Actually, it is both. There are several versions of the award. There is a unit
level award, the badge for individuals, the bronze medal for individuals, the
silver medal for individuals, and the gold medal for individuals (by nomination
only, for long term service to conservation). The requirements vary according
to the level of the award.
By the way, forget the requirements in the Requirements Book. They are out of
date and were out of date when the last couple versions of the Requirements
Book were printed. (I suspect it is because the Hornaday Award is under the
auspices of the Conservation Committee rather than the Advancement Committee.
Make sure that the application you have is the latest version. (I think the
last revision was around 1994 but could be off a year of so.) I have a copy at
home but do not have one with me here at work. I'll try to remember to bring
one with me tomorrow and would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
My son went through the process and received the Silver Medal and I'd be glad
to share whatever information I can.
