Green Bar Bill Excluded from National Scouting Museum
Eagle92 replied to SPL576's topic in Scouting History
BP My money's on Kudu. Doesn't look like Mazzucca has truly been in the field since long before jambo. -
Whenever the PLC decides it's time for Class B's More tomorrow, gotta go camping now. Class A during the game, Class B afterwards.

Ok you asked for it From the late 80s to late 90s while I was a youth and ASM. 1)SPL plans, conducts, and organizes the PLC, usually on a quarterly basis, but as needed. 2)SPL and the PLC plan the yearly calendar. May not seem like a challenge, but working with an average of 14, yep 14, different public and private school calendars, it was a challenge 3) SPL runs the meeting A)Program patrol has the opening. B)SPL and/or Leadership Corps conducts the uniform inspection. C) LC members teach various skills to the patrols. D) SPL ran game time. Game time could vary depending upon how well the skills training went, behaviour, etc. E) PLs ran their patrol corners meeting. F) Program patrol closed the meeting. G) Service patrol cleaned up. In all honesty we didn't use the term Service and Program Patrols. We used Ceremony and Clean up, but you get the idea. Also the only time the SM stepped in was A) Scout Investiture and B)Recognizing Advancment, and C)SM Minute. 4) PLs ran their patrol meetings and activities. A) Wasn't held during the troop meeting originally, but eventually merged when we extended the troop meeting and patrol corners B) PLs organized duty roosters, menus, shopping details, etc. 5) Campouts A) planned and organized by the PLC. B) Unless in situations where we couldn't help it, usually camporees and some state parks, patrol camped a good distance away from each other. Can't promise you it was 300 feet, but far enough away to be on our own, but close enough to get togther for interpatrol activities and emergencies. C) older scouts worked with the younger scouts. D) Leadership Corps organized camp game, usually CIVIL WAR (yep the troop was divided into Yankees, Confederates, and Nazis (don't ask how that last group came about ) and campfires. E) Any emergencies that happened, Scouts dealt with it until adults came. Even then Scouts would normally have things under control ( hence why I no longer have an autographed Green Bar Bill troop necker ).

Chai, Don't forget that Webelos can now wear their plastic diamond too. I saw a lot of them wearing that silly thing on the right pocket b/c of no buttons.

Green Bar Bill Excluded from National Scouting Museum

Kudu, Like I said if it aint cheesy. I saw some awesome animatronics at some museums in the UK. I'm talking almost human in appearance an action. That's what i'm talking about. But the most common ones are cheesy: like Chuck E Cheese pizza cheesy. As for the fake quotes, sad to say it's already happening. Just look at the incorrect quote on outing is 2/3 of Scouting. He said 3/4, and anyone who knows basic math will tell you that 6/8 is simplified to 3/4. -

Well I just posted. The have a gallery of Scouting paintings, and an automated Seaton in the Scout Reservation Trail area. If it's not cheesy, why not at least an automated GBB in the ScoutCraft area? -
Moose, Every position is important and serves a role. What folks here are trying to say is that ultimately the IH DOES has all the power to hire, fire, or even dissolve the unit. I'll give you some examples. I had one IH who no longer wanted to be affiliated with the BSA and informed us that he would no longer charter the pack they had. Came out of nowhere, and we had folks scrambling to find a new home for the pack. As the DE, I tried to explain how things worked to alleviate his concerns. No dice, he didn't want to be associated with the BSA. The COR had no say in the matter, and the committee and leaders had no say in the matter. IH wanted the pack dropped, and it happened. Another pack had someone willing to step up and be CM. COR would not approve the person because he had no scouting background. COR believed that CM should have some scouting background prior to being CM.

A few things. #1 Green Bar Bill is the man who saved Scouting. PERIOD. NO IFS, ANDS, OR BUTS ABOUT IT! As such he deserves mention at the museum and in the MB. #2 I myself met him twice: 1989 Jambo and in 90 or 91 at a council event. I still get chills remembering how did the Scout Oath and Law as he opened the scout show. Also wish I still had my BSHB with his signature, and wish my troop necker with his signature wasn't ruined. At least I got some things. #3 has anyone though of doing a bio of him? I know he did and autobiographical article in Boys' Life in the late 80s, early 90s. Wish I had my original, but think I have it on the microfiche. Truly amazing man. -

The quote,"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" is really true. Folks are trying to forget Green Bar Bill and what he taught us, and things look like we are headed into the 1970s again. -
Actually yes there is in 2 situations. 1) LDS unit using the old 3 year program ( 3rd=Wolf, 4th= Bear, and 5th= Webelos) 2) 10.5 years of age and in 4th grade. Be active in your Webelos den for at least six months since completing the fourth grade (or for at least six months since becoming 10 years old), and earn the Webelos badge. http://usscouts.org/advance/cubscout/arrowoflight.asp

Stupid question, but here it goes. Since NYLT is no longer suppose to have any references to Boy Scouts, i.e. CD not SM, no longer referred to as a troop, etc, will national be changing the patch design since it contains the 3 bars of an SPL in the emblem?

BINGO WE HAVE A WINNER!!!! Although the newsletter didn't mention a new shirt as well.

Jeffrey, The requirements for the CSA do not state any position restrictions. From the record found here: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34169-54.pdf TENURE Complete 2 years as a registered adult leader in Cub Scouting in a pack. (emphasis mine)(Dates of service used to earn this award cannot be used to earn another key or award.) and here: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/CubScouts/resources/CSLeaderRecAwards.aspx

My pack gives them something outdoor related when Webelos finish their first year (we call it 'graduating to Webelos II," although that is not a true BSA term, it is the most common). In the past we gave out compasses. This year it was cook kits. I say give them anything that prepares them to.... PUTS THE OUTING IN SCOUTING!

No not the ones above. I just received a newsletter from my council advertising the "New Microfiber Switchbacks" Can't post a pic, but here is the text of the message Made of a durable, lightweight polyester microfiber fabric, this pant offers enhanced comfort, protection, and design features. Added Protection Improved Fit and Comfort Excellent Sun Protection-offers a UPF rating of 40+ to protect you from the sun's rays Superior Moisture Control- wicks perspiration away from body and toward surface of garment for quick evaporation, keeping you cool when it's hot, and dry when it's cold Aegis Microbe Shield antimicrobial technology-advanced protection against the growth of odor-causing bacteria Streamlined front pockets with drain holes Zip-off leg converts pant into shorts Unhemmed so you can customize the length Available in Youth, Men's and Ladies' sizes Youth Pant $39.99 Adult Pant $44.99 trying to describe it here. They are switchbacks but the cargo pockets are on the front, kinda like the last ODL pants, and it looks like the pocket is smaller. Still no zipper in the legs. I really think that if A) the 1st gen Switchbacks were properly sized or B) it was obviously stated what waist sized ( actual inches, not S,M ,L,XL) then the zippered Switchbacks would be very popular.

Lifeguard now required for Safety Afloat?!?
Eagle92 replied to moxieman's topic in Camping & High Adventure
BP, Thanks for the info. I've never heard of the American Lifeguarding Association or Global Lifeguards before but that doesn't mean anything. In reveiwing their syllabus, looks like the old YMCA course I use to teach. Glad they still teach multiple drownings, escapes and releases, etc. But the online stuff does concern me. edited: too bad they don't have any contact person info for NC, wouldn't mind getting more info.(This message has been edited by Eagle92) -
Looks like national is coming out with new Boy Scout pants. Looks like they moved the cargo pockets to the front again.
-
At one time, national did produce a Sea Scout uniform for sale. Now you buy it from surplus stores, USN directly with all the paperwork attached, and Ship's Stores
-
Moose, BP is 110% correct on this matter, only the IH and COR can remove a person, the committee and the unit leaders have no vote in the matter. Further if the COR removes someone, the IH can reinstate them. I don't know when your DEs went to PDL-1, but that is mentioned there. And yes pros do not get involved in unit matters except in extreme situations.

Fscouter, Not to play Devil's Advocate, I am a member of the Uniform Police ( you had to read my thread at myscouting.org entitled "...YOU MIGHT BE A UNIFORM POLICEMAN" ) but I have met folks who were over zealous, demeaning, and not scoutlike when correcting others in regards to uniforming. So I do understand why some folks do get upset as it is based upon their own expereinces. Like I said I've encountered the bad ones. Sometimes you can have fun with them . I remember when the Venturing shorts first came out a year after Venturing was created. In the council I was in at the time, folks were still wearing the green shorts and pants because they wanted the "official" version ( despite venturing nor requiring the "official version." Anyway I got a hold of the official version asn was wearing them, when one of the bad UPs came out. WELL let's just say he got real embarrased after screaming at me form across a field about not wearing the official green pants or shorts, and I infomred him that I was wearing hte new venturing shorts that just became available that week. He turned bright red in embarrassment. Again the key to informing folks on uniforms is be polite, courteous and diplomatic,.

Since CPR training is required for First Aid MB, Another reason to make it required for First Class like in the 80s.
-
I heard for the very first time one of the automated bugles DOD created at a Memorial Day Service. Very sad. I still get goose bumps remembering when my JROTC unit started doing, for lack of a better name, "Echo Taps:" one bugler basically center stage, another bugler 5 floors up on the roof at opposite end of the courtyard.

SP, I don't know how the uniform inspection became part of the judging for the district camporee, but it's been around so long that when you try to change it, everyone says "No." From what I was told, the uniform inspections tends to be the tie breaker, which is one reason why no one wants to get rid of it I bet. I admit there were some initial complaints from folks, but once things were explained to them, and I gave folks the opportunity to fix things before the inspection, there were no problems. heck I get more grief over that inspection on these forums than I did at the event. As for the reason why the IG was at the event, I was advised to bring a copy by camporee staff. Folks viewed me as trustworthy since I had no history with any unit or CO.I tried to be friendly in my approach to the scouts in informing them of the any uniforming problems, and tried to be helpful in providing the materials needed to fix the matter if they wanted to. Some folks did say they were not going to correct the problem, which was their prerogative. When confronted by leaders, I explained why things were incorrect, and if they asked to see where it was written, and most did, I courteously pointed out the passages in the IG. The key to talking about uniforming is to be friendly, courteous and helpful. I've encountered the stereotypical uniform policeman with the rude, unscoutlike approach,a nd yes it did leave a bitter taste in my mouth. But I met one guy who used the Scout like approach above, and you get better responses.

FScouter, If memory serves, once upon a time, Cub Scouts was only during the school year, not a full year like Boy Scouts. Hence the Summertime Pack Award and the pins tocreate a year round program. But many units are still in the 9 months mode.
-
Yep CPR has changed ALOT since last year. I've had to remediate a lot more folks on the written test than before the changes. And some folks do have some initial challenges converting to the new science when doing skills practices.
