  1. 'Fish is spot on. June 1 has been the official promotion date for record purposes since before I was a DE. And it it due to the multitude of ending dates for school. I remember when my school district ended school before Memorial Day. And I remember well it b/c the week of Memorial Day was when my district had CSDC. As you can imagine, not many folks attended. But now due to state mandates, the schools end in mid-June. So Summer camp and CSDCs adjusted accordingly.
  2. That's what the right pocket is for Temporary Insignia This reminds me of a similar situation at work righ after 9-11. I was working for supply, and the boss wanted me to wear a, IMHO tacky, beaded American flag pin the boss made on my uniform. Since the boss was management, the boss didn't wear the field uniform much at all, always the dress uniform. So a flag pin would have been appropriate. But the American flag is already worn on the field uniform, so I told the boss I felt it would be redundent if I wore the pin. Plus it would set a poor example for uniforming, which was one of the boss' points to emphasize. I didn't wear the flag pin. But I did wear a yellow ribbon on my right pocket. In fact it was one of the few times I was allowed to wear temp insignia on my national shop uniform.(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  3. Sherm, I must slightly disagree with you on the hat pin idea, I think you should wear your actual rank pin on your hat.
  4. I would offer to do the first PLC, talking to the SPL and SM about it before hand, and using it as an example. Remember KISS principle.
  5. ACTUALLy Knife and Tomahawl throwing are allowed. Under Shooting Sports on Page 30 of the current Guide to Safe Scouting found here scouts and Venturers can do the following. Archery and Knife and Tomahawk Throwing These are approved activities for Boy Scouts and Venturers following the Sweet 16 of BSA Safety. http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34416.pdf Hope it helps.
  6. AF, But they are listed on the charter and their participation is required.
  7. Thanks guys. I was hoping to clean them up a bit for Blue n Golds, COHs, etc. Looks like I'll still wear my dress shoes.
  8. HMMMMM. Link doesn't show the Cub Scout comics. Must requisition THE COMPLETE CALVIN AND HOBBES from my dad-in-law.
  9. A few ideas. 1) take the Wolf Den Leader Specific Training online. That will answer a bunch of your questiosn. 2) Get a copy of the Den and Pack Planner, or whatever it's called. It give yous a starting point for lesson plans for all 5 years of Cub Scouts. As for meetings and parents, every unit is different. Some units have all the den meetings meet in one location every week X day of the week is "Scout Nite" and the Y number of the month is the pack meeting. So you can have 3-4 den meetings / month and 1 pack meeting. Some packs have the dens meeting at folks' homes. Some parents think BSA stands for BabySiters of America, while some packs want them involved.
  10. Aren't TC partners registered? I know they are listed on the charter, so I would include it in over all tenure. So I would say you could wear it. Just my opinion.
  11. qwazse brings up a good point. As soon as you get a group of leaders going, they move on. And this can cause problems. Saw this happen with the OA chapter I worked with. The key is to get the older youth working with the younger youth, teaching them skills AND training them to take over when the time comes. Instill in the younger guys a sense of giving back to the troop. That's what happened with my troop, and they were going strong until Katrina. That messed things up some.
  12. Here are a few ideas based upon me moving to 5 councils in a 7 year period. 1) Make sure your son's records are all up to date with your local council and get a copy of them. Fix any problems that may be in them prior to move. 2) Make sure your current council has all your training records up to date, and get a print out. Again fix any problems prior to the move. 3)Make sure you have a copy of the BSA transfer paperwork, found here http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/28-401.pdf to be turned in to your new unit/council. may want to attach a copy of your training records, and your son's advancement records, just to make sure there are no SCOUTNET problems. 4) once you find out your new location, locate packs in BEASCOUT.ORG and arrange visits. Keep a copy of all your paperwork. Scoutnet is suppose to make this easier, but in moving around my records were FUBAR. I had to take YPT several times before it was expired because it did not follow me around, and a good bit of my training was not listed. And since I was a DE when a good bit of it was done, I never got cards b/c DEs didn't get cards in my council. Luckily a FD from my time was still employed, and probably verified my records when I got them all cleared up. Goo dluck with the move and thanks for your service.
  13. To bad the next election is next year. Although I know the SM wants you as a JASM, what the troop really needs is a SPL who knows what he is doing, and can get the troop back on track. Sometimes you need to adapt, improvise, and overcome challenges. And the current SPL is one.
  14. Wow what a long weekend, need to clarify. Adult was presented the MoM as a youth. He doesn't have the knot, and I want to get him one as a means of encouraging him to register.
  15. BP, Long weekend and need to clarify. hadulzo was asking "When was the big surge in sheath knife injuries that caused this paranoid streem of BS. " I went back and looked, and found that older material discourages, not, repeat NOT, forbid, banned, prohibited, ad nauseum, sheathed knives, just discouraged and/or not recommend. When I am not on council property, my council does have a ban in effect, except for OA events, on sheath knives, I will occasionally carry one. Won't carry it to CARY, NC though.
  16. What would you do with an adult the the Medal of Merit Award? I ask b/c we got one such dad, who is really stepping up to the plate. trying to get him as a MC or ADL
  17. I know that at least from the 1972 sheath knives were to be avoided according into the BSHB. When I looked in my 1960s book, Sheath knife was not mentioned at all, but a jackknife was. Even my 2nd ed BSFB says that sheath knives are good aroudn the kitchen and have more romantic appeal that usefulness.
  18. (edited to maintain the anonymity of the original poster as requested by them and perhaps due to the suggestion in this post - packsaddle) I agree with Moose as this should be a separate thread. Also you may want to change your moniker. Yes commentary on FB is public and everyone knows your name, but this site is also public. While we may not use names here, if you are here long enough, enough info will get out so that folks can tell who you are. One example was a friend of mine from Summer Camp Staff posting on here. Enough info was given so that I ID'ed him. Wound up getting back in touch with an old friend. (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
  19. I can tell you from a DE's point of view, the problems are unit problems that need to be solved by the unit, not the pros. Except if YP, and criminal charges are involved. Part of the rational is that #1 the Charter Organization OWNS the unit. By having the De jump in, the DE is violating the charter agreement in respect to the CO's duties and responsibilities. Even if the CO is only a paper "CO," council will not get involved. Another part of the rational is that DEs are not involved with the units like the committee, COR, and IH are or should be. DEs don't know all that is involved and the dynamics of the units.
  20. Clem, My understanding of why the AOL knot exists si b/c it is the top award for Cub Scouts. Just as Boy Scouts have Eagle, Sea Scouts have Quartermaster, Exploring had Ranger, Silver, Young American, Ace, et al (depending upon time frame and program specialty), and Venturing has Silver, why not have an AOL Knot?
  21. What is the best way to clean the new, rough out desert combat boots that are being issued today? What is the best cleaner. I've tried the regular Kiwi cleaner kit out of Walmart, but there are still a few stains I cannot get out. As most of you know, I love surplus and GI gear. The stuff is built to survive combat, so having scouts abuse the gear is no problem for the stuff Well my old Altama combat boots after about 15 years gave up the ghost back in late Nov/early Dec. Sole on one boot split, and it would cost almost as much as a new pair of boots to get it replaced, so I went with new boots. I got a pair of Belleville's Tactical Research brand Kyber boots, and I do love them. They feel like tennis shoes, break in period was almost nill, and I had only a very minor problems with them: boot laces are too short. Fixed that with 7.5 feet of 55o cord. Only bad thing about them is they are made in China. But I just got a catalog today showing that an almost identical boot will be coming out in the next few months that is made in the USA. Oh well. Thanks in advance.
  22. Moose asks some good questions, and the answers will affect how you go about the change. Kudu also gives some great advice, although he did forget the #1 piece IMHO (must be because of his other scouting project he's working on and forgot), and that is to get a copy of the 3rd edition SM handbook, both volumes. While some of the info will need to be modified for modern times, it provides a great foundation for patrol leader training, and the patrol method. You may need to take the PLC only on a few comping trips, especially if this is a relatively new troop and haven't been around for a long time or haven't been youth led. That way they can be properly trained in the PM. You're also going to need to instill in the older scouts a sense of duty to the younger ones. The 3 volumes of Troop Program Features are a start as they the PLC a set of premade lesson plans to work on skills at meetings, and then going on a trip to use those skills. I know KUDU isn't a fan boring meetings ( and neither am I), but if they focus on scout skills, both the new scouts learning them and the older scouts perfecting them AND teaching the younger guys, AS WELL AS an inter-patrol activity that builds the camaraderie and teamwork of the patrol, AND THEN GO CAMPING USING THE SKILLS AND PATROL METHOD. Change will occur. It may take time, but it will work. Good luck and WELCOME TO THE FORUMS, DON'T BE A LURKER!
  23. That perceptions exists. Some colleges do give points to Eagles in their admission and scholarship applications. There are Eagle scout scholarships through NESA and other orgs. And it has helped me get jobs, not only a s a pro, but elsewhere. Currently my boss and her boss cannot believe some of the things I learned and did in scouting. In fact my boss's boss called me into his office, asked me some questions about a cadndidate for a positions b/c it was heavy with BS stuff on the app as he worked summer camp from a CIT to Camp Commissioner, and wanted more details on the different scouting jobs listed. He got the job.
  24. Post a link and how much!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!
