So I was at the Scout Store today, which was undergoing major changes in item placement and shelving (which had me walking in circles trying to find what I needed).

Anyway while I was browsing I saw four empty slots in the merit badge shelves with "Coming Soon!" cards placed in them - Advanced Computing, Biometrics (a "major Fingerprinting update!"), CAD or Computer Aided Design (a "major Drafting update!"), and Multi-Media. I was also told there was a "Life Skills" badge in the works, but without a proper name yet.

Better get those Fingerprinting badges earned while it's still easy, lol.

Hearken world, and listen up! There is no such word as "Webelo." If your son is an older Cub Scout, he is NOT a "Webelo!"

The singular of Webelos Scout is ... WEBELOS SCOUT!  That's it! Please take the extra half second and get it right! Thank you for indulging my little pet peeve!

Did I mention my obnoxious OCD?  :D

If there are no MBC's for a merit badge is it still a merit badge?

Wasn't one or two of these new merit badges  going to be offered online?

According to this, http://blog.scouting...badge-calendar/, Advanced Computing, Multi-Media and Computer-Aided Design have been in the works for at least five years.  I actually thought they had been out for a few years, because I must have seen them on a list of "upcoming" merit badges and did not realize they had been removed from the list.  They are back on the list now, I guess.  I had never heard of the Biometrics merit badge before.

For me, they could combine

  • Golfing with Hiking
  • Family Life with Signs, Signals and Codes

According to that same calendar, CAD, Multimedia and Advanced Computing were all removed from the list.  CAD and Advanced Computing were removed in May of 2015, and Multi-media was removed in April of 2014.

I did not see anywhere where they had been added back.

In Bryan's blog post announcing Exploration MB in February, he mentions that it was the first new MB since Animation in May of 2015, and:

"It also could be the last new merit badge for a little while. The BSA’s Merit Badge Maintenance Task Force has shifted its focus to improving requirements for existing merit badges."

Well, I was assuming that Latin Scot's Scout Shop (say that five times fast) didn't put up those signs at random.  But I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I asked the manager of the shop about it and she told me both the badges and the books were on order, so I can only assume this is legitimate. However, she did not know when they would be coming in other than "within the next few months."

Also, the cards did not look like something the shop printed out on its own; they were very official-looking. Maybe next time I stop by there I will try to grab a few pictures.

Very interesting. The Bryan on Scouting blog has an update page where, nearly two years ago, they down graded "Advanced Computing from "coming soon" to not even being on the list of to-be published MBs. Make you wonder how old those signs were. According to that blog, Advanced Computing has been pushed back a few times, then removed. Same for CAD. Multi-media was removed from coming soon list a few years ago.

All that seems to have been updated as of 2/23/17. Now, of course, it would not be the first time BSA said one thing and did the complete opposite.

Well, the signs were put up only yesterday morning. I was at the shop Saturday, and they weren't there. Then when I went over yesterday they were moving everything around, and I noticed the signs while lost in the mess. I asked about them, and the manager said they had just put them up. So the status change on these must be recent, although certainly surprising.

I sense echoes of another recent discussion here.  The signs didn't by any chance say "Printed April 1" anywhere, did they?  :)

I know, let's ask someone at national for clarification. That will clear things up with a simple yes or no.

Note: Shot a note off to a few folks I knew on one of the drafting committees for the computer-based MBs. They were told the MBs (particularly Advanced Computing) were "dead". The reason given was lack of agreement on what constituted "advanced computing" and what it should include. No one I contacted has had anything further to do with the MB.

I would love to see a quantum computing MB.

Requirement #1, from the set of all words in all MB pamphlets ever written, consider all possible requirements for this badge simultaneously.

Requirement #2, using a weighting scheme suggested by your counselor, determine the optimal requirements for this badge.

The patch itself would look like all possible patches, until you stop looking at it.

The longer they take to develop the requirements the more technology will change.
