If memory serves, I remember reading about the controversy that Huckleberry Finn caused when it was first published b/c it DID put blacks in a positive light.

Well I admit I got a 32/36. Even though I took the test 3 days earlier, I still missed 4 oh well. As Lisa states it is definitely a catch 22. there does need to be some measure of testing the student. But when that becomes the whole purpose of the course, there is a problem. In reference to perfect scores, we had a kid in my HS did just that. Honor student, the whole 9 yards. Funny thing was, he didn't get into his 1st choice of college b/c he was not really active in anything. Yes in NHS, but nothing else: no extracurriculars, no church groups, nothing.

I know at the HS I went to, English vocabulary and spelling was based upon the "2691 List" These were the 2,691 words that are in the test back for the SAT and ACT. Also once a week in JR year, we took one of the practice ACTs or SATs that the organizations give out to practice on. School kept in file, and we rotated through them. WELLLLLLL the week of the ACT, we had one of the practice ACT exams that the company gave out. After taking the ACT on Saturday, all of us thought that it was an old practice exam as we had just taken the exact same exam for the real thing.

Glad your chapter is involved. Mine is as much as possible, but we are getting multiple events scheduled on weekends. As please don' t get me wrong I think that it's great to be involved as a CS leader, and yes you do get to see the units in action. But it can be difficult getting to OA events. -
Yep same camping requirements. camping during training would count. (This message has been edited by Eagle92)

As an OA member who is a member of the 'blue terror" I have mixed emotions on getting adults active again. On one had I think it is great and I have gotten a few folks who are/were cubbers back in the Order. They are a great example to the young scouts and new leaders. On the other hand, it seems like every Cub event occurs when the OA is doing something. part of that is council planning, and I know we are working on it, part of it is packs have to plan event when convenient for the most people, and it usually the same weekend. Another drawback is the funny looks a guy with blue loops on gets at OA events. Some folks don't consider you a "true" scouter, even if your sash has bars on it or a triangle in the middle of it. At least in my neckof the woods. -
Wool coat made from a trade blanket. check out for pics. http://www.sew-it-seams.com/custom/customclothing.html They are nice and warm.

Biggest reason for the Crossover in Feb/march is to allow the new Scout to knwo his troop before goignto summer camp. helps ease parents fears, gets scout comfortable with troop, etc. Also it allows the parent time to pay summer camp fees. I didn't find out about summercamp until AFTER I joined my first troop in may, adn I couldn't come up with the money in a month.

Info, What edition are you using? Not doubting you in the least, and no disrespect is intended. I ask because at one time Tigers were NOT considered Cub Scouts and was a separate program from Cubs, although they met at pack meetings. TC who finished in may earned a TIGER CUB GRADUATE patch to be worn on the right pocket, and later the TIGER CUB Strip worn under the right pocket. It wasn't until the late 90s early 200os that tigers were fully incorporated into Cubs, i.e. earning the Bobcat badge, no longer having the TC motto, wearin ghte blue uniforms, etc. As for the TC t-shirt and sweat shirt, they WERE official uniform for TC and parents in the 1980s and 90s. As noted once uniform, always uniform. So I have no problem with a Tiger wearing a vintage uniform t-shirt. One of the challenges I've found with the BSA is that publications do not get proofed enough and errors occur. One only needs to look at some of last year's supply catalogs,as well as introduction of teh Centennial Uniform to see mistakes made.

I love my wife, she embroidered over the iron on letter for me. Not to change the subject, but... ...If national wanted to get the red outof the uniform, then why is the BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA still in red on the shirt and not green?

Old thread, but a goodie. Back in the day, Scout wasn't a rank, so you could get it in one nite. Since AOL does cover all the requirements for Scout, it was just given. If you look in the footnote for Tenderfoot in the 9th ed., it does state a SM "may waive the 2-month service requirement for the Tenderfoot rank for a new Scout who has earned the Arrow of Light as a Webelos Scout." pg 531. So maybe that is where the confusion comes from.

Yep I kinda freaked out when I was in the UK and one of my fellow 'service crew" members asked, 'do you want a fag," referring to a cigarette. Then I caused some problems when I was teaching some Girl Guides to shoot, using a reverse V sign to demonstrate what a rear sight looks like. I was later called into the warden's office and explained that the sign I made means "go forth and multiply." But the most funny was when I was asked to put on a Native American dance, and went shopping for some items I left behind. I went looking for a Vest, and was promptly shown to the bras in the lingerie section of the store. Told that story at the pub and everyone laughed.

I went last year, so I don't need to go for a while. Despite the cold weather where I was at, I was wearing a sweatshirt, red jacket, AND capote, It was very good and I learned a lot. Issues I had not known about were brought up, and ideas I had for improving my camp were reinforced. Despite having a CD who done it for 15 years, the camp was stagnant, had low participation ( we only had 45 last year, 39 or 40 the year before), and needed updating. Still fixing things, but overall much better.

Sometimes it's hard to step away from something, especially something you are passionate about. I know that was the case with the OA chapter I was adviser so. We did so much to build it up, that A) I was getting burnt out, and B) I didn't want to give it up in case the hard work going into rebuilding it went to waste if the chapter folded after I left. The key was finding a motivated adviser to take over, which took some time. But the one we now have is AWESOME. The other key for me at least was my other half. With a son finally going into Scouting, she reminded me that I need to focus my energy on his program, and not do what I wanted, OA. While I do miss the camaraderie of the OA, as well as going to Powwows and what not, I love getting involved with my son. I think the key to stepping back is the following A) It is interfering with your primary responsibilities, i.e. family and work. and B) It is no longer fun.

I bet Staples or Office Depot can help in punching extra holes. I still remember spending 1/2 a day at the local Staples punching holes and putting in the pages for my 2 five inch binders of thesis research. Just be thankful there are ships in your council. I found out Saturday that there are now NO ships in mine. Very sad.

Yep 15 days and nites, including 1 long term camp in the past 2 years. Adults and youth both have to fulfill this requirement. Some additional info. Leaders 18-20 in a troop are considered youth for OA purposes, so they can be on the ballot and VOTE. BUT to be on the ballot, they must have earned 1st Class. Also it's 1 adult nomination for every 50 registered youth in a unit. So if a unit has 62 scouts, they can have 2 adults nominated. CS leaders, Sea Scout Leaders, and Venturing Leaders are in eligible as only Troops and Teams perform elections. Disticts can nominate a committee member if they meet the requirements, and the council can nominate too. All pros are automatically edible for OA irregardless of the camping requirement b/c their duties do include being the chapter staff adviser. I know 1 SE who fired 2 new DEs, technically they were "Executive Trainees" as they had not gone to PDL-1 yet, for refusing to go through the Ordeal. 3 showed up for the Ordeal, and the 2 left during the Pre Ordeal Ceremony. -
I honestly do not know. I got out of serious patch collecting a whiles back, and the book I had was a gift. Now there are some websites that will have some, stress some, information. Those websites use the Blue Book info and update it as the collectors can. I know in one case, a council issued a special "international encampment" CSP that maybe had 200 made, but so few folks got them that it was not recorded anywhere. Mine ain't being traded or sold Also sometimes the "mistakes" are not recorded in those books. Again I had a patch that was a mistake and council returned it to the vendor to be destroyed. WELLL vendor starts using them as a sample patch, so a few of the mistakes are out there, but they are not listed in any of the books or websites. Again you can't have mine. Doing a quick GOOGLE search try these sites as they may help with images. It appears the 5th edition of the Blue Book is out of stock, meaning an update is probably ont eh way. http://www.scoutpatch.com/ http://www.scoutingbooks.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=S&Product_Code=096572395x

Why are current events discussed at an Eagle BOR?
Eagle92 replied to Knot Head's topic in Advancement Resources
Can't find my advancement guidebook, nor my current council's book for EBORs, yes they created a pamphlet which focuses the advancement guidelines to EBORs and gives a long list of recommended questions, but I do believe current events is a legitimate topic. I know I was asked some questions on current events at my EBOR, and want tho think that it is acceptable in the advancement guidelines today. If memory serves, it is viewed as part of being an active citizen by keeping informed. -
I think it was a standard script back in the day. My troop was formed in 1967, and had used the same Investiture Ceremony up to at least a year after I left. Do not know if they still do, but I hope so.

I know that in my current lodge, the person nominating suggests the Vigil name. We have some duesies too.!

The demise of a Handwritten note or report
Eagle92 replied to OwntheNight's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I am frequently finding research articles which refer to web-based documents. In some cases the citations refer to web sites that no longer exist or work properly. For all practical purposes, it is as if those documents never existed (and since they actually were just a bunch of 101101000111010's, I guess they never did). Yep I was a victim of that. I was doing research on psychological warfare, don't ask, and found a then current psy ops manual on a government website. Hit the gold mine with it, BUT didn't have enough money to print it it out on the school printer. took as many notes as I could in my allotted 30 minutes, and triple checked the URL so I could get back to it when I was able to get back on a computer. I waited about 10- 15 minutes, got on a computer went, straight to that website, and access was denied. -
Stupid question, but here it goes: What does the Insignia Guide have to do with requirements? Sounds more like the requirements book is going away.

best Christmas present ever was the 12 pairs of knee socks for the in-laws right as national was getting rid of them.
