How to celebrate a Unit Anniversary

Recommended Posts

The best way, IMHO is to have the boys present that 40th charter to your CO at some public function. (Our CO is a church, so Scout Sunday is the date of choice.) A photo opportunity with members of the sponsoring organization and the boys would make for a human interest story in the local paper.

As always with Packs, keep it simple make it fun.

Do you have a roster from that first charter? Any of those make Eagle? Still in town or able to visit? Scouts would love to hear from those adults. A quick story about their favorite cub scout memory at the pack meeting (or if you have a number of guys, one could visit each den) the month you plan to present the charter would help to get more boys into the presentation.

My old Pack celebrated 75 years in 2015.  We had a special Pack Meeting and invited our Chartered Organization, past Cubmasters, and District and Council professionals.  The Scout Executive for our Council presented a certificate of recognition to the Pack.  As Cubmaster, I did a quick presentation on what living in 1940 was like, and on what was the same or different in Cub Scouting.

At 40 years, your Pack could have fun.  It must have been formed in the 1970's.  Check news archives for articles on the Pack, back then it wasn't uncommon for Packs to publish news releases for every Pack and Committee Meeting.  Maybe find some clothing that was common then, and have the Leaders dress up.  Find some Cub Scout handbooks from then and show the boys what was the same or different.  Find kid friendly games from back then... you could have a lot of fun with this.

Of course, you also need cake, so don't forget that!  And it might be fun to start a time capsule to be opened when the Pack turns 50 years old.

We are celebrating an anniversary this year too. I have seen a few cool things. Troop 1 from Sacramento did a very well done historical review video. This took a lot of time you can tell, but what a great thing to have done.

In looking around the Internet I have seen units do awards dinners, celebratory camp outs, extravagant COHs, pot lucks and other such events. Our PLC has decided on a BBQ competition where the former parents and Scouters have booths and smoke up some stuff for the attendees to try.

We have some of our guys searching Scouting Magazine, Boys Life and other places online to see what other units are doing. Good luck!

What @@Tampa Turtle said!

In 1911 my group turned 100 and we tracked down and invited as many alumni as we could. Ended up with a couple of adult volunteers out of it as well :) For some that were a bit elderly to come we arranged for cubs and scouts to visit them in their own homes and exchange a few adventure stories. We also did a special edition group t-shirt and hoodie, I still wear mine.
