Grand Canyon Council seeks liquor license for fundraiser

Recommended Posts

First that I have heard of a Boy Scout Council directly applying for a liquor license for a fundraiser.I was more surprised by the statement that 100 per cent of the proceeds will go to the Grand Canyon Council. Better percentage than popcorn!  :)

"On Monday, Oct. 3, The Mesa City Council (AZ) will consider a new liquor license for the Grand Canyon Council Boy Scouts of America for an 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, charitable event at 2100 W. Rio Salado Parkway.

Beer and wine will be served. The charity event is held in conjunction with the Taste of Arizona Festival. Food will be available for purchase at participating event vendors. A minimum of three off-duty officers and three private security personnel will provide roaming security and liquor control within a fenced event area. Identification will be checked by security personnel at the event entrance and wristbands will be issued to identify those patrons of legal drinking age. A total of 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Grand Canyon Council, Boy Scouts of America.

The (city) council is slated to make a recommendation to the Arizona Department of Liquor License and Control."

It sounds like a lot of fun.

I read the alcohol prohibition rules as being primarily about events that are centered on youth participation, like camporees, scout camps, etc., so I don't see any problem here.  Seems like a set up similar to what our Church and many churches do for festivals.

Here's the description:

I have seen some of these alcohol permits pass by my desk, similar 'grown up'  fundraising events for Council; not any youth around.

A fellow scouter was working one as part of his job and said it was full of 'professionals' that he had never seen before at any District or Council events or the service center. This fellow has been at for 10 years as a cub scout/boy scout leader. Was sure he'd run into someone he knew.

I think we are going to see more of this, with BSA councils looking for more ways to raise funds independently of the scouts and scout units.

The purpose of BSA councils is to pay their own salaries.  If they can't do this with the voluntary support of scouts and scout units, they will look elsewhere.

Agreed on the first point, your second point is ridiculous.

I'm getting the meat sweats just reading that list. And it does look like fun.

We had these types of events when I was a DE. No youth around, and mostly your corporate types who are the BIG donors. I only saw 1 scouter involved with a unit in attendance. He and his twin brother were two of my district big donors, and he was a CM with his son's pack. Event still occurs, but the price is too much for most unit serving adults.
