  1. Yep at the HSs i'm familiar with, band is a class and counts towards GPA. Now the school I went, b/c band practice was before school, the time they normally would be in class was a free period to allow them to do HW, Only when they were not practicing did they actually attend class, which was very rarely.
  2. Forgot to add this for the Uniform Police, as I had to deal with this one time at a uniform inspection. 1) BSA states that all uniforms ever used are still permitted to be worn. So if a CS or CS leader is wearing the green and tan numbers on his CU shirt, he is in a "vintage" August 2008-April 2009 era uniform, and thus properly uniformed per the instructions in place at that time 2)Further the literature from that period also state that items from the "ODL" uniform and CUs are interchangable. So a scout or leader wearing red numbers or loop on his CU shirt is also properly uniformed per the instructions from that time. Whoever thought up the color switch wasn't thinking IMHO. EDITED: Yep I still have a copy of the pdf that said he above.(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  3. Adam, Nope the Insignia Guide never showed all leaders, or Webelos wearing the BS uniform, in tan and green items. BUT the Insignia Guide for the Centennial Uniforms also came out about 8-9 months after the uniforms did. Prior to the IG coming out, all BSA literature referecneing the new uniforms did show everyone in the CUs in green and tan numbers, and trained strip if applicable. In fact some post IG literature from national, i.e. uniform essentials guides, seasonal catalogs, etc, did have pre-IG photos in them. Hence confusion still exists.
  4. Beav and Blanc, Sorry should have been more specific I was referring to this. If it is an actual YP issue, then yes contact the pros. I do not think this is a YP issue as described, but I wasn't there and describing something, especially over the 'net, can be challenging. Alsoi admit I misread the statement, my apologies to SD on that matter. Anytime YP comes up, it gets to me b/c of what I had to deal with, and I sometimes relive, for lack of a better word, those events adn sometimes blockout everythign else.
  5. Emb, Don't feel to bad, they don't even mention Sea Scout uniforms at BSAUNIFORMS.org (caps to show that it is suppose to cover all uniforms by the URL, not just national supply). HMMM I wonder if I facebook them about the lack of venturing leaders and sea scouts, they will fix it? I FB'd them about the wrong training strip and that got fixed.
  6. ED, I must respectfully disagree with not informing the SE as soon as possible. YP guidelines do state that we need to contact the SE. And as a DE who had to make the phone call to the SE one time,it is not fun at all. Also many states do have reporting laws, as well as protection for the person reporting it in case it is a false alarm. Sorry to be a pain about this, but I've dealt with YP issues as a volunteer and as a pro. I don't want any youth to have to go through some of the stuff I've had to deal with.
  7. I'm surprised that Sailing hasn't gotten more involved in this conversation as banning the stuff would put a definite hamper on Sea Scouts as they use the stuff all the time.
  8. SMB, A little bit of advice from someone who was once in your shoes, as well as seeing what happens when someone with many hats backs out of scouting: START RECRUITING REPLACEMENTS NOW! (caps for emphasis) When I was a DE, my district committee members served in multiple roles,a nd the district overall was suffering. We still have people doign 2-3 jobs, but it isn't as bad. Trust me having one person focus on one job is a lot better for scouting than one person doing 3-5 jobs. it hurts scouting b/c you cannot focus on one objective to provide the best quality program, and it can hurt family life. Secondly what would happen to Scouting in your area if soemthing was to happen to you? My district is now dealing with this as we had a family, esp the husband, who were super involved in Scouting on the district and council level: Webeloree Chief, OA Associate Advisor, Popcorn Kernal, WB staffer, Summer camp staffer, IOLS trainer, camporee staff, ad nauseum. When they unexpectedly left scouting due to a family emergency, a lot of positions were left vacant and we are scrambling to get the vacancies filled. Camporee in 3 weeks will be intersting, and Popcorn sales have been "intersting." On a local troop level, one thing you can do to help ease any changes in adult leadership would be to truly use the Patrol Method and let your SPL, PLs, and other youth leaders run things in toto. When a new SM was installed after the old one retired after 25 years, the transition was smooth b/c the SPL, LC, and PLs were running things. Nobody really noticed the transition b/c it was business as usual.
  9. It is vital that the SPL and SM approve teh DC not only for POR credit, but to make sure the DC is a good example of the troop AND can help recruit new Scouts into the troop. Being a good example is very important and and can make or break a troop's recruiting. I've seen it where parents saw a poor DC and didn't take their scouts their. I also saw a case where a great DC was able to recruit 1 scout form the pack he was workign in, despite the 20 minute drive to the meeting.
  10. Forgot to add, in addition to all the new leaders, registrars also have to deal with inputting older training records that maynot be in SCOUTNET. Don't get me started on that one. BUT one advice for any DEs and other pros onthe boards: MAKE SURE THAT ANY TRAINING YOU TAKE AND/OR TEACH GETS PUT INTO YOUR SCOUTNET RECORDS! (caps for emphasis). Another former pro and I have discovered that our records were not complete and that courses we took or taught while pros were not placed into the computer.
  11. 'Nut, Having helped prepare data for entry when SCOUTNET first came out, it is a PITA. Grant you that was over 10 years ago, so things may, and I hope have, changed. But then everything was entered by hand. But even if it is scanned, the sheer volume can be overwhelming, esp in a metro council. Usually one a few folks are authorized to enter the info. One thing that is making it challengingis the new requirement that leaders take YPT prior to submmitting an application.
  12. Agree with Short, a knife is a tool, plain and simple. to ban it outright without a reason is kinda silly.
  13. have they fixed teh trained patch on the female CS leader yet? They had teh tan and green one showing. Just went there, glad they fixed the CS trained emblem. But what is up with 2 differetn types of scouts, Boy Scout, and Boy Scout-Eagle Rank, and what's up with the supersized patrol medallion? Also why does the Eagle A) have no flag on his shirt and B) has the wrong size MB sash?(This message has been edited by Eagle92)
  14. Jet, While the LNT Trainer is a minimum of 14yos, when I did a sample of LNT Trainer courses listed on the LNT website, you either A) had to be 18 to take the course from that instructor or B) be a college student. Don't know too many 14yo College students.
  15. How about the SWAT team coming out. Saw a troop do that as a recruiting nite, and got the cubs really pumped. The 2 team members brought out all of the equipment from the van, and let them handle some of it: nite vision goggles, grenade launcher, crowd control shield, bb gun, etc. Also seen the Search and Rescue team come out and let the dogs do their thing. Kinda nice having one of your Eagles build training obstacles for his project, as the handles loved showing off what their dogs could do and how the obstacles helped with training.
  16. CT, In the UK, they call them Camp or Campfire blankets, and they were very common. Considering I was wearing a sweatshirt and GI field jacket in July, those blankets were worn year round.
  17. '72 Yep that is what scouting should be about: going on your own. I've been dealing with Cubbies for to long now. Ok the whoop whoop whoop noise is now leaving the area (This message has been edited by eagle92)
  18. OK call me a helicopter parent, but here it goes. now remember this is me A) not knowing the patrol, and B) me dealign with Cubs for the past year. 1) I would make sure the SPL and SM shake them down prior to the trip to ensure they have everything they need. 2) the carry a communication device, i.e. radio, or cell phone just in case.
  19. I like Short's apporach: SM having a sitdown prior to the election and talkignit over with those interested. BUT i like the idea of the current SPL doing the talking That said, the way it was done growing up was that folks interested would already be asking opinions, talking to the SPL or members of the LC who had been SPL, and getting their feedback. I know of instances where great scouts declined to run b/c they knew going into the elections that they could not fullfill the responsibilities due to time constraints.
  20. Teh other problem is that while initially the drug works wonders and you are super focused, you do plateu,
  21. Other software is also markign the site as unsafe.
  22. Side affectscan be severe, very severe. I know when I took my first dose, the lowest available (had to go to 3 different pharmacies to get the right dose as the first two didn't carry it that low) I had chest pains and numbing sensation down my left arm. Was in the ED, had the EKG, etc and everything went back to normal. They couldn't find anything wrong. Didn't take it again for a few days, then on the advice of teh prescribing physician, took it again, and gradually upped the dose per MD's written orders ( took 3 weeks to up the dose to 20MG instead of the MD's 1 week, wanted to make sure I was use to the 10mg before doubling it). No problems since, but that first day was scary!
  23. Eng, Now that is how it's done! natural consequences, plus he had to deal with someone elses mistake. Shows the importance of doing things right.
  24. I beleive, stressinge the word beleive, the 'Centennial Quality Unit Award" started in 2007 to celebrate the founding of Scouting on Brownsea Island in 1907. If my memory serves, you did have a few scout troops, not many, spring up in the USA prior to BSA's incorporation in 1910, in one case I know of set up by Anglican Missionaries.
  25. Sailing, Ritalin already has a street value, at least in my neck of the woods. So it isn't in the next decade, but in the present. As I mentioned in another thread, I am on it, and did express my concerns about the med to my MD. I had a nice discussion on the topic with the MD and it was mentioned that yes it can be addictive and yes it there is a black market for it. One reason why FDA, or maybe DEA, requires MDs to constantly monitor it and the patient as well as limit prescribing the med to one month's dosage.
