First part I didn't do to well on, only getting 4 of the 10. Second part was a little better, 6 out of 10. My problem is, whenever i put it on, my three sons always run in and want to "start at the war games, daddy"

'Dad, 2nd-5th grades was how the CS program was when I became a CS. National came out with Tiger Cubs, which was a separate program from Cub Scouts, but associated with a pack the same year I was finally old enough to be a CS. Packs didn't have to have TCs affiliated with them, they had their own motto, promise, and law, and when you finished the program in May, you received a square 3" Tiger Cub Graduate patch as a temp emb. Later it became a Tiger Cub Strip worn under the right pocket. 3rd grade was when CS formally began as a Wolf, 4th was Bear, and 5th was Webelos. That's how LDS units still do things. I think dropping the age came about b/c GS started in 1st, but don't quote me on it.

Ok folks, what are some great resources you recommend usingfor coming up with different ideas for outdoor cooking. It can bee books, website, articles, anythign at all. I looking for everything related to the topic: recipes, cooking instructions, directions for making equipment ( on the cheap I must add), etc, etc. While I am looking primarily for the CS level, I'm putting my money where my mouth is and put the OUTING in Cub ScOUTING at CSDC this summer if possible, I want ideas that all levels can use b/c I will share this info with others. Thanks in advance.

Putting Patrol method in IOLS Test-out..
Eagle92 replied to moosetracker's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
HICO, One reason why in an earlier post, ormaybe a different thread, I suggested usign Older scouts, i.e. 1st Class and Above, and/or Venturers either having the Outdoor Bronze, or workign on it as I believe part of the requirements invovle teaching (but I mioght be confusing it with RANGER), help staff events. -
Dean, Like Lord Vader at the end of Ep. VI Return of the Jedi, I've turned to the Light Side and am a volunteer again. But one of the folks on the committee is very big on the CS side of things locally, and I think he is getting some attention from region and national. Plus the SE made the comment that CS needs more activity. Please keep the ideas coming.

Whatever type of tent you decide, TAKE CARE OF IT!!!!!! (caps for emph, not shouting). make sure they are clean, dry, and periodically rewaterproofed. My troop had tents 20 year old tents that were still servicable. They were 4 man Eureka's, and we used them for 2 people. Like others said the numebr of folks is actually lower with ger inside. My troop's philosophy was take the number and divide by 2, so a 4 man tent= 2 men and gear, 6 man = 3 and gear, etc. now what I have. I have a 2 man Eureka that I owned for the past 11 years. Only problem I've had with it is the nylon pouch for the ridge pole has finally worn through and needs to be replaced. Not that big a deal and I will be getting to it shortly. This is what I have mostly used since I got it. There is a newer version of it, with fiberglass poles instead of aluminum, but I won't get that until my current one is unservicable. And if the Eurekas my troop has are any indication of the quality, I'll have it for a very long time. Now my 2 man Eureka won't cut it for CS camping. Tried it twice and it gets cramped with the then TC and me, so I definately can't use it for family camping SOOOOO the wife gets me a Coleman "Villa del Mar" 6 man tent for Valentine's Day ( If your wife gets you a tent for Valentine's Day, you might be a Scouting Addict). No problems with it. It can be cold compared to others when the temp drops, but that's what extra wool blankets and a capote are for

If you scheduled an OA dance presentation on your son's birthday, you might be a Scouting Addict. If you go to a powwow with the OA on your wife's birthday, you might be a Scouting Addict. If you go camping on your wife's birthday, you might be a Scouting Addict. If your wife brings your birthday cake to the council camporee, you might be a Scouting Addict. If you think taking your Cubs camping Mother's Day Weekend is a good idea so that mom has break, you might be a Scouting Addict. (OK pack leadership said NO to that one ) If your wife wants to wait a week to celebrate your anniversary, because it's after CSDC so you won't be talkign about all the work you still need to do at dinner, you might be a Scouting Addict. If your planning your vacation around the pack's summertime activities and CSDC, you might be a Scouting Addict. If you schedule a babysitter so your wife can do a storytime at CSDC, you might be a Scouting Addict. Last but not least... If you had three different Scouting functions on the same day, each requiring different clothes, i.e. service project and hence scout t-shirt and work clothes, meeting needing a field uniform, and a new charter presentation with the dress uniform, AND you visit that cute librarian between functions. then you are a "mostly harmless," scouting professional. Hey the wife knew what she was getting into

RD, If you read the uniform inspection sheets found on scoutstuff.org, ALL Cub Scout leaders, irregardless of gender, and female scout and venturing leaders can wear 1 temp patch either in the jambo spot, or on the pocket. That further adds to the confusion And yes the WCA in the BSHB, so if a scout wants it, he has the info.
-
Yeah it's kinda bad when schedule such things as birthday parties, family vacations, and the night out for your anniversary around your Scouting calendar. Luckily the wife doesn't mind nme camping on her Bday, and she is willing to celebrate our anniversary after CSDC Hi my name is Eagle92, and I am a Scouting addict.

My advice FWIW. ( PChad look at some of the reasons for your hijack ) Talk to the troop first before buying any tnets. Reason for that include 1) Troop may have tents already and want scouts focusing on other gear. 2) Troop may focus on one type of camping, and one type of tent does not fit all. A) Backapacking needs a lightweight. B) Winter needs heavier type. etc. 3) Scouts in a hiking and campign troop will know what exactly you need and are the experts.

'Coast, While that is not how it' suppose to be done, regs say Cubs have to wear the appropriate colored necker, if national keeps showing cubs without neckers, I say go for it. Just wish Stradi wold make the proper sized neckers as theirs are too small.
-
I've seen both the battery pack, and I saw someone with a VERY long extension cord that went from the check in building, which was his office for most of the weekend, to his tent. I think I read somewhere on this site about someone having a car battery rig fro summer camp.
-
Neckers are a valid and, if the correct size, which BSA is going back to finally, are a useful uniform item that should be mandatory for all, including Venturers who choose the green and grey uniform. But that is my opinion. ANYWAY I can see how some units are viewing it as an "option" since Boy Scouts do have that option, and several photos from Supply catalogs have Cubs without neckers on.

But there is a Kayaking BSA award.

Like JoeBob, I too have heard some funky stuff from "renegade" LNTers, to the point of ridiculousness. And some of the stuff they recommend makes no sense whatsoever. And at least in my neck of the woods, they seem to be the ones doing the promoting of LNT and turning others off of LNT. I admit the Outdoor Code was not a big deal with my troop as the Oath and Law were, i.e. we used it for opening and closing the troop meetings like we did withthe Oath and Law. But we followed the principles. The only way you could have known we were at a campsite was if A) you saw us there, B) you didn't see any trash in the site, or C) we left a small pile of left over firewood neatly stacked by the firepit. Upon reflection, I think I am going to review the Outdoor Code next time I work on the CS LNT award.

At a meeting the other nite, the topic of CS advancement came up. Several folks said the CS requirements and electives need to be updated some, and revamped. What are your thoughts? What would you change?
-
BP, Has that changed recently? I remember being told that the IH can also be the COR and the CC. But upon reflection I don't remember if that was at PDL-1 or at one of my council staff conferences. If a council staff council, then maybe I was told wrong.
-
Nike, Across the pond, they call kayaks "canoes" and canoes "Canadian canoes." SOOOOOOOOO Kayaks are good to go under canoeing for me.
-
Again by the book a COR wears silver loops, no unit numbers, and votes on both the council and district committees. Besides if they were suppose to wear numbers, what color numbers would they wear red and whites or tan and greens if they had a Pack and Troop combo, Troop and Crew Combo, or all three (Not including Sea Scout Ships in the mix as they are no longer suppose to wear numbers). Also what if they were COR for multiple unit numbers? And yes COR can be multi-registered up to three positions: IH, COR, and CC, they would only wear numbers in conjunction with the CC patch. As mentioned what si suppose to happen and what does are tow different things. Heck I knew of 1 Charter organization that had 2, possibly three, CORs. The COR/CC for my troop became the Adviser of the crew, and the SM of the troop became the COR/CC of the crew. Don't know who the COR of the pack was, and yes that got through the council somehow. Me personally I'd be happy to have a COR involved.
-
As 'Fish stated, the COR can do the hiring and firing of unit leaders. BUT they also are members of the district committee, with full voting powers. Ditto teh council committee as they can got to council exec meetings and vote.
-
'Rat, No problem. I must admit most of the doo dads I am seeing are not uniform items, and I understand completely, i.e. mentor pins, parent pins, large furry necklaces from pack activity, etc. After updating my Sea Scout uniform, I'm thinking my other uniforms have too much stuff on them, and all of the patches are properly worn. I may not some of the stuff I have on my next new shirt, but I will keep my knots.
-
COR = Charter Organizational Rep. that's the person who sis suppose to represent the unit on the district and council level,i.e. is a voting member of both bodies, wears silver loops and no unit number if in uniform, etc. PLC = Patrol Leaders' Council. that is the group of youth leaders who run things in the troop. Some troops may add others besides the PLs and SPL, i.e. Troop QM, Historian, treasurer, etc. TC = Troop Committee CO = Charter Organization.

We have 40 boys and sold $22K in popcorn. HOLY QUACAMOLE!!!!!!!! $22K was what my entire district sold!
-
Desert, To a degree I must respectfully disagree with ya. Depending on your area, you could do with less, or in my case, you could need more. My district committee has consisted of folks wearing both unit leader and dis com hats. Kinda rough to start a program, say a district CS Family Campout, where all your District Cub Folks also serve as DLs, WDLS, and CMs. But as with anything in scouting, scouting varies by location. Now I do agree that they need to promote program, program, program.
