This too shall pass. At least you have several folks helping you. Last few IOLS have had one man shows. -
Eagle App has some poor wording and grammatical errors
Eagle92 replied to Thomas54's topic in Advancement Resources
T2E is spot on, sometimes you need someone who is not close to the paper to proof it. I proofed my wife's papers in grad school, and vice versa. OUCH I thought some of my first papers written grad school were bleeding. That said, in ref to the Eagle app, did he ask you to proof? If so then yes help him out by pointing out the errors, but not the correction. If he didn't ask for your opinion on the app, tell him you spotted a few errors and ask that he and someone else proof it. -
Give Pamlico Sea Base a call, they may be able to help you. www.pamlicoseabase.org and tell reggie E92 sent ya

September Training Update posted
Eagle92 replied to Eagle92's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Short, thanks for the link. Sorry about that. UC, the push for 2012 was mentioned last year if memory serves on one of the training updates, possibly the first or second one. -
Scouting.Org has the latest update. Just an FYI.

Stosh, Love the idea of period uniforms on ship but A) the KIDD, being a warship, only had WAVES on it 1 time, and 2) some of our volunteers and older employees, specificlly our prior and retired military personell have said "#377 NO I aint wearing a uniform again." We were fortunate in that we had a bunch of Tin Can Sailors as volunteers working on the ship. Also one employee who moved back to BR was very pleased to find his ship wasn't razor blades. Whenever he worked the Quarterdeck, he would dispaly some of his personal affects from his time aboard ship. Grant you he served after WWII, but still it was awesome lsitening to his stories.

Base, Agree with ya 100%, esp. since I was one of those scouts growing up. I know 1 grandparent was very concerned b/c they cannot afford a uniform, I told her not to worry as we will work something out. A week and a half after running into her, I got him shorts and a shirt, now got to "sell" it to him. And by sell I mean $1.00 for the shirt and a pants that the CUB pays. That and a "Thank You" note for the OA chapter that got his uniform. I just hope the shorts fits. We are one of those units that take all comers. Challenging at times for the budget, yes but we are fortunate to have a CO that while relatively hands off, does help out. So we do have soem aid to help out. But some of the grandparents are very proud,a nd won't take help. EDITED: I agree 100% that Scouting should be about the boys and take everyone intersted. In reference to programing, yes program is key. If you have a good program ,then they will come. BUT you must also have good communication to notify those of what's going on. My den picked up two folks b/c they heard from their buddies at CSDC what we did last year, and some of the plans for this year.(This message has been edited by eagle92)

I know in my den, we had only 50% of those who finished in May show up for our first den meeting of the school year. Some of the no shows were active over the summer, so I am hoping that it's just missing the first meeting. BBut I know for a fact that I did lose 2 of my scouts to another activity the same nite as our meetings. Hopefully I can find a pack for them that meets on a different nite, or get them involved in the Lone Scout Program. Also another 2 have had their telephone service disconnected. So that is one concern of mine. Try not to take it personally, despite how hard it may be. The important thing is that you want the kids active in scouting, even if they go to another unit. My pack lost a bunch of folks last year b/c one of the churches decided to restart their units, and asked one of our DLs to be CM, as he is a member of the congregation. While the a few in the unit did have hard feelings and were upset, the important thing is that the kids are still involved. My only concern is that they meet on the same nite as we do, and it appears that every pack in the district save 2 meet on Mondays.

Is This It? Changes in the Text of the Roman Catholic Mass?

Like Ran, I too was surprised when I saw the addition of some words, phrases, and sentences in the vernacular from what is already being said.(This message has been edited by Eagle92) -

Beav, Latin non es mortalis, es immortalis! And yes words have been added to the Latin dictionary in the past 20 years. -
Star is doable if you are active. But Sea Scouts and Venturing are other options if you are advancement oriented. But as others mentioned, it's about the skills you learn, and not the rank.

Staves may be a hold over from the older WB course. i knwo staves were used in BA22 back in the day.

Stosh, Understand, oh well. I worked at the USS KIDD, and they went out of the way to make it feel like a WWII ship: bread baking in the galley, 1940s music piped throughout the ship, ships bells every 30 minutes, etc. Heck they even had a 48 star Ensign and Jack. Grant you no uniforms, except the reenactors on special occasions.

I'm wondering if the Church Pennant will be going up over the National Ensign at the USS YORKTOWN this weekend when services are being conducted, per USN regs.

Scouting and Eagle on Applications
Eagle92 replied to Engineer61's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Sail, Then the app has changed. I remember when it did b/c I had just joined a Ship the summer before going to college. Grant you I only got Apprentice, apparently I never had a board of review to get Ordinary, but I was joining for fun and a challenge. -
Using older Scout literature in your program
Eagle92 replied to Spiney Norman's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Well I may be using my old Sea Scout manual this weekend. The pack is going to the USS YORKTOWN this weekend, and I'll was reviewing the 1945 Sea Scout book for language and terminology. EXCELLENT STUFF! Too bad the current manual got rid of Davy Shellback. -

ed Ed SMHB is one I recommend after reading it. Haven't directly applied it as a leader, although a good bit of it was done as a scout. 2nd ed BSFB That was a handme down and I used it so much as a scotu, that the cover tore of it it and it is stained. I brought that one out to BALOO last month, as well as some older MBPs I have. Not scouting per se, but GBB did write a non scout nature book, I beleive in retirement. local library has a copy. -
Ruffles are the best for starting fires, and I mean campfires.

Eagle Scout - how big an emphasis?
Eagle92 replied to sherminator505's topic in Advancement Resources
I admit I have mixed emotions on this. One one hand I know that the goal of Scouting isn't Eagle, but rather giving the youth a chance to grow physically, mentally, and morally. I've seen a few who I couldn't beleive were Eagles, and I've seen guys who I just couldn't believe were not Eagles. I have friends who didn't make it to Eagle, but I have the utmost respect for them, and am willing to trust them with my life in any situation (heck in one case with one individual I did). On the other hand, I do want my sons to be Eagles. I admit I am sometimes harder on the oldest than his buddies in the den b/c I know what he's capable of doing. I am working on that. I am also doing my best to keep Cub Scouting fun, and not focus on advancement and belt loops, etc. I beleive that all the stuff will come with an active program. But I am pushing a little on his religius award. He has until May to finish it, and I am reminding him to take his book with him to church so that he can work on it while the sermon is going on. I rather him work on that than be bored or fall asleep Hopefully I'm like my old SM and the leaders in my troop growing up. The mentored us and guided us, but left the work and motivation to get Eagle to us. Maybe a swift kick to the seat of the pants as a reminder that you only got 4 months to finishn -
Scouting and Eagle on Applications
Eagle92 replied to Engineer61's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Most applications I've seen, both work and educational, have a place for other awards/honors. I usually put Eagle there. One scholarship app had a spot specifically for Eagle Scout. They also a spot for Quartermaster for Sea Scouts, and other recognitions by other youth associations. And if memory serves you did get points towards the total for listing Eagle and the other honors. Grant you the NROTC application may have changed since I filled one out, but I beleive it's still on the application. I have Eagle listed on my resume and CV. Yes I have other honors listed, both professional and scholastic, but Eagle si the one I am most proud of, especially since I was one of those who completed everything but the EBOR before turning 18. And I had a VP of HR ask me about Scouting. Not only my involvement with the program, but about work related expereinces gained. Apparently one 20 something applicant had a heavy dose of leadership experience from being in the OA, and working summer camp during his college years. He found it difficult to beleive that someone in the 20s could have done everything he said he did. I had to say it's possible and relate what I did prior to graduating college. Needless to say he was impressed. -
here's a scenario Battle of Naboo in SW ep 1TPM, and you are a Gungan taking aim at battle droids. Using aluminum pie pans attached to a string ( so they can move backwards when hit) and glue battle droid and droidekas pictures for targets.

Bac, WHEH you scared me there for a minute. I thought those figures were for BSA as a whole, not for just LDS chartered units. glad tenure is coming up. Thanks for the link.
-
Actually only CS wore it above the right pocket, including Webelos in the BS uniform. Sometime after 1985 did the uniforms come with flag sewn on, and all on the right sleeve. I remember having to cut off the flag, and all my CS patches, and resewing the flag to the right sleeve when I crossed over. Don't remember if CS leaders wore it in the same position or not.

Bac, Could you post the link please? Not doubting you all, but I am disturbed by those stats, and would like to know about the model they used. I knew turnover on the CS side is high, let's face it kids crossover and usually parents crossover too, but 26 mos for an SM and 21 for an ASM is not what I'm use to. I'm use to SMs and ASMs staying 5-20+ years. And even then, some move to the troop committee, become commissioners, etc, so their expereince and wisdom is still available to advise their repalcements. Unless of course they move to another area of the country due to a job. And usually they join a unit in that area. Again I'm curious about the model, as I would love how I would count in it. I moved 5 times in a 7 year period serving in a total of 11 different positions, several PORs were concurrent, in that period. Longest stay in one location was 2.5 years, shortest was 4 months.
