  1. I would not use a C11-3 engine 1/2A size mabye, but make sure that there is plenty of room for LAUNCHING!
  2. I'm curious, does any council's have an incentive for Boy Scouts and Venturers to sell popcorn? In my council, any Boy Scout or Venturer can sign up for a program where the full 66% or 67%, whichever it is, goes into a scout account at the council office for their use. However here are the conditions 1) They can only use the money for NSJ, WSJ, Philmont, FL Sea Base, Northern Tier, and Pamlico Sea Base. I think, but don't quote me on it, NYLT is also an option for use. 2) If you do not use the money in the account for said activities before ageing out, the money goes to council. We have lots of folks take advantage of this.
  3. One challenge is that you do get more product for your money with the popcorn IMHO. I do think the prices are a little high. But one thing I do like is the popcorn to the troops. I sold 3 of those outright, and when people made donations when we went door to door, when I asked if I could put it towards sending it to the troops, folks eyes lit up and said "YES ABSOLUTELY." An aside on Girl Scout Cookies and the BSA. BSA wanted to make their own brand of energy bars that could either be sold via the scout shops, or used as a fundraiser, don't remember which. GSUSA found out, and threatened the BSA with a lawsuit saying the energy bars were too simlar to their cookies. So BSA backed down. MAN WERE THOSE GOOD ENERGY BARS I GOT FOR FREE
  4. Public Health. We had a SM who was a health inspector for one of the military bases offer to teach that one. For their visit, the class inspected the dining hall and kitchen.
  5. Wish I could help, but this is my 1st S4F in the field. In the past I was in a support role, i.e. at the collection point, at a place where extra supplies could be picked up, etc. My advice would be to make sure you are not in another unit's area. In my neck of the woods, the city map is color-coded with individual units' areas.
  6. BP, My council must be bucking the trend. Then again we have a SE who is pro program, and pro camping. He pushed for a CS outdoor committee after years of neglect. He pushed for council to do CS family campouts on the council level and got them. He pushed for all 6 council camps to get work done, is encouraging units to help , and got the OA to move an Ordeal form the main camp, to the one that needed the most work. He also is pushing to OA to do a better job of camp promos, and raising money for camperships as some are now available to Cubs to go to day camp and resident camp. Now we got to keep him from leaving or retiring
  7. '732, I agree there are professions that don't pay as they should. I think I can safely add military to your list. But I'd also add being a DE. a friend calculated how much we got paid per hour, and it was in the $2-$3 per hour range. But other factors to play a part in scouting. Camps is #1. Office is another. Supplies, program, etc etc. And yes I came aboard to help others, not for the money. The hours are horrible, and the stress can be overwhelming. It puts a lot of stress on marriages. My wife of 2 months, who knew exactly what my job entailed prior to our marirage, gave me an ultimatum: her or the job. One of my coworkers was on wife #3, 2 of my co-workers got divorces, and 2 had "nervous breakdowns." Very high stress, at least under my SE and DFS.
  8. SP, The most emotional thingt for scouts and leaders is the selling of a council camp, even if it is for the best. I know folks were still upset that my council sold its camp that has a few hundred acres, for a camp that had over 1600 acres, 30 years after the fact! Council had to sell it b/c of encroaching surburbia (camp was surounded). Next most emotional thing is tree harvesting at a camp. sometimes it IS needed. Again camp growing up had an infestation, and forestry said cut this many trees or we will eventually lose all of them. Folks were not happy, but the council was honest, showed the infestation reports, and showed where the money was going from the harvesting: back into camp. So folks were OK with it. But one of our council camps does need some harvesting as we need to clear some areas for more parking and activities (kinda hard to pack 600+ Cubs and Family members in a camp desigend for boy scout troops and their trailers), as well as fire safety. I know if we get a lightening strike the are will probably go up.
  9. I know in my neck of the woods, summer camp price is now $235 up 'till May 15th, then $255 with the late fee. Pamlico Sea Base is a minumum of $295, can't go into details as the cost varies by program. But from expereince the cost of camp was based upon summer expenses. This year they did somethign a little different. In addition to the cost to run camp, they added a supply fee into the equation that veraged what scouts spend for various program supplies ( i.e. craft supplies, practice skeet shooting supplies, etc(this was based upon surveys from the SM if memory serves) so that one fee covers EVERYTHING needed to take classes. Seems real popular. Now jambo has lots of expenses. I'd hate to see the bill for that. As for WSJ, EMB stated, and in doign some research got it confirmed, that the WSJ fee is graduated so that those in 1st world nations pay more than those in 3rd world nations. Kinds like our progressive tax system.
  10. Both the cabin and training building have identical, or near idential exteriors. Both are relatively new, i.e. past 5 years.
  11. Here's a link to our info. And the pic at the top really doesn't do the view justice asthe pic emphasizes teh building, not the view overlooking the Pamlico River http://eccbsa.org/Camping/Property%20Rental.aspx
  12. Actually I like how my SM handled me teaching FA SA: he had the scout I taught demonstrate the skills.
  13. I agree 100% on that VeniVedi. FA skills are EXPECTED by the public in my expereince. I know I was a newly crossedover Scout who had to FA b/c the adults didn't know what to do, and expected me, a Scout to know what to do. Luckily it was covered by READYMAN, and the church was less than a mile from the hospital.
  14. Well we are lucky as the most expesnive cabin is $100 and it sleeps 10. And WOW what a view it has.
  15. My thoughts. 1) Why can't older scouts teach MB skills? Teaching is a requirement for some MBs, FA MB requires you to teach the T-2-1 skills (and in my day teach FA Skill Award). The summer camps I've been to used, as a youth, adult volunteer and staffer, used odler scouts to teach MB classes. Yes some staffers were not very good, but some were superb. I also know that in my troop older scouts did "teach" some MB skills as parts of meetings and outings. Canoeing MB skills come best to my mind. 2) In my troop teaching the younger scouts was an expectation as "I came, I saw (but did you conquer )" has stated. His view that teaching may be viewed as a requirement and thus doen once and done, is a very VALID point. You do have Eagle Mills out there. 3) EDGE as others have mentioned is the altest greatest way of doing the old Show, Tell, Do (or is Tell, Show, Do. Age is getting to me) that humans have been using since time immemorial. 4) I think a 2nd Class with enough experience and confidence could pull off teaching stuff that he knows. Again back when FA MB was required for 1st Class, 2nd Class scouts had to teach FA Skill Award as one of the requirements. 5) IMHO I would be more concerned WHAT DID THE STUDENT LEARN AND HOW COMFORTABLE HE IS DOIGN THE SKILL ( caps for emphasis) than the method of teaching. Every good teacher knows that each student has their own best ways of learning, and that sometimes the teacher has to adapt to the learner's best way of learning.
  16. What's this Social Security thing I keep hearing about?
  17. Clem, If WFA is more convient, and affordable (that is my problem as there is a severe shortage of WFA instructors and the charge is an arm and a leg, figurately speaking), then do take it. From my read of the books, WFA goes into alot more detail on stabilizing and using resources than the normal course.
  18. $500/day for a cabin?!?!?!?! Does it have room service and a valet? I can see why you're upset.
  19. Short, I think he was referring to me as I did mention WFA kit, and in rereading my post, it did sound confusing. Hence my clarification. I agree unless you are multi-registered, or running events in remote areas, Alaska and some Western states come to mind, I woldn't worry about WFA, or should I use the new ARC abbreviation WRFA.
  20. Dan Even if the troop does partake in a Crossover or graduation ceremony, doesn't mean they cannot take the necker and woggle backfor their own Investiture Ceremony My troop had an Investiture Ceremony where we formally admitted them to the troop, and gave them their troop necker, woggle, and troop totem. When everyone started giving out neckers at Crossovers, when we finally got a feeder pack, we place a necker and woggle on them, and then once we led them off, explainto them that they will be getting back when they formally join the troop that friday. No one had any problems. Me personally I prefer the Investiture Ceremony.
  21. Maybe I should clarify. 1) I am looking into expanding my FA kit since so that it can also be used at CSDC. 2) My CM's kit is paramedic grade, as he is on call 24/7. Thus it's kept in the trunk of his car at all times. 3) I would rather have too much stuff in my kit, than not enough. Although some things I saw, i.e. the suture stuff, I too think is going overboard. 4)in a life or death situation, I will do whatever it takes, and will use any and all knowldge to save the life. While standard FA courses do not cover epipens, one course I took DID cover it, and we were given a physician's standing order to use them if it meets criteria. grant you that was when I worked in a 'hoods in da woods" program and the epi pen was standard issue in the FA kits we kept at all times. Also this may or may not be legal, I'll leave that to the PTB if the situation arises, but I know someone who told several of us to use her, stressing HER, epi pen if something was to happen to her. She even got us epi pen trainers to practice giving her the shot. After 2 or 3 visits to the ED, she wants everyone around her to knwo what to do: give her the shot and get her to the ED!
  22. As an youth Arrowman, most packs do both ceremonies the same nite. So I have done an AOL ceremony with one set of Cubs, and a Crossover with either not as many as AOL recipients, or in one case, and additional Cub who had to join the pack for a few months until his 11th birthday. I have also seen a "stand in troop" for a troop that was not able to make it. And as an adult (I know, I know, only youth are suppose to do ceremonies, but there were 2 other ceremonies going on that nite and the ceremony team split in half to cover those) I did an AOL only ceremony for 1 youth. He had no interest in continuing on, and He just received AOL.
