Scout or adult fill open slot for Philmont trek

For the following should a scout go or an adult?

 

Parameters: Philmont allows 2 - 4 adults and the remaining as scouts (age limits apply) but rank is NOT an issue.

 

For fear that too many scouts would apply our tour leader established a rqmnt that scouts needed to be first class or above by a certain date. Originally we were going to have 4 adults. Then a scout did not make the first class rqmnt by the date and subsequently his dad said that he, as one of the original adults plugged in to go, would not now go. Therefore we had an open spot originally slated for an adult. Rec'd buy-in from scoutmaster to go with scouts on waiting list first then adults. Third boy on list accepted. Problem--- tour leader did not check to see if boy was first class. He wasn't first class. Boy was told he could go by tour leader. After it was discovered, boy mapped out a plan to get to first class before going to Philmont. The dad for the original boy that didn't meet rqmnt has now said his boy is not ready. There is an adult that declared long ago that if an opening came up he would like to join his son (son already going) and go on this trek.

These are not unusual problems. If my recollection is correct, First Class rank is a Philmont requirement. Philmont also places a limit on the number of adults who can be on a crew, although this limit has varied over the years.

 

If you have not exceeded the adult limit and still have slots for boys, there is nothing wrong with opening up the slot or slots to boys from other units in your community. I would discuss this with the boys in the crew before I did this.

 

You can also simply take a crew that is less than twelve people. I don't know how this may affect your transportation arrangements and pricing. Last summer I went with a council contingent of four crews. Two of these crews did not include the full twelve people. Our crew had only eleven. I don't think Philmont will charge you for twelve people if you are short one or two people. You need to talk to Philmont about this, but I think they charge a flat fee per participant regardless of the number of people in the crew.

I'm not really following this. See if I've got it. Boy A was forced to drop out because he didn't meet the 1st Class requirement by the proscribed date. His dad also dropped out since his son couldn't go. Boy B signed on, but it was later found he didn't meet the requirements either, but has a plan to meet the requirement before leaving, but beyond the cutoff date given Boy A. Boy A now says he too can meet the requirement if given the same time extension Boy B has. Right?

 

If I'm working the math right, their should be an empty slot on the 12-man crew formerly occupied by Boy A's dad. I would certainly offer that slot to Boy A.

 

Boy A's dad is getting the shaft, but that's the lesser evil of dropping one of the Scouts.
