  1. I just realized something. Sea Scouts buy a "Sea Scouts BSA" strip for their shirts. Venturing has "Venturing BSA" already on their uniform. Boy Scouts have "Boy Scouts of America" ironed on. So why do Cub Scouts have "Boy Scouts of America" instead of "Cub Scouts BSA" Cubs get shortchanged yet again . LOL
  2. Are they the gold WB beads lapel pin, or actual beads?
  3. fermi reminds me of a Scout's Own I once participated in that was conducted by the 105th Glasgow Scout Troop. In it there was a "skit" in which the UK was taken over and all Scouts and Guides were on wanted lists, kinda like OPERATION SEA LION and the Nazis. Anyway, in the "skit" one young man is on trial, and he is in a Scout uniform. He's nervous, scared, and doesn't want to be executed. During the scout's trial, testimony from an assortment or witnesses testify how he did not follow the Scout Oath and Law, how he was a selfish wanker only looking out for himself, and having no interest in helping others, and not being an active citizen in his community. During the testimony the scout constantly objects, only to be overruled by the judge. He tries to give testimony about how he was a scout, forgetting that scouts are getting imprisoned and executed, but is overruled. Eventurally the verdict is "Not Guilty of being a Scout," and while the young man lives, he is angry and upset with himself for the rest of his life, because he knows he did not live in a true scout-like manner.(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  4. Nope b/c you are paying for the event.
  5. From the G2SS found here http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/GSS/gss03.aspx Pack Overnighters These are pack-organized overnight events involving more than one family from a single pack, focused on age-appropriate Cub Scout activities and conducted at council-approved locations (councils use Pack Overnighter Site Approval Form, No. 13-508). If nonmembers (siblings) participate, the event must be structured accordingly to accommodate them. BSA health and safety and Youth Protection guidelines apply. In most cases, each youth member will be under the supervision of a parent or guardian. In all cases, each youth participant is responsible to a specific adult. At least one adult on a pack overnighter must have completed Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO, No. 34162) to properly understand the importance of program intent, Youth Protection guidelines, health and safety, site selection, age-appropriate activities, and sufficient adult participation. Permits for campouts shall be issued locally. Packs use Tour Plan, No. 680-014. Reference: Cub Scout Outdoor Program Guidelines, No. 510-631 So since Pack camping IS family camping, dropping off is not allowed. in reference to Webelos again the G2SS states ■A Webelos Scout may participate in overnight den camping when supervised by an adult. In most cases, the Webelos Scout will be under the supervision of his parent or guardian. It is essential that each Webelos Scout be under the supervision of a parent-approved adult. (emphasis mine) Joint Webelos den/troop campouts including the parents of the Webelos Scouts are encouraged to strengthen ties between the pack and troop. Den leaders, pack leaders, and parents are expected to accompany the boys on approved trips.
  6. I was going to say that I honestly feel sorry for you since you do not have any principles or noble goals, but someone else said it, and i can't believe I fell for it; TROLL.
  7. sometimes you have to violate theses ideas to get to your goals If you need to violate your own principles to reach your goals, either you have the wrong goals, or you have no principles.
  8. In the case I cited, it wasn't so much that he was an Eagle, but that he had experience doing work very similar to what he was hired for just out of college. Let's face it Scouting gives scouts expreinces and responsibilities that are not available in our current society. How many 13-20 yos can say that they were responible for planning, organinzing, and executing 24 meetings and 6 weekend long trips? How many 14-21 yos can say that they worked a summer job where they had to plan teaching sessions and teach skills to folks? How many 13-20yos can say they took a management class like NYLT or WB21C? Shall I continue? Things that we do in Scouting do have a part ot play in resumes. I know I didn't list everything I did in Scouting on mine, and my bosses are amazed at some of the things I did in the 14-20 to range, but I did use my scouting experiecne, both as a pro and a vol, on my resume to show that I did have the KSAs to do the job. That's what's important.
  9. Mr. B, At one time from 1989 to sometime recently, the "Varsity Letter" was called the "Varsity/Venture Letter" that Boy Scouts in a venture crew, now called a venture patrol, could wear either on the sash, or on a jacket. The high adventure pins were originally resitricted to venture crews, now called venture patrols, from 1989 to about 1995 or thereabouts, when both the varsity and high adventure pins were opened up to Varsity Scouts and Boy Scouts. At some point, no one can give me an exact answer, BSA discontinued the practive of allowing venture patrol members the opportunity of earning the letter and pins. Not really a big loss as few, if any troops knew about this. When I created a HA program at summer camp in 1995 based upon the letter and pins, I got all kind of weird looks about it. No one was really interested in getting the pins, and the only person the Scout shop sold any pins to was me as I bought them to promote the program.
  10. One thing that just struck me, if either of you guys have eyes then you should look at you troop. do the members really all live up to the scout law? With the example that their ASPL is, it is no wonder his troop members do not try and live up to the Scout Oath and Law.
  11. This thread was spun off from the OA private area in which a young man lied to get access to infomration on the OA. I commented the following: Yes a Scout is suppose to be Mentally Awake, but most Scouts expect a brother Scout to be TRUSTWORTHY, and not lie to them. By saying that you are an Arrowman when you are not, are you living up to that point of the Scout Law? A Scout is also suppose to be HELPFUL, and by not spreading information that is not meant for them, or the general public around. How is passing around information Helpful, especially since you may not know or fully understand what is going on? Again how are yo living up to that point of the Scout Law A Scout is suppose to be COURTEOUS, and respect the privacy of others and not go looking into things that do not concern them. Agin how is this Living up to the Scout Law? A Scout is KIND, and does not insult others or hurt others in any way? How is insulting OA ceremonies, which you truly do not know anything about, Kind? I don't think you have truly acted as a Scout. To which the young man, replied dudes, i think that the scout law is way to idealized. if either of you guys have eyes then you should look at you troop. do the members really all live up to the scout law? My first thought was that YES the Scout Oath and Law ARE ideals that every Scout and Scouter should do their best to strive to follow. Like all humans, we are fallible, making mistakes, and do not live up to all ideal of the Oath and Law. BUT we need to always keep them in mind, when we make mistakes learn from them, and do our best to avoid making them again. That's what Scouters should model for their Scouts, that's what youth leaders like a troop's SPls, ASPLs et al; a ship's boatswain, a pack's den chief, and a crew president and officers should stive to model and live by. The second thought was how can we as leaders help in instilling the Oath and Law, making it a viable part of our Scouts and Venturers' lives? The deception and attitude this young man has exhibited deeply saddens me, especially since he states he is his troop's ASPL (although he could be lying about that too) and is suppose to be setting an example for the younger Scouts in his troop. Your thoughts?
  12. In the thread this spun off of, WHAT WOULD YOU WANT OUT OF BALOO, WeLOT, AND IOLS? The caps are to emphasize my question, and I ask because while I will teach what the book tells me to, I do want to make it relevant so that folks are getting the info they need. I am particularly interested in what folks want out of BALOO since i teach that one at the moment.
  13. Well my SPL back in the day said I should always take 50' of shoreline with me, to "Be Prepared." He also said prop wash is good for cleaning tents at summer camp, and we need to have that too. Jet wash also works Ditto the left handed wrench and smoke shifters. Now when I worked in the trading post, one SPL sent his scouts to get fallopian tubes from me. I don't have any, so I sent him to our medic, but stated that I don't think she had any extra to give.
  14. Rev, #1 WELCOME TO THE FORUMS! #2 EMB is correct in that every camp in the USA I've been affiliated with or attended had 99.999% of the staff registered as part of the summer camp Venturing Crew ( or Exploring Post prior to 1998), including military folks on TDY and seminarians doing chaplain duties for the summer. Only time I ever saw otherwise was when national was experimenting with having scout shops run summer camp trading posts, and then the 2 of us were employees of national, not members of the crew. #3 Be advised that Venturing terminology is very important for some folks. Part of that is Venturing tends to be the redheaded step child at national, and even pros do not get it correct. And the changes National made seem to confirm how misunerstood Venturing is at national. Just as some folks get very defensive about Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, some are very protective of Venturing. And EMB is probably the #2 or #3 person in the nation with respect to knowledge on Venturing.
  15. Most of the packs I've seen had leaders move along with their sons. But I have encountered 2 pack where the leaders found a niche, and remained after their son went to Boy Scouts.
  16. Oak, Are you sure it was a CS shirt and not a late 60s-70s era blue blouse? Saw one of those in trying to buy the dress for wifey.
  17. We didn't have the junk food stop, he did the McDonald's stop. everyone knew if we running late lunch would be missed. Never had to skip lunch. But we had heard stories from the older scouts.
  18. YOU DA MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And yes i am shouting at ya!
  19. Ok I'm looking for a place to buy round, kerosene fueled lamps/lanterns and I have no idea what their official name is. Basically it is a sphere, with a flat bottom to prevent from rolling around. They have a wick and metal cover that goes over teh wick to put it out. I've used them with my lodge growing up and with the Eckerd Foundation. They were called railroad lanterns, rail road cherry lamps, and emergency lamps, but when i try to google them, nada. anyhelp would be appreciated
  20. Venturing green shouldn't be worn in Cub Scout positions, unless you are a den chief. My wife is in a similar psoition. She despises the tan and green uniform, and doesn't like the blue and gold uniform. I got her a vintage 1950s "Den Mother" uniform and she looks great in it. problem is getting a hold of all the pacthes. Luckily I am missing only a single, fully embroidered number now. Just remember, once uniform, always uniform.
  21. yep you can wear the Blue and yellow female uniform for any CS related position. Also on the Distict, council, and national level. What I thought was interesting was that when I worked for national supply, ladies had the choice of the blue and yellow uniform or the tan and green uniform in the main store. Guys had to wear the tan and green uniform. Venturing uniform was only allowed at camp by those working camp staff, and we had to pay out of pocket for it. Venturing green and gray looks good with gold loops
  22. PC, That's one of the challenges as national has not defined who get its, each unit does. And I know of units that give them to TC partners.
  23. Ok I bet dad thinks whis is still CS. I would diplomatically get dad on the side and show him a few scenes from FOLLOW ME BOYS to show that the purpose of scouting is not getting Eagle, but rather to let the scout learnt o take care of himself. Scenes I'd show include the lake scene in which the scouts are working on advacnement, and the two guys cooking burn their meal and do not get signed off for advancement. Shows that scouts do not always suceed, and that making mistakes IS a learnign method. Plus it's a funny scene and may catch him off guard. Next scene would be the scouts building their hut while Lem is on the honeymoon. The scouts took initiative, used their resources, spent a bunch of time and energy building it, only to have it collapse. Then gets involved offering ideas and giving direction, they are a new troop at this time and I think the highest rank is 2nd Class. Again it shows that scouting instills initiative and gives folks a chance to learn new things AND still have a safe environment to fail. Last I'd show is the one where Whitey is leading his patrol on a hike and someone falls, Whitey leads his patrol in the rescue. The ask the dad if by having his sone take shortcuts, did he think the son could honestly make a rescue liek that without any help?
  24. If the Family is full of Eagles, then Eagle dad needs to tell his son to step up to the plate. Eagle dad should know better. Also who signed off in the books? If the PL or SPL signed off, then I would have a discussion with them on how they are short changing the youth by signing off. Ditto another leader. IF Eagle dad is registered and signed off, and your troop doesn't have a policy of no parents signing off, again stressing YOUR TROOP as there is no national policy forbidding this, Scout Spirit is one way to nip it in the bud before the BOR. If even that is signed off, then I would do the conference advising the Tenderfoot on hiow he hasn't earned 2nd Class, and what he does need to do to earn it, and advise him that you do not recommend he goes to the BOR. You will still need to Sign off on SMC though. Advise the BOR privately on the matter if Tenderfoot persists. If he does go through the BOR, make sure the BOR explains why there are deficiencies, how to change that, and WRITE IT UP. Me personally i'd give a hand written copy that nite signed by the BOR, and print one up and email to all parties invovled ASAP. This does not sound like a good situation.
