Short, You got me!
-
I know Philmont did a backpacking WB with the old program. But you'll need a lot of extension cords and possibly a burro to carry some of the electrical equipment needed for WB21C on a trek
-
Kudu, If you go to the original link and then go under the drop down bar, your site is one of the other resources they recommend.
-
Yep kow about and nominated someone for the Gold Badge. Pretty intensive with lots of work involved. Not really publicized.

I'm going to stick to the red, but the boys may get the green as it's cheaper and washable. Also wish they had more sizes, but it may not be viable option. I also noticed the other jackets they have. not to shabby, just wished they placed the BSA logo in a more visable spot. I also wish they would come back out with the spruce green jacket they came out with in 1998 or 1999 when Venturing first came out. Went great with the Venturing uniform.

Ok just went back to the link and staretd reading the entire thing instead of glaninc and goint ot hte links. WOW no way i'd put all that stuff on it.

Your staff needs to suit your personality. I'm very utilitarian and like having extras handy just in case. One guy I know is a wood carver, and I would NEVER take one of his out on a hike as they are true works of art with portraits and scout stuff carved into it. One skill I wish I had. Sailing, I bet i could find a way to put a space blanket on the stave, but foldingit back to that size is PITA!

Gotta, That's ok, ya wearing a "vintage August 2008 to April 2009 uniform." Seriously though, there has been so much confusion on this topic b/c national has kept changing things around, and as has been noted in this thread not been really clear on things, that I would not worry about it. If the U.P. come after ya, let me know and I'll send ya A) the info that states cubs in the scout uniform and leaders wear the tan and green insignia EDITED: THAT WAS PUBLISHED FROM AUGUST 2008 TO APRIL OR MAY 2009 ( caps to emphasis edit, not shouting)and B) send you the info that you can mix and match CU items and ODL items EDITED: THAT WAS PUBLISHED FROM AUGUST 2008 TO APRIL OR MAY 2009 ( caps to emphasis edit, not shouting).(This message has been edited by Eagle92)

Gern, Problem with local option is that units do use council facilities with other units, i.e. summer camp, cmaporees, etc, and parents and CO would be concerned.
-
Don't remember the detail of Dale, I was at camp working when this was going on, but wasn't their a Juris Amicus Brief from a very unlikely group that supported the BSA's decision b/c as Beavah pointed out, it would affect ALL organizations' right to refuse membership. I think it was PFLAG but am not too sure.

Craig, I want to publicly apologize if it seems as if I was trying to start an argument,as that is not the case. I try to use humor and emoticons to show that I am not trying to pick a fight and trying to make conversations more lighthearted etc, since it is sometimes difficult to convey the written word without seeign the gestures, tone of voice, etc of the person. Per the PM I sent ya, I believe nationally royally screwed up with changing the color scheme, then made it worse when they contradicted the information originally given in reference to CS and their leaders. As I stated elsewhere this has caused problems in my pack and at the local distributor. Heck when I called my old national scout shop to try to find the correct information from a national employee, the info he gave me, per what he was told by his superiors, was cotnradicted a week or two later! So this was a complete mess. Also the Uniform Inspections are a big deal at this district's camporee, with Insignia Guides and inspection sheets being used in the past to clarify why scouts didn't get a perfect score. EDITED: That's why I asked in all sincerity about where I can find the info. The folks who don't like the inspection results sometimes go after the inspectors and their uniforms. It;s good to have documentation, especially as competitive as the camporees can get.(This message has been edited by Eagle92)

Test Out Option for Intro to Outdoor Skills
Eagle92 replied to Eagle92's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Moose, Noen that I know of, but I've been told that many councils just send their WDLs to IOLS instead, or offer a combined course with break out sessions specific to the different leaders. That said, I was told by a DE that since I did SM Fundamentals back in the day, as well as help teach IOLS, I would not need to take WeLOT. -
I've been thinking what my old troop use to do, or at least I heard as I never saw it done. We had some of the old, heavy, canvas tents with no floor or netting from when the troop first started. We had them after almost 20 years, and I was told that if any patrol didn't take care of their tents, the old canvas ones would be the ones they would use from then on.

Yep it's the wife. Problem is that with the exception of the TCDLs, everyone returned except 1 ACM, so we aren't really a new pack in that sense, and should be better organized. Unfortunately the committee is in name only, and appointed by the CO, which is hands off. So I have no idea who is even on the committee and have only met 1 member 1 time and that was to sell popcorn to him after church services. As for the newsletter, that's part of the problem. For whatever reason it appears that only half the folks are at a den meeting at a time, so I can never get updated records. heck we had 1 kid show up after not attending anything for 8 months, and we meet year round! And since we merged 2 dens, and added a few extras, I only have the, in some cases outdated, info from my den last year. I cannot access the records of the other cubs. talked to the PACKMASTER admin, and it was supposed to be fixed, but it didn't happen. So I have no idea who is in my den, and only limited contact info. And while I pass around the newsletter when folks do show up, it's hit or miss.

Ok folks my dilemma has been solved, and I am not going to be CM. SWMBO made that decision for me at the camp out this weekend. However I can offer all the advice and give all the help I can to get the pack going, unless it starts conflicting with the family. So I have done a lot of the prep work, i.e. getting a proposed calendar together, trying to put a bug in folks ears about having the first leaders' meeting of the year, reminding everyone of the new YPT requirements, etc. CM was suppose to send an email about the leaders meeting for Monday, but no word yet, so I emailed him and the ACM about it just now. I am hearing complaints from parents, and believe we lost a few cubs b/c of the disorganization. So I am getting exhausted and frustrated. I am honestly thinking about creating my own den calendar for the year and doing my own thing. I've already got a den calendar together to late January, and put in 'Tentative" dates for several pack activities that were done last year. But I honestly don't have a clue as to what's going on. It's to the point that I'm thinking of a ADM Farragut and "... full speed ahead" and just fill in those dates with our own activities. Your thoughts, suggestions, and prayers are most welcome.

The only "unwieldy" part is my carabiner, and that is when I carry the staff in my left hand b/c I have it lashed on in a way that it is out of the way when carrying it in the right hand. Seriously though the way I have it, I drilled holes into the staff and inserted the fishing and fire starting materials. Both are covered in wax to fill it out and secure the materials. The fishing stuff is under the paracord handle in a horizontal hole, while the fire stuff is at the top of the stave in a vertical hole. All markings and diagrams are woodburned, not tacked on like the updated sheet. Again the only problem I've really had is the 'biner when I use it in my left hand. And I've used the biner too to carry supply around CSDC this summer.

Sailing, The lawsuit that changed YPT standards is what caused the delay to ALL BSA publications as the YPT info in them had to be changed. I know Keith from his time in New Orleans, great guy and one that cares about the program.
-
Ywep the new requirements came out before the book was published. Then again, the new book has been delayed. Also the work I heard is that the volunteers and youth on the national sea scout committee worked ont he revisions.
-
I am so in favor of them, that I suggested that we set them up with popcorn sales next year instead of offering 2 outrageous prizes ( Wii and super nerf Blaster). Yes we have a few gung ho sellers, but overall the cubs and parents are not interested. BUT I bet that if you told parents sell x amount of popcorn you get y% towards dues, activities, etc, folks will be more willing. I know growing up, if it wasn't for the ISA, I would not have been able to afford being in scouting once my father walked out.

From the incidents I cited above, as well as the fact that homosexual marriage hasn't been voted on by the voters directly, but either legislated or enforced through the judiciary, I think we will lose members, not gain. Will that change someday, maybe. But not in the near future.
-
Sherm, Per the info brochure that was basically uniform policy in absence of an Insignia Guide from August 2008 to April 2009, the Centennial Uniform and ODL uniform items are interchangeable, so you can wear the red loops, numbers, old trained strip, etc on the new uniform. Whoever thought up the color change wasn't thinking IMHO.

Sailing, One of the advantages of being the "redheaded stepchild of Scouting" is that national kinda overlooks you and doesn't really mess around with your advancement, uniforms, standards, etc. You are kinda there. national just changes your name from Sea Scouts to Sea Explorers, and back to Sea Scouts again Seriously though Sea Scouts has a very big advantage in that it does have its traditions and has maintained it standards. Sure you have your non-traditional ships like mine growing up was as a result of the Career interest Exploring period, but nationally the volunteers and youth seem to be more in control, and do have an understanding traditional Sea Scouting. Sure some volunteers complain about minutia on the SeaScout.net, but compared to the changes in Sea Scouts and Boy Scouts, CDR Keene would see alot of what he did in the traditional ships still. Although I still cannot understand why they did away with the bugs and ship numbers.

This is from my expereince, so it's not opinion. 1) We will have COs who will refuse to recharter their units. As a DE I lost a pack when the Dale v BSA lawsuit was announced and a CO thought the BSA would lose the decision. No matter what I said about how they choose the leaders of their pack, they did not want to risk anything and decided to drop the pack. 2) You will have parents who are so concerned about abuse that they will not allow their sons to join Scouting. In the mid to late 1970s their was a child abuse/BSA scandal in New Orleans where a troop was formed by a group of homosexuals with the intent to abuse the scouts. One reason why my mother didn't push my brothers to find another troop after they moved (that and they were bored as it was "urban scouting"). My mom was constantly asking me things after meetings and trips. I didn't realize why until I was in college and did research on this issue. 2a) When Scouting for All protested the Southeast LA Council, which has its offices visible from I-10, the council actually had folks calling to sign up their sons b/c the Boy Scouts did not allow homosexuals as leaders. Yes some folks didn't pay attention to Dale v BSA.

Once official, always official. that way national keeps the rights to it and can go after folks who use the old uniforms without permission. That's why I don't complain when I see Cub Scout leaders in the new uniforms with green numbers, it's a "Vintage August 2008 - April 2009" uniform
