We're trying to serve a non-english speaking population at our school, and we're looking for tips, materials and books in spanish for scouting. Any help.

You're doing a great thing and your district and council should surely be standing with you in your efforts. Contact your District Executive and/or your Council office and tell them of your needs. If they don't have the right books, etc. in stock, they should be able to get them.

 

Let us know in this forum of your findings. The Hispanic population is growing across the country and the publications you find may help others, too.

So far they have not been so helpful, though they do recognize the need. I've found some stuff on macscouter and a place to call for more materials.

A recent issue of Scouting Magazine had an extensive article about scouting and the hispanic community. BSA even has a catch phrae for it, "Scouting, Vale la Pena" which they interpret to mean "Scouting, It's worth it" YOur council should be able to get the materials from national, it was a pilot program in Texas, if I recall right, that they now intend to take nationwide.

September 2001 issue of Scouting has the article.

 

In the article, Frank Ramirez, associate director of BSA's Scoutreach division, states that Scouting has published close to 100 brochures, training manuals, videos etc in Spanish. Among them is a video titled "Que es Scouting? (BSA no. 94-124, a poster and flier "Scouting, Vale la Pena!" Nos. 94-110 and 94-104, and a resource for Hispanic parents "Requisitos de los Cub Scouts para el Ano 2000" No. 94-195.
