So what do you do when SM says a BOR isn't needed for Palm?

The date awarded for advancement in ranks and palms is considered as the date of the board of review.

 

The next eagle palm has to be three months since the awarded date for the last eagle palm not just 3 months of service at some time after earning eagle. And scoutnet won't let you enter if it's 90 days but not 3 actual calendar months.

 

We don't care so much about the eagle palm application being done or not done, but the BOR has to sign some kind of advancement form/internet advancement paperwork and date it.  I don't believe it is adding to the requirements to ask for the Eagle Palm application since many of the awards (and palms are just an award, not a rank) in scouting have separate application forms

 

The BOR chose to date his scout book and the advancement form as 3/28.

 

So as advancement chair, I don't get to change the date to some other date because it suits.  And neither does the Scoutmaster or Committee Chair.  Or even council cause there is no appeal for Eagle Palms.

Well....   I'm trying to think of how this whole thing is going to negatively impact his life, should he miss out on the coveted ninth/tenth palm.   Nothing comes to mind.

What's this Palm application you refer to. We don't use such a thing, nor have I heard of it. Is that a local thing or am I missing out on processing more paperwork? ;)

First and foremost, discern if this is the boy's goal. If so, go to the mat for him.

 

I'd call National and have scout net change their business logic. Because sure-shooting there's some troop out there that takes quite literally "3 months" and will back date or fore date their BoR because the tenure requirement says nothing about "plus however long it takes your troop to organize its adults." They'll figure that putting around waiting for a BoR to happen should be tantamount to adding to the requirements.

 

Now if it's all mamas' smoke blowing, by all means relax and tilt at other windmills.

In 12 yrs maybe 20% of Eagles get Palms.  Half one, half two, none more than 3.  Just reviewed the list; pretty much the cream of the crop but NO parents pushing.  Funny thing is I recall a few parents pushing for Eagle earlier just so kid could get palms and that pushing ended up being counter productive so it took the kids longer to get Eagle and none got palms.  

We assign a project for each Scout looking for a palm.  Nothing major:  mentoring Sr Patrol, writing up a job description for a couple positions, or mentoring Troop Guides with new Scouts for a couple months.  It works well.  

Last 2 Palm BORs we had we actually had the Scouts come in wearing a suit and tie with resumes for practice job/college interviews. Half the BOR was the mock interview and half was more BSA BOR.  We even held the BORs at a local business instead of a normal Troop venue.  Went well and the Scouts learned a lot.  (Pls spare me any comments on BSA BORs w/o BSA uniforms; the suit and tie and resume review format was far more beneficial to these young men.)

I don't disagree with any of this regarding the lofty bling goals.

It does seem rather silly to me.... but what it seems like to me just does not matter

so I was thinking along the lines of qwazse as I was catching up on this discussion....

IMO, Krampus and others are correct in trying to mentor the scout towards giving back, forgetting the bling as the primary goal, etc....

basically getting the young man's head screwed on straight.... but hey, if he also wants to be an over acheiver don't be so hard on the guy.  nothing wrong with that... imo

As the Unit Commish, I get to sit in on many  Troop Committee  Eagle Project  reviews.   Often, not always, the parent is there, too.  Sometimes, not often, the Eagle candidate has a Troop Scouter as a parent.   I have always counseled the committee to ALWAYS address their questions and comments to the Scout.  If the parent says something, we ask the Scout about it.  Occasionally, I have been moved to ask the Scout, with the parent right there almost next to me, "Pete, will you be able to tell your dad to bug off when he begins to tell you how things should be done?  This is, after all, YOUR project."  Usually, but not always,  everybody smiles in recognition.  But sometimes, they don't..... 

 

SM, MBCs, need to gently remind mom that it is "Boy Scouts of America",  not "Parents of Boy Scouts of America."
