  1. Well I found out something about my "twins" tonite from one of the other leaders; they are not twins and and one is just now old enough to be a TC. Going to confirm this later this week. If true I will not be happy about this one bit. As for national updating info, if memory serves from my time as a DE when SCOUTNET was just being used, individual councils can update records at anytime. However speaking from expereince, councils will add youth a lot faster than adults.
  2. 'Nut, I have their contact info, and if I can get a hold of them, or if they will return my phone call or email, I will get them. Sorry about that last post. VERY frustrated with the pack again. Found out at 2:12PM today that the pack meeting is cancelled. Not only am I upset about the meeting being cancelled at the last minute, but also at the fact that I wasted my Saturday calling all the registered Tigers as well as all the registered Wolves and a few extras. Our TCDL hasn't been around in 2 weeks, and I saw 2 TCs at a birthday party Friday nite who are registered in my pack, but have switched to another pack. No one in our packs knows about the transfer either. Plus I called everyone who I know is active and the unknowns in my den, the other wolf den, as well as the new Wolves to remind them about the meeting. In all over 30 folks. Oldest son has 2 or 3 friends in the den still. Most of his friends are in another pack. He knows I am getting frustrated and asked if we transfer, can we join one of two packs he has friends in. I was going to wait until May and help the pack out, but this is getting worse.
  3. Looks like I need to wait a week to talk to the parents as the pack meeting was cancelled tonite about 25 minutes ago. Not a happy camper at the moment
  4. Thanks all. 2 CUBS I'll be talking to dad tonite. I have a feelign they will be stickign with me though Base, Understand completely. I asked our DE for a copy of the charter, one of ther benes for being on the dist. comm., to find out who is in my den as the pack's records are a mess at the moment. made phone calls this past weekend to discover who is staying and who quit. Although a few no longer have active phone numbers, inc. one scout who signed up a few weeks back but haven't seen since. John, DUH why didn't I think about that. But then again we do a registrar vacancy at the moment I beleive. Nut, good point.
  5. Stosh, Can't find the link now, but their is a website that allows you to print topo maps for free. Don't remember if it's restricted to NC or not though. part of it is that you can enlarge the map to a degree without problems. Enlarge to much and it becomes pixulated. You will need access to a plotter to print out the maps, unless you want a series of 8x11 maps. I had a work project that I needed topo maps for last year, and found the exact square I wanted for the project, a topo of the local camp Since that map didn't cover the entire table, I also got the maps of the county I work in. Those three maps helped rather nicely.
  6. Dances, I was told that the age part of the requirements came from LDS packs that still use the old 3 year CS program. Base, good luck with fixing the charter. My pack had someone go over it with a fine tooth comb last year, and we still had errors, i.e. I was not listed as a TCDL until MAY, one leader is still not registered, etc. With no committee, yet anyway but we are working on it, It's come down to a few of us to get the charter done correctly. On another note, After how many years since Tigers became fully integrated into Cub Scouts and not being a separate program, i.e. wear the blue uniforms, earn Bobcat before their Tiger, etc, Why isn't Tiger Cub listed as a rank on SCOUTNET still?
  7. Ok this is a new problem for me. When I was reviewing the charter I noticed that one of my Cubs is listed as being in the 3rd grade, not 2nd. I am going to get the correct info tonite. Knew the Bday, and wasn't concerned as it is oneof those late bdays where some go in on time, others are held back. But if he really is in 3rd grade, and not second, what are some ways to handle it? Should I let him stay in my den of wolves and just let it go? Should I move him up to Bears, and let him skip Wolves altogether? Should I think outside the box? And this problem aslo affects his twin brother, who isn't on the charter at all. At least I know how to handle that problem.
  8. Stosh, it's now kinda hard to argue the jeans when Supply now sells their own brand http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=APPAREL&c3=PANTS&c4=&lv=3&item=610520-9 Now I know the website says Not for official uniform wear, but I know folks who say, if national sells it, it's official. And vendors do provide misinformation at times.
  9. Base, I know you are ticked off at the course, and from your posts I would too at some of the stuff, but you made a commitment in time, energy, and money. I say follow through by completing the ticket, and yes getting the beads. I say complete the ticket b/c hopefully you chose ticket items that will make a better program. That will benefit the scouts in your area, which is the most important thing to do! Put up with the shenigans for the time being in order to provide that program for your youth. As for getting the beads, yes get them, for several reasons. 1) it does show a commitment to Scouting by willing to sacrifice your time, energy, and money to the program. 2) It shows that you do care about the youth as you have completed a series of projects that will hopefully provide a better program. 3)By having those beads, you have a better understanding of WB21C, and your critques of the program have more validity than someone who hasn't gone through the program but has kept abreast of the info and course material like myself. 4) you may be able to make a difference if you choose to staff the event in the future. And 5) if you ever move to another area, you will have completed WB21C. I know when I went through BALOO, I was kinda sad as it was completely indoors. Some equipment was shown, but it was mostly a lecture and drawings on a dry erase board. I said I can do a better job, and was able to put on a BALOO course this past fall. It wasn't perfect, not by a long shot, but it was in the outdoors, equipment was on display, both stuff they would see regularly and stuff they probly won't see until Boy Scouts, etc. But the 2 instructors I recruited said it was 100 times better than the one we went through, the students were happy with it, and one student said it was a lot better than what he was told he would be doing as his CM went though the course I did. My old FD told me, " always try to make lemonade out of lemons," and that is what may need to be done with WB situation.

  11. Drat the dreaded double post (This message has been edited by eagle92)
  12. Too bad supply can't sew on patches in the proper locations geez
  13. Stosh, The two courses are so nearly identical now, that I've seen a syllabus produced by one council that has it combined, they just haev break out sessions for the specific areas that are not identical. National said that a combined course will be headed our way earlier this year. Then just prior to Jambo, they said next year the courses will be combined. I know in my district, I was told by my DE that A) BALOO is just a formality for me for SCOUTNET reasons and B) I, and anyone else who has had IOLS or older versions thereof, would not need WeLOT as IOLS and WeLOT are nearly identcial.
  14. Yes you will find folks who will lie about membership in the OA. I encountered that situation a few years back. talked about it previously on the threads here. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
  15. DRAT a double post!(This message has been edited by Eagle92)
  16. Gotta, #1 HAPPY HALLOWEEN! #2 to answer your question, yes an untrained leader can take a Webelos Den out camping. part of the rationale I'm told is that most of the time, the den is going camping with a scout troop, and the Scout leaders have the training. In ref to IOLS vs WeLOT, national a few months back in a training update stated that the two courses would be combined. A lot of councils are already doing it that way, and some do not even put on WeLOT, telling folks to take IOLS instead. Me personally I recommend IOLS for those who need outdoor training. I strongly recommend the test out option for those who have the skills already. As a 18 or 19 yo ASM who earned eagle and had 2 50 milers under my belt, the outdoor portion of the old SM Fundamentals was kinda boring.
  17. The lack of camping does concern me. and while Advancement is like a suntan, coming naturally when i the outdoors, even a 'hiking and camping troop" that goes out every single month won't have 100% First Class Scouts in a year. So that does concern me. As others have mentioned, it does seem like Webelos III, especially the belt fobs ( saw them when I worked for national and they were not popular in my area, and I thought they discontinued them.) That said, ti does seem the program you are describe is a lot more active than the one I've seen.
  18. I met a SM who did not finish his ticket, due to circumstances beyond his control. Long story short, despite not earning his beads, he was one of the most respected SMs in the council, and his troop was one that every SM would dream of, esp. Kudu, as they were a hiking and a camping troop. They regularly went to Philmont and the other HA bases, did a mix of car camping and backpacking, and when someone wore a rank, they really did master the skills involved.
  19. Every troop is different. As others have posted, the SPL and ASPL may be running around with their heads chopped off doing things Sometimes they may be working with the younger guys. In my troop growing up, the ASPL was the de facto PL of the Leadership Corps. So when we split into patrol corners, he got the other LC members together and they did their own thing.
  20. one thing to remember, since den camping is not approved, anything happens on a den campout, excepting Webelos dens of course, will not be covered by BSA insurance.
  21. 2Cub, the pros may be trying to rebuild without getting older district committee members, but one thing they cannot do is not recognize the CORs as not only district, but also council committee/board members. that's part of the annual charter. A council violates that, they may get in some trouble.
  22. I know one united wanted an 'all in one" so they combine the CSP, unit number, and applicable vet bar
  23. Moose, The family camping mentioned in the G2SS refers to councils offering camping trip where a pack doesn't have to go, but any member, and their family can. Examples include cub weekends on council properties, or council approved properties in a few cases. usually the campout is run on the counsil level , but sometimes on the district one if the district is large enough.
  24. Oak, For got to add Den camping, exempting Webelos Cub Scout dens.
  25. Gotta, PACKS can camp all they want. Heck if the pack wants to schedule 3 trips in 5 weeks, they can do it. BUT dens can't. And family camping is allowed at council events without a pack. Lucky for me as at the last campout, only my den, 1 TC, and 1 Webelos showed up. One reasons I was told, and the person could be wrong, is that by having a pack do the camping, more resources are available: tents, cooking supplies, coolers, etc. Trust me organizing a den campout is a lot harder than a pack one. As I stated above, the council's family campout turned into a den one for me with no one else from my pack attending except mentioned above ( probably b/c that was our 3rd trip in 5 weeks, and the Webelos had a campout the following week). We had 0 support as no one form the pack b/c none of the leaders except me and my ADL were attending: no coolers, stoves, tarps, misc. supplies, nothing.
