I didn't mean this to be a trick question.....really. There, in fact,
was an "Original Manufacturer of Boy Scout *soles*"; the question was
not about the shoes, just soles. My reference is an ad for the Gro-Cord
Rubber Co., Lima, Ohio in the November, 1959 printing of the 6th edition
of the Boy Scout Handbook.
The first correct answer was from W.M. who said:
"My copy of the"Handbook for Boys", Fifth Edition-Eleventh Printing,
October
1957 (price $0.65) has an ad on page 553 for the GRO-CORD Rubber Co.,
Lima, Ohio.
"Original Manufacturers of Official Boy Scout Soles"."
The second correct answer was received ~7 hours later but sufficiently
different to warrant a tie. (Sorry, decision of the judges is final 8-))
In the messafe, D.O. said:
"My 1939 copy of the "Handbook for Boys" has an ad for the Lima Cord
Sole and Heel Company of Lima, Ohio who, at that, time manufactured
Gro-Cord and Raw-Cord soles and heels. The ad states that Gro-Cord and
Raw-Cord soles and heels were adopted for regulation Scout Shoes more
than ten years prior to that date."
Thanks to all who researched their handbooks and Uniform Inspection
Sheets regarding the question of proper uniform footwear. C'mon, admit
it, some of you actually enjoyed looking that stuff up. The concensus
seems to be that there is no "official" BSA footwear or at least, there
hasn't been since the early 60's. But that could start a whole 'nuther
trivia thread.
I think that "shoes, neat and clean" is about as far as any requirement
ought to go since just getting to stand before your Eagle BOR is
difficult enough. But that's my opinion. I could be wrong. You may have
adifferent opinion. Someone could still come up with an official BSA
reference that negates my opinion. After all, this is still the
Internet.
