Win,
Our district recently did an Aviation Merit Badge Camporee, where with
the cooperation of 6-8 private pilots, the local airfield and airbase
(ANG) and lots of volunteers about 210 scouts received the required
training to earn the Aviation Merit Badge, under the Young Eagle
Program. Nothing was watered down or ommitted. If the scout's parents
declined to sign a permission slip for the orientation flight, no small
task in and of itself, the boy was advised of the alternates to this
requirements, and given the necessary paperwork indicating partial
completion of the badge requirements. More specific details can be
gotten from NHAVIATOR@AOL.COM, the mover and shaker for the camporee.
We also had frequent flybys by a Pitts biplane, and a C-47/DC-3 in WW
II colors. Although there were many modern aircraft being used, we had
a few L-4 and L-5 WW II liason planes and some of the scouts even got to
take their ride in a Stearman biplane!
