico Sea Base, East Carolina Council, is a nationally accredited BSA high adventure outdoor program developed to provide Sea Scout Ships, Venture Crews, and old Boy Scouts with an exciting opportunity to experience challenging and rewarding high adventure aquatic programs on the coastal waters of Eastern North Carolina. http://www.pamlicoseabase.org/ Ok had to put in a plug form my local council.
