  1. A blue book is going to probably be his best bet.
  2. Check ebay for it, bu texpect to pay apretty penny. may be under sea scout, may be under sea explorer. http://www.thedump.scoutscan.com/handbook.pdf http://www.thedump.scoutscan.com/seascouts.html
  3. LONG LIVE KNEE SOCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And yes I was shouting. I would not worry about the ASM patch. In fact the literature on the Centenial uniform from May 2008 to April 2010 stated that you can mix and match uniform items form the older ODL uniform form 1979 or therabouts, until Sept. 2009. And in fact they are still on clearance. So if you still got the red loops, you can wear them, as well as your red and white numbers.
  4. It's not just personal notes, but also research documentation, and public records. In archiving school, one of the biggest challenges discussed was keeping access to digital records. Sounds easy, but some formats are "loosey" formats that loose characters over time. Some documents may be done in one format, and not converted to another format in time, and the hardware is repalced or antiquated and not usable. That is what has happened to a lot of NASA research from various satelites and probes. The information is stored on one type of media, but the hardware to read it does not exist anymore expect in museums. One reason why NARA, DOD, and NASA were scheduled to spend billions on a super computer that could read older programs and make the information available AND be able to upgrade to newer technologies. Don't know if that is still in process. But one researcher I know, a military historian, stated it was easier to get access to WWII documents than it was to Desert Shield/Storm Documents b/c of the hardware and program compatabilities. WWII docs are on paper or microfilm. While a microfilm/fiche reader is nice, a strong light source and magnifying glass would allow you to read it. Did that with some old Boys Life Microfiche cards someone gave me.

Everything happens for a reason. It may be to the benefit of all that this family is goign elsewhere. However I would tactfully remind the parent to not disparage the home troop. And I would tell all the parents to visit all the troops they and their sons want to visit. I would also invite the SPLs and SMs to a meeting to talk up their units. I would also get you DCs to talk up their unit. Yu may be surprised at what they can do. I had an awesome DC, and I followed him into the troop, despite some reservations. I stayed 6 months, mostly b/c of him, before I realized that it wasn't the troop for me. Joined my cousins' troop instead.
  6. While I commend folks for using the inspection sheet, the INSIGNIA GUIDE is considered the 'uniform Bible" and all other documents are suppose to reflect that. So if national supply catalog show's Cub scout not wearing a necker, it is incorrect as the IG says they need to have a necker appropriate to their grade. Of if national produces a picture of Venturers wearing green Scout pants, we know it's wrong b/c the IG says so. Or if we want to inspect a Crew using the recommended uniform,we have to use the IG as their is no inspection sheet. The red vest is mentioned in the IG, is considered a uniform item, and can be worn. I aint touching sea scout uniform regs though as that is a can of worms.
  7. Kinda like when BSA had the NASCAR PWD kits and the Big Rig kits. Older tracks could not race them and people were upset.
  8. 'Box Wait until April 1st, at least in the AHA world. that is when we start doing the 2010 Science classes. Won't go into details, but I'll give some hints. Compressions, Airway, Breathing instead of ABC 100+ compressions per minute Infant AED use. I went through the online instructor update, and will be taking my update class Friday.
  9. Blanc, I'm just repeating what I was told. DE told me that since the scout was a paid lifeguard, he's not eligible as it is expected that in a water emergency he is to respond. It may be that he was paid to be a lifeguard? I must respectfully disagree with you in that Lifeguards are considered professional rescuers in some jurisdictions, if not all. I know that if there is a death, all their training will be called into account, and their instructors can be called into court to testify. They can also be charged with negligence if they do not follow their training. Heck my old boss, who certified me as a lifeguard instructor was called to court one time to testify about a lifeguard they trained. On another note, ARC and BSA requires CPR for the professional rescuer, or equivalent for certification and not the standard CPR with AED certification.
  10. back in the day, when you didn't get your rank until the COH, Scout was given as soon as it was earned, but it was part of our Investiture Ceremony. The troop formed an open horseshoe while the Scout and PL were at the entrance to the building. SPL and SM had a table with the Scout Law log and 12 candles, and the trefoil with 3 candles. PL had a candle, the "Spirit of Scouting" candle. The Scout and PL would go from the entrance of the building to about 1/2 to the troop where they would be stopped by either the SM or SPL (usually SM but occasionaly the SPL) who would ask "Who seeks admission to our troop" PL "A Scout" SM "Who will vouch for him?" PL " I will" SM "Then let him enter." PL and Scout would then go through the opening in the troop to the table with the SM and SPL. Troop closed the opening. SM "To formally join Troop____ you will be grasp the troop flag in your left hand, make the Scout Sign in your right hand, and repeat after your PL the Scout Oath and Law." PL grabs the troop flag, makes the scout sign, and says the Scout Oath and Law SLOWLY not only to allow the scout to say it, but also to allow the SPL to light the Scout Oath and Law Candles. SM: The Spirit of Scouting is like that candle that lead you into this room. It provided a limited amount of light, but darkness is still all around. But when you combine the Spirit of Scouting with the three points of the Scout Oath: Duty to God and Country, Duty to Others, and Duty to Self, with the 12 points of the Scout Law, it becomes a blaze that lights the entire room allowing all to see and be seen. Tonite you officially joined the Boy Scouts of America, and Troop _____. You will now receive your Scout Badge, troop neckerchief, woggle, and totem. The SM would then explain each item with the SPL and PL putting the items on.(This message has been edited by Eagle92)
  11. Check out some of the archives, as there are topics on getting chapters restarted, getting arrowmen involved, etc. Can't go into details, but this is what I did to revitalize a chapter. 1) Get more OA visibility. We wear sashes to just about every distict event. Campfire at district camporee, we want arrow men in sashes for that, especially since we use them as "props" for the call out ceremony (we have every arrowman come up and stand behind A.S. calling out the names. Some arrowmen go out and present the candidates to A.S.) We encouraged them wear it as COHs, esp once they get in as a means to recognize them as new arrowmen, and to motivate others. Some folks do not like what we did, but we it has worked. 2) get ceremony, dance, and singing teams organized and have them help promote the OA. 3) Work hard, BUT PLAY HARDER! At least in my neck of the woods, the OA is 99.99% work, and a little play. You need to have some balence.
  12. Sounds like my old DFS, but after getting promoted to SE, he went back to being a FD. What others have said is your best bet. Don't say anything else, get a lawyer and let them handle it. Good luck.
  13. I know that a healthcare workers, whether clinical or non-clinical, must do a certain amount of continuing education every year in order to keep their licenses current. You don't do the required amount of CE, your licesnse gets suspended. And while volunteers can have strengths and weaknesses in teaching FA and CPR classes, I know AHA has gone to a video format to standardize the courses even more. Seems like all the instuctors do is supervise the skills, check off the skills, grade the exams, and conduct remediation if needed.
  14. Since my troop kinda roasted me at my ECOH, I sometimes go that route, if appropriate. So if you got pics of them as cubs, I'd get them copies. All joking aside, a note of congratualtions is appropriate.
  15. He could be a Venturer though! Hope he continues playing the game, but this time by giving back to the scouts and helpign them along.
  16. Skipper (sorry aint using your initials ), No worries. Again I have mixed emotions on these types of events b/c I have seen a few outstanding ones, but I have also seen one, and heard a bunch of "pencil whipping," ones. Also seen some camps like that. I was fortunate in that I had some great MBCs at summer camp growing up. I admit I did have one pecil whipping MBC, but he was not a staffer, but one the troop used! Needless to say that after the first group saw him, he wasn't used again. I also had a few MBCs that used BP's approach: advancement should come as naturally as a tan to paraphrase him. In one older scout program I did, we covered 3 or four MBs in the backcountry without realizing it until after camp was over and the SM had a talk about what we did. We were workign hard, but having fun. One of the ASMs, who was our resident aquatics MBC sicne he was a QM and did it all, took a bunch of us motorboating one weekend, he worked our tails off, but we had a blast. Without realizing it, we were working on Motorboating MB.
  17. Schiff, I don't see a problem with fundraising and doing MBs IF everyone knows it is a fundraiser. Also you got to get some value from the event. When my OA chapter did the seminar we did wanted to do a few things besides lettign folks have hte opportunity to earn Indian Lore. 1) Raise money for chapter regalia as we were a new chapter. 2) Raise awareness of the OA and the fact we were a new chapter. 3) Get folks interested in Native American Dance and Singing. We charged $20 or $25 for the day, sorry don't remember the exact amount, and that included lunch, and 3 crafts. Trust me we tried to keep the cost low as possible, and didn't have a large profit after expenses. You're going to laff, but the seminar coinsided with a shooting competition at the location. Someone at the competition asked if we were selling plates, and we had enough left over make more money for the chapter selling leftover food, than we did at the seminar.
  18. SctDad, SctDad, SctDad, You forgot a few other things you do. OA associate adviser and council CS outdoor committee. Helping to rebuild a chapter is very tough work, and the outdoor committee is slowly taking off.
  19. Skipper, The reason why I wrote the letter is b/c our MBC lists have not been up to date, and there may not have any IL MBCs in the district. Plus I was goign by that scout summer camp urban legend that can finish up partials. Mea culpa. I will say that the letter contained my email so that if folks had questions they could contact me.(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  20. Wife of E2000, My bad. One of my former camp staff buddies was on here a few months back talking about possibly becoming a DE. Camp name is SWEATPEA, and I'm not saying how he got the name The camp is in MS, Sweatpea was from LA. SP, In retrospect I too was surprised she waited 2 months. She was got ticked off when the council made me cut the honeymoon short to attend a "mandatory" meeting at camp, which only 2 DEs attended (the two working camp), and when they sent me to work at camp the week after the wedding, and then didn't tell the CD or BD I would be there, so there was nothign for me to do except. Luckily I had two nite time meetings scheduled that week, so I ended up staying home 2 nites as I would not get back to camp before midnite.
  21. Not to be a downer as I think it is well earned, but you are right Calico, there was another person helping. Also I was told that if you are a "professional" making a rescue in your field, i.e. a certified lifeguard making a water rescue, then you cannot be nominated for the award because it is expected of you to make the rescue. Knew a scout who made a rescue, but council wouldn't put the p/w through because he was a lifeguard. The rescue was done outside of Scouting, and not at his job, but while on vacation at a beach.
  22. Actually the red vest is for ALL members; Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and leaders. Only folks who can't wear them are Sea Scouts, and that is in their rules.
  23. As a former pro, I can tell you that if you are invited to something, like a dinner or training conference, the council is serious about his prospects as a DE, and it may be narrowed down to him and another candidate. That was my expereince when I interviewed the first time as I also attended the annual business banquet. Very big deal. Unfortunately the other guy got it, and I ran into him at PDL-1. he had an advantage as he was local, having grown up in the program, going wasy for college and a tour with the army, and coming back. Great guy to be honest. Second interview was done during a planning conference, they made the offer the last day. If you and your daughter are also invited, you really need to attend. It is not uncommon with the limited expereince I have to have the wife attend as well. DE job is long hours, lots of time away from family, and can put stress on a marriage. They want you to know what you are getting into. TRUST ME. My wife, who met and dated me while I was a DE, didn't fully understand all that the job entailed, and gave me an ultimatum after 2 months of marriage: her or my job. Yes it can be that stressful Good luck to you and your husband, and tell your husband, who I believe is SWEETPEA from a certain camp in MS to keep us posted.
  24. Call a national shop and see if they can look around. Back in the day when I worked for supply, #1 they were "custom" orders, so they were not part of the regular supply inventory and had to be ordered and #2 Tigers were still not part of CS, so there was no TC badge, only the paw prints to be ironed on and teh TC Graduate patch. So there was no TC rank ever made. Again this was form when I worked supply, so things hopefully changed. Call your national store and see what they can do. if they do not have it, they will call around and get it for ya.
